Abnormal sense of agency in eating disorders.

The feeling of controlling one's own actions and, through them, impacting the external environment (i.e. Sense of Agency-SoA) can be relevant in the eating disorders (EDs) symptomatology. Yet, it has been poorly investigated. This study aims to implicitly assess SoA exploiting the Sensory Attenuation paradigm in two groups of EDs patients (Anorexia Nervosa Restrictive and Anorexia Nervosa Binge-Purging or Bulimia Nervosa) compared to a control group. We find that controls perceive self-generated stimuli as less intense than other-generated ones showing the classic pattern of sensory attenuatio

Artificial vibrotactile feedback elicits neural correlates of sense of agency.

BACKGROUND: The Sense of Agency (SoA) refers to the subjective experience of having control over our own actions and their outcomes. SoA is experienced when there is a match between the predicted and actual sensory outcomes of an intended motor action. Thus, receiving sensory feedback related to motor actions is essential for the formation of the SoA. As a consequence, individuals with sensory loss due to neuropathies or limb impairments might experience reduced SoA. Therefore, incorporating artificial sensory feedback in assistive technologies (e.g. prosthetics, exoskeletons, sensory substitu

Sense of agency strengthens memory for self-caused spatial information.

Why do some experiences remain vivid while others fade? One factor may be the sense of agency (SoA), which shares self-referential mechanisms with episodic memory. We investigated whether SoA over action outcomes modulates item and spatial long-term memory. During intentional encoding, participants' keypresses moved an object either congruently or incongruently with the chosen direction. One hour later, item and spatial memory were tested. Participants reported higher SoA in congruent trials. Congruency and higher SoA ratings were associated with faster item-recognition responses without chang

Sense of agency disturbances in movement disorders: A comprehensive review.

Sense of agency refers to the experience that one's self-generated action causes an event in the external environment. Here, we review the behavioural and brain evidence of aberrant experiences of agency in movement disorders, clinical conditions characterized by either a paucity or an excess of movements unrelated to the patient's intention. We show that specific abnormal agency experiences characterize several movement disorders. Those manifestations are typically associated with structural and functional brain abnormalities. However, the evidence is sometimes conflicting, especially when co

Sense of agency during and following recovery from anorexia nervosa.

The need to feel in control is central to anorexia nervosa (AN). The sense of control in AN has only been studied through self-report. This study investigated whether implicit sense of control (sense of agency; SoA) differs across AN patients, recovered AN (RAN) patients and healthy controls (HC). Furthermore, we assessed whether state anxiety is influenced by negative emotional states. SoA was measured with the intentional binding task (IB) and state-anxiety levels through a questionnaire. We did not find any evidence of differences in SoA between groups. Furthermore, state anxiety was not a

Modulating human sense of agency with non-invasive brain stimulation.

Human voluntary actions are accompanied by a distinctive subjective experience termed "sense of agency". We performed three experiments using transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to modulate brain circuits involved in control of action, while measuring stimulation-induced changes in one implicit measure of sense of agency, namely the perceived temporal relationship between a voluntary action and tone triggered by the action. Participants perceived such tones as shifted towards the action that caused them, relative to baseline conditions with tones but no actions. Actions that caused

AI agency drives college students' entrepreneurial thinking through human sense of agency in human and ai symbiosis.

As artificial intelligence (AI) increasingly penetrates education and entrepreneurial practice, cultivating students' entrepreneurial thinking in a "human-AI symbiotic" environment has become a crucial issue in entrepreneurship education. Based on symbiotic agency theory and triadic reciprocal determinism, this study constructs a theoretical model of "AI agency-human sense of agency-entrepreneurial thinking," using opportunity recognition and creativity as the core dimensions of entrepreneurial thinking to examine how AI agency is associated with college students' entrepreneurial cognition. Me in action: Distinct processing levels shape the relationship between sense of agency and sense of ownership.

Competing neurocognitive models offer different accounts of how the sense of agency (the experience of controlling one's actions) and the sense of ownership (the experience that one's body belongs to oneself) relate within bodily self-awareness. The additive model proposes that agency entails ownership, the independence model treats the two experiences as functionally distinct, and the interactive model suggests reciprocal influences between them. However, empirical tests comparing these predictions within a single coherent experimental paradigm remain limited. Here, we developed an immersive

Risk-taking in automated tasks: The role of sense of agency.

Automation improves task performance, yet it also systematically alters how operators take risks. Which characteristics of automation drive this change, and through what psychological mechanism, remains unresolved: the sense of agency has often been implicated but never quantitatively tested as a mediator. By quantifying sense of agency through subjective ratings, this research explored the impact of automation level and reliability level on risk-taking. Experiment 1 showed that automation reduced risk-taking. Experiment 2 showed that higher automation level was associated with lower sense of

Shared Responsibility Decreases the Sense of Agency in the Human Brain.

Sharing responsibility in social decision-making helps individuals use the flexibility of the collective context to benefit themselves by claiming credit for good outcomes or avoiding the blame for bad outcomes. Using magnetoencephalography, we examined the neuronal basis of the impact that social context has on this flexible sense of responsibility. Participants performed a gambling task in various social contexts and reported feeling less responsibility when playing as a member of a team. A reduced magnetoencephalography outcome processing effect was observed as a function of decreasing resp

The causal neural substrates underpinning prospective and retrospective sense of agency.

Sense of agency (SoA) is the subjective feeling of authorship experienced over one's actions and their subsequent sensory outcomes. Despite extensive theoretical accounts of this experience, there remains a dearth of literature investigating its causal neural substrates. To address this, we modulated neural activity of two regions thought to be critical to the agentic experience, namely the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (l-dlPFC), and the left temporoparietal junction (l-TPJ). In a sham-controlled, double-blinded, crossover study 104 healthy young adults were stratified to receive anodal

Dopamine and sense of agency: Determinants in personality and substance use.

Sense of agency refers to the feeling of control over one's own actions. The strength of this sense varies inter-individually. This means that people differ in their perception concerning the intensity of their intentions and actions. The current study aims to determine the factors influencing this sense of agency on a personality level. Furthermore, it gives insight into the correlative relation between the strength of the sense of agency and substance use. The study involved 210 participants who were tested for the experiment (intentional binding paradigm for sense of agency, hand paradigm f

True or false: The effect of numerical magnitude on sense of agency.

Sense of agency (SoA) refers to the feeling that one's actions cause environmental changes. A previous study showed that SoA is enhanced when keypress-triggered motion stimuli move faster, suggesting that SoA depends on the extent of action outcomes. We examined whether the numerical magnitude of action outcomes similarly affects SoA. Participants pressed a key, which triggered the presentation of dots (Experiments 1-2) or digit values (Experiment 3), and then rated their SoA on a 10-point scale. Results showed that SoA ratings increased with greater numerical magnitude. However, Experiments 4

Sense of agency promotes recognition memory: the role of self-referential processing.

Recent research has explored whether sense of agency (SoA) over to-be-remembered items enhances performance in recognition memory tasks, and what the underlying mechanisms might be. The present study systematically investigates the role of self-referential processing in this improvement. Building on the Comparator Model of SoA, we manipulated SoA from two perspectives: retrospective inference (action-outcome consistency) in Experiment 1 and 2, and prospective inference (action volition) in Experiment 3 and 4. In experiment 1 and 3, we replicated the effect of SoA on recognition memory with a s

Neural correlates of an illusionary sense of agency caused by virtual reality.

Sense of agency (SoA) is the sensation that self-actions lead to ensuing perceptual consequences. The prospective mechanism emphasizes that SoA arises from motor prediction and its comparison with actual action outcomes, while the reconstructive mechanism stresses that SoA emerges from retrospective causal processing about the action outcomes. Consistent with the prospective mechanism, motor planning regions were identified by neuroimaging studies using the temporal binding (TB) effect, a behavioral measure often linked to implicit SoA. Yet, TB also occurs during passive observation of another

Implicit and explicit sense of agency in individuals with obsessive-compulsive tendencies.

INTRODUCTION: The sense of agency (SoA), or the perception of control over one's actions and their outcomes, has been proposed to be attenuated in individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and obsessive-compulsive (OC) tendencies. According to the Sense of Agency and Seeking Proxies for Internal States (SPIS) model, individuals with higher OC tendencies (HOC) may exhibit an altered SoA characterized by diminished tone binding but heightened action binding compared to individuals with lower OC tendencies (LOC). METHODS: To investigate this, 29 healthy participants completed a tempor

The relationship between the sense of self-agency and schizotypal personality traits.

People with schizotypal traits may possess abnormal self-awareness, particularly with regard to their sense of self-agency, that is, the sense that it is oneself who is causing or generating an action. Participants in Experiments 1A (N = 11), 1B (N = 12), and 2 (N = 20) moved a mouse device and viewed resultant feedback, which was biased either temporally or spatially. They then judged whether there was a bias or whether they felt they had moved the cursor on their own. The authors found, for the 1st time, that a sense of self-agency can be experienced even if some degree of temporal bias is p

Eyes that bind us: Gaze leading induces an implicit sense of agency.

Humans feel a sense of agency over the effects their motor system causes. This is the case for manual actions such as pushing buttons, kicking footballs, and all acts that affect the physical environment. We ask whether initiating joint attention - causing another person to follow our eye movement - can elicit an implicit sense of agency over this congruent gaze response. Eye movements themselves cannot directly affect the physical environment, but joint attention is an example of how eye movements can indirectly cause social outcomes. Here we show that leading the gaze of an on-screen face in

TMS stimulation over the inferior parietal cortex disrupts prospective sense of agency.

Sense of agency refers to the feeling of controlling an external event through one's own action. On one influential view, sense of agency is inferred after an action, by "retrospectively" comparing actual effects of actions against their intended effects. However, it has been recently shown that earlier processes, linked to action selection, may also contribute to sense of agency, in advance of the action itself, and independently of action effects. The inferior parietal cortex (IPC) may underpin this "prospective" contribution to agency, by monitoring signals relating to fluency of action sel

A Turkish translation and validation of the Sense of Agency Scale (SoAS-TR).

The sense of agency is defined as the experience of being the initiator of one's actions and of influencing one's surroundings. It represents a fundamental aspect of action monitoring, self-recognition, and the ability to distinguish one's own actions from external events. Disturbances in the sense of agency have been reported across various psychiatric conditions, underscoring the need for valid self-report tools. However, no validated measure has been available to assess general agency beliefs in Turkish. This study aimed to adapt the Sense of Agency Scale into Turkish and evaluate its psych
