Metabolism and Functions of Amino Acids in Sense Organs.

Sense organs (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and skin) provide senses of sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch, respectively, to aid the survival, development, learning, and adaptation of humans and other animals (including fish). Amino acids (AAs) play an important role in the growth, development, and functions of the sense organs. Recent work has identified receptor-mediated mechanisms responsible for the chemosensory transduction of five basic taste qualities (sweet, sour, bitter, umami and salty tastes). Abnormal metabolism of AAs result in a structural deformity of tissues and their dysfunct

Evidence for distinct signaling mechanisms in two mammalian olfactory sense organs.

In mammals, olfactory stimuli are detected by sensory neurons at two distinct sites: the olfactory epithelium (OE) of the nasal cavity and the neuroepithelium of the vomeronasal organ (VNO). While the OE can detect volatile chemicals released from numerous sources, the VNO appears to be specialized to detect pheromones that are emitted by other animals and that convey information of behavioral or physiological importance. The mechanisms underlying sensory transduction in the OE have been well studied and a number of components of the transduction cascade have been cloned. Here, we investigated

Quantitative study of Scarpa's ganglion and vestibular sense organs in endolymphatic hydrops.

The density of vestibular hair cells and the number of neurons in Scarpa's ganglion were estimated for 11 temporal bones with endolymphatic hydrops. The ten subjects from which these bones were taken all exhibited decreased caloric response (when tested), fluctuating hearing loss, and episodic vertigo. The degeneration of vestibular sense organs was found within the "normal" range for all except one case, which showed total degeneration of the posterior crista ampullaris. Ganglion cell counts in all cases were low. In three of the ten subjects, counts fell below the lowest values seen in a sam

Ampullary sense organs, peripheral, central and behavioral electroreception in chimeras (Hydrolagus, Holocephali, Chondrichthyes).

Ampullary sense organs are distributed in groups over the head of Hydrolagus colliei with their pores in clusters and innervated by the buccal, hyomandibular and superficial ophthalmic branches of the anterior lateral line nerve. The ampullae contain ciliated sense cells in an alveolate-shaped epithelium, which communicates to the surface through a jelly-filled tube. The sense cells synapse at their bases with the afferent nerve fibers that terminate in the dorsal nucleus of the anterior lateral line lobe of the medulla. The anatomy and ultrastructure support the homology with the ampullae of

Embryonic development of the head and neck: part 4, organs of special sense.

A synopsis of the embryonic development of the eye, the ear, and the olfactory organ and taste buds is presented. The eye is discussed in terms of the sensory and nonsensory protions of the eyeball and of such associated structures as the extrinsic eye muscles, eyelids, conjuctiva, and lacrimal apparatus. The embryology of the internal, middle, and external ear is reviewed, as well as positional changes of both the eye and ear relative to other sturctures of the head and neck. Various congenital defects affecting the eye and ear are also discussed.

Choline acetyltransferase immunoreactive neurons innervating labyrinthine and lateral line sense organs in amphibians.

The goal of the present study was to investigate aspects of the central organization of the neurons belonging to the octavolateralis efferent system of amphibians. The perikarya of three genera, Pleurodeles, Xenopus, and Discoglossus, were located in the brainstem by applying retrograde tracers to the appropriate cranial nerves and choline acetyltransferase immunohistochemistry was used to identify cholinergic neurons. The efferent neurons supplying lateral line (Pleurodeles, Xenopus) and labyrinthine (Pleurodeles, Xenopus, and Discoglossus) end organs were found to intermingle in a single oct

Sense and non-sense of imaging in the era of organ preservation for rectal cancer.

This review summarizes the current applications and benefits of imaging modalities for organ preservation in the treatment of rectal cancer. The concept of organ preservation in the treatment of rectal cancer has revolutionized the way rectal cancer is managed. Initially, organ preservation was limited to patients with locally advanced rectal cancer who needed neoadjuvant therapy to reduce tumor size before surgery and achieved complete response. However, neoadjuvant therapy is now increasingly utilized for smaller and less aggressive tumors to achieve primary organ preservation. Additionally,

Formaldehyde sensing by fluorescent organic sensors.

Formaldehyde is a simple molecule that can be found in different environments, having several toxic effects on both the environment and, unfortunately, humans. Therefore, the development of formaldehyde detection methods is fundamental. For this purpose, optical sensors are used, which are practical, fast and easy-to-use devices. The ideal sensor should exhibit high selectivity, sensitivity and short response time. This review summarizes the recent development in this field, highlighting the sensing properties of the systems in terms of sensitivity, selectivity and limit of detection. A compar

The brain and the corresponding sense organs in calanoid copepods - Evidence of vestiges of compound eyes.

Copepoda is one of the crustacean taxa with still unresolved phylogenetic relationships within Tetraconata. Recent phylogenomic studies place them close to Malacostraca and Cirripedia. Little is known about the morphological details of the copepod nervous system, and the available data are sometimes contradictory. We investigated several representatives of the subgroup Calanoida using immunohistochemical labeling against alpha-tubulin and various neuroactive substances, combining this with confocal laser scanning analysis and 3D reconstruction. Our results show that the studied copepods exhibi

Does disease-irrelevant intrathecal synthesis in multiple sclerosis make sense in the light of tertiary lymphoid organs?

Although partly disease-irrelevant, intrathecal immunoglobulins (Ig) synthesis is a typical feature of multiple sclerosis (MS) and is driven by the tertiary lymphoid organs (TLO). A long-known hallmark of this non-specific intrathecal synthesis is the MRZ pattern, an intrathecal synthesis of Ig against measles, rubella, and zoster viruses. This non-specific intrathecal synthesis could also be directed against a wide range of pathogens. However, it is highly problematic since brain TLO should not be able to drive the clonal expansion of lymphocytes against alien antigens that are thought to be

Directional Hydrodynamic Sensing by Free-Swimming Organisms.

Many aquatic organisms detect the presence of moving objects in their environment, such as predators, by sensing the hydrodynamic disturbances the movements produce. The resultant water flow is readily detectable by stationary organisms, but free-swimming organisms are carried with the surrounding water and may not detect the bulk surrounding flow, which limits the available information about the source. We have developed a theory that clarifies what information is contained in disturbances generated by an attacking predator that is available to a free-swimming organism and might be extracted

Development of gravity-sensing organs in altered gravity.

Experiments are described in which the development of the gravity-sensing organs was studied in newt larvae reared in microgravity on the IML-2 mission and in Aplysia embryos and larvae reared on a centrifuge at 1 to 5 g. In Aplysia embryos, the statolith (single dense mass on which gravity and linear acceleration act) was reduced in size in a graded fashion at increasing g. In early post-metamorphic Aplysia or even in isolated statocysts from such animals, the number of statoconia produced is reduced at high g. Newt larvae launched before any of the otoconia were formed and reared for 15 days

Mechanisms and meaning of cellular oxygen sensing in the organism.

Oxygen sensors in the body induce various cell activities to avoid any mismatch between oxygen demand and oxygen supply and to maintain an optimal level of oxygen partial pressure (PO2) in various organs. Oxygen sensing seems to be a well conserved process among procaryontic and eucaryontic cells. The molecular mechanism of oxygen sensing is unknown, but it has been suggested that a hemeprotein is involved that does not participate in the mitochondrial energy production. As examplified on the carotid body and on erythropoietin producing HepG2 cells, a cytochrome b was described for the NAD(P)H

Recalibrating sleep: is recalibration and readjustment of sense organs and brain-body connections the core function of sleep?

Sleep is an enigma because we all know what it means and does to us, yet a scientific explanation for why animals including humans need to sleep is still lacking. However, the enigma can be resolved if the animal body is regarded as a purposeful machine whose moving parts are coordinated with spatial information provided by a disparate array of sense organs. The performance of all complex machines deteriorates with time due to inevitable instrument drift of the individual sensors combined with wear and tear of the moving parts which result in declining precision and coordination. Peak performa

Bioimaging of sense organs and the central nervous system in extant fishes and reptiles in situ: A review.

Bioimaging is changing the field of sensory biology, especially for taxa that are lesser-known, rare, and logistically difficult to source. When integrated with traditional neurobiological approaches, developing an archival, digital repository of morphological images can offer the opportunity to improve our understanding of whole neural systems without the issues of surgical intervention and negate the risk of damage and artefactual interpretation. This review focuses on current approaches to bioimaging the peripheral (sense organs) and central (brain) nervous systems in extant fishes (cartila

Anatomy and histology of the brain and sense organs of the Antarctic eel cod Muraenolepis microps (Gadiformes; Muraenolepididae).

Brain regions, cranial nerves, and sense organs in Muraenolepis microps, an Antarctic gadiform fish, were examined to determine which features could be attributed to a gadiform ancestry and which to habitation of Antarctic waters. We found that the central nervous system and sense organs are well developed, showing neither substantial regression nor hypertrophy. A detailed drawing of the brain and cranial nerves is provided. The rostral position of the olfactory bulbs and telencephalic size and lobation are common for the order. The optic tectum and corpus cerebelli are smaller than in most ot
