INTRODUCTION: Surgery of the semicircular canals is seeing a revival as recently we have witnessed the development of specialized surgeries for each canal.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this work is through a review of the literature to describe these different surgeries while stressing on certain surgical aspects, their respective indications, results and their risks.
DISCUSSION: 1: The surgery of the posterior canal relates to the benign paroxysmal positional vertigo resistant to the medical treatments. The results are very good but the indications have become rarer since the introduction of the

OBJECTIVE: To describe the underrecognized inner ear malformation characterized by complete aplasia of the labyrinthine semicircular canals associated with a relatively well-formed cochlea, to investigate its relationship with known syndromic forms of hearing loss, and to hypothesize regarding the potential embryopathogenesis of this anomaly.
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective case review consisting of cases of sensorineural hearing loss with radiographic evidence demonstrating agenesis of the semicircular canals associated with a cochlea that was either morphologically normal or sufficiently well

We report a case of endolymphatic sac tumor (ELST). A 48-year-old female had recurrent and slowly progressive hearing loss, accompanied with dizziness like Meniere's disease. A tumor was located around the semicircular canals, and was detected on CT and MRI. The patient underwent total removal of the tumor using a transmastoid approach. Histopathological examinations agreed with features of an ELST. The tumor was highly suspected to have originated from the rugose portion of the endolymphatic sac or the endolymphatic duct, based on surgical and imaging studies. Structure of the membranous laby

We studied the human vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) in response to head 'impulses': brief, unpredictable, passive, high-acceleration (up to 4000 degrees/s2), low-amplitude (20-30 degrees) head rotations. We delivered the head impulses approximately in the plane of the semicircular canal (SCC) being tested. To test the anterior and posterior SCCs, the head impulses were delivered in a diagonal plane, midway between the frontal (roll) and sagittal (pitch) planes. We recorded head and eye position in three dimensions with scleral search coils in nine normal subjects, seven patients following unila

This review discusses present-day concepts concerning the structure and function of semicircular canals of the vestibular apparatus. It is indicated that the data available today about the function of semicircular canals suggest that they should be considered as a system with distributed parameters and that particular attention should be given not only to canal-canal interaction but also to canal-otolith interaction. A special section is allowed for the discussion of an agreement between mathematical description of the behavior of semicircular canals and experimental data. This work is of theo

Semicircular canal occlusion(SCO) is a surgical technique widely used for treating vertigo symptoms. It is primarily aimed at treating benign paroxysmal positional vertigo(BPPV), Ménière's disease(MD), labyrinthine fistula, and superior semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome, among others. This review aims to comprehensively summarize the development, evolution, relevant basic research, and clinical applications of semicircular canal occlusion, especially the application of endoscopic technology in recent years, and explore its practical value in the field of surgical treatment for vertigo.

Space motion sickness (SMS), a condition caused by an intravestibular conflict, remains an important obstacle that astronauts encounter during the first days in space. Promethazine is currently the standard treatment of SMS, but scopolamine is used by some astronauts to prevent SMS. However, the oral and transdermal routes of administration of scopolamine are known to have substantial drawbacks. Intranasal administration of scopolamine ensures a fast absorption and rapid onset of therapeutic effect, which might prove to be suitable for use during spaceflights. The aim of this study was to eval

Semicircular canal dehiscence (SCD) is a rare but clinically significant cause of vertigo and auditory symptoms. The clinical presentation is relatively specific and typically includes sound- or pressure-induced rotational vertigo accompanied by nystagmus, autophony, hypersensitivity to bone-conducted sound (hyperacusis), and pseudo-conductive hearing loss. Imaging plays a central role in establishing an accurate diagnosis and in excluding differential diagnoses. High-resolution thin-slice computed tomography (CT), particularly when combined with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), forms the cor

Semicircular canal dehiscence (SCD) is a condition of the inner ear wherein the temporal bone adjacent to the vestibular apparatus thins or erodes completely. It has no clear epidemiological predisposing factors that have been identified to date. Its diagnosis is made difficult by a clinical presentation that often overlaps with other pathologies of the ear. Symptoms of SCD are believed to result from a "third-window" phenomenon, which disrupts the transmission of acoustic energy in the inner ear. Symptoms, when present, may change or worsen over time, confounding the diagnosis. We present a c

The authors report 12 cases of bilateral cupulolithiasis found in 142 subjects diagnosed as having benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. A case history was taken for these patients (4 males, 8 females; average age 28 years) and 10 reported a previous cranial trauma while the remainder did not refer any previous condition of note. All patients had normal cochleovestibular test results and showed no signs of concomitant internal and/or central pathologies. The Hallpike maneuver was able to evoke an intense symmetrical paroxysmal vertigo and this was often accompanied by neurovegetative phenomena

UNLABELLED: Pusher syndrome is an interesting disorder of balance in patients with encephalic lesions characterized by the peculiar behavior of actively pushing away from the non-hemiparetic side and resisting against passive correction, with a tendency to fall toward the paralyzed side. The role of vestibular system on the pushing behavior is not clear.
AIM: To evaluate horizontal semicircular canal function in patients with Pusher syndrome, using caloric and rotation tests.
STUDY DESIGN: Observational prospective.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: We evaluated 9 inpatients with stroke and Pusher syndr

Evaluation of postoperative hearing acuity and equilibrium was performed in eight patients with labyrinthine fistula caused by cholesteatoma, in which at least one of the semicircular canals (five cases, lateral; one case, superior; one case, posterior; and one case, both lateral and superior) was interrupted during eradication of the matrix and granulations from the semicircular canals. The interrupted semicircular canals were obliterated firmly with autologous materials such as fascia, perichondrium, bone chips, and cartilage. The observation period ranged from 9 months to 3.3 years. Postope

Surgical treatment of vertigo is performed with in-depth study of inner ear diseases. Achieving an effective control of vertigo symptoms while reducing damage to hearing and reducing surgical complications is the principle followed by scholars studying surgical modalities. Semicircular canal occlusion is aimed at treatment of partial peripheral vertigo disease and has attracted the attention of scholars because of the above advantages. This article provides a review of the origins of semicircular canal occlusion, related basic research, clinical applications, and the effects of surgery on vest

INTRODUCTION: Bilateral semicircular canal aplasia is extremely rare; discovery, when the cochlear-vestibular system is normal and there is no hearing loss, is serendipitous.
CASE REPORT: Bilateral semicircular canal aplasia was serendipitously discovered in a 24-year-old male during assessment of unilateral mixed hearing loss with subnormal contralateral hearing. The deformity was isolated, with no associated syndrome.
DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION: Incidence of this isolated entity is unknown, but doubtless greatly underestimated due to the absence of associated symptomatology. To the best of our
