Community built environment factors and mobility around senior wellness centers: the concept of "safe senior zones".

The authors investigated built environment (BE) factors in urban neighborhoods in DeKalb County, Georgia. Each volunteering, consenting senior was placed into one of two groups: walking tours outside, then discussions (n=37); and focus group discussions indoors about photographs of BE conditions potentially influencing mobility (n=43). The authors sought to identify BE factors-both real and perceived by participating seniors-related to their ability to walk around senior wellness centers in a healthy and safe manner. The authors focused specifically on available literature and pilot study data

Periodontal status of older Floridians attending senior activity centers.

Older adults attending senior activity centers in Florida cooperated for a questionnaire and an oral examination. The 671 ambulatory dentate seniors in this report had a mean of 17.0 teeth. The mean attachment loss was 3.5 mm from the cementoenamel junction (CEJ), and the mean pocket depth was 2.1 mm. 24% of the sample had at least 1 site with attachment loss of 7 or more mm; the majority of these persons had only 1 or 2 severely-involved sites. The extent and severity index of attachment loss (2 mm or more threshold) was (88%, 3.7 mm). Use of pocket depths alone would have substantially under

[Social motives in visitors of a senior center].

This study dealt with senior citizens' motivation to participate in educational activities offered by non-institutional services for the aged. For this purpose 90 visitors of a senior citizens centre in Hamburg participating in several hobby and learning groups were interviewed in detail. As to the results, subjects primarily came to the centre because they were interested in special programmes. Also social motives turned out to be relevant for two-thirds of the sample as maximum value. Among those with social interests there were significantly more subjects living alone or living in unfavoura

Senior Centers and LGBTQ Participants: Engaging older adults virtually in a pandemic.

Upon the outbreak of Covid-19, recommendations to cease all non-essential in person services were mandated across the United States to prevent transmission to non-infected individuals. As a result, approximately 96% of all senior centers in the United States were closed to in-person programming. Senior centers have had a long history of engaging older adults, maintaining community connections, enhancing social support and reducing social isolation. SAGE, the first publicly funded senior center for LGBT older adults in the US, serves a traditionally under-served population with a vast array of

Correlates of senior center participation: a national analysis.

This paper presents results of a logit regression analysis of the correlates of senior center participation for a national sample of 13,737 elders from the Supplement on Aging of the 1984 National Health Interview Survey. Significant characteristics were higher levels of social interaction, decreasing income, living alone, fewer ADL-IADL difficulties, being female, and living in suburbs and rural nonfarm areas. Curvilinear relationships between center use and age and education were found. Race, self-reported health status, and residence in urban and rural farm areas were nonsignificant when th

"Worth the Walk": Culturally Tailored Stroke Risk Factor Reduction Intervention in Community Senior Centers.

Background Racial/ethnic minority older adults have worse stroke burden than non-Hispanic white and younger counterparts. Our academic-community partner team tested a culturally tailored 1-month (8-session) intervention to increase walking and stroke knowledge among Latino, Korean, Chinese, and black seniors. Methods and Results We conducted a randomized wait-list controlled trial of 233 adults aged 60 years and older, with a history of hypertension, recruited from senior centers. Outcomes were measured at baseline (T0), immediately after the 1-month intervention (T1), and 2 months later (T2).

Tuberculosis Contact Investigations Conducted in New York City Adult Day Care and Senior Centers, 2011-2018.

OBJECTIVES: Multiple tuberculosis (TB) exposures have been reported in New York City (NYC) adult day care and senior centers. Strategies to identify TB transmission at such locations are needed. METHOD: Review of the NYC TB Registry identified 12 contact investigations (CIs) at adult day care or senior centers (2011-2018). RESULTS: Median age of the 12 index patients was 81 years. Of 148 contacts identified who had no history of TB infection or disease, 141 (95%) were tested for TB, primarily with interferon gamma release assays; 46 (33%) tested positive. Transmission was probable (n = 3) or

Impact of senior center friendships on aging women who live alone.

Elderly women who live alone are considered at greater risk for loneliness, depression, and decreased mobility. This paper examines the influences of late-life friendships and senior center activities on the health and well-being of aging women living alone. Based on the findings from 274 women living alone it was found that the senior center is an excellent environment where new supportive friendships can easily be formed. These friendships and other center activities have positive mental and physical outcomes. Using a comparison group of 171 elderly women living with their spouses, it was di

Life-Space Mobility, Transportation, and the Companionship Network of Members of a Hispanic Senior Center.

OBJECTIVES: Companions (i.e., friends who spend time together) are important for the well-being of older adults. Senior centers in the United States are places for older adults to participate in group activities and form and maintain companionships. However, differences in mobility and transportation may affect the ability of older adults to leverage senior center activities into actual companionships. METHODS: This social network analysis was conducted to characterize the companionship network among members of a senior center in relation to their life-space mobility and transportation resour

Motivations for accepting or refusing Covid-19 vaccination in nursing homes and long-term care centers in France: the Vaccovid-senior study.

Vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 remains the most powerful strategy to fight against the Covid-19 pandemic around the word. Nevertheless, the level of complete vaccination (including all recommended boosters) is not optimal, even in the most vulnerable population, i.e. older adults living in nursing homes (NH) and long-term care units (LTCU). In this context, the understanding of the patients' reluctance to vaccination seems particularly important and our objective was to understand the acceptance or refusal mechanisms of the Covid-19 vaccine among people living in NH and LTCU. Mind-body techniques, race-ethnicity, and depression among urban senior center participants.

As the older adult population grows and becomes more diverse, more of its members are turning to complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). There are mixed findings regarding racial and ethnic differences in the use of CAM. This article explores racial and ethnic differences in use of a category of CAM known as mind-body techniques (MBT) among senior center participants with symptoms of depression. It also examines the relationship between use of MBT and depression severity. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with a representative sample of senior center participants in New York City, f

Predictors of senior center use among older adults in New York City public housing.

Despite agreement among stakeholders that senior centers can promote physical and mental health, research on senior center use in urban populations is limited. Our objective was to describe demographic and health factors associated with senior center use among urban, low-income older adults in order to inform programming and outreach efforts. We used data from a 2009 telephone survey of 1036 adults randomly selected from rosters of New York City public housing residents aged 65 and older. We analyzed senior center use by race/ethnicity, age, gender, health, housing type, and income, and used a
