Distal sensory polyneuropathy in the context of HIV/AIDS.

Peripheral neuropathy, or distal sensory polyneuropathy (DSPN), is the most common neurological problem in HIV disease. DSPN also represents a complex symptom that occurs because of peripheral nerve damage related to advanced HIV disease and in association with the use of antiretroviral therapy-particularly in individuals treated with dideoxynucleosides. Although DSPN is a frequent symptom, the specific pathophysiology is not well understood. The HIV-related neuropathies are commonly categorized as distal sensory polyneuropathies, although antiretroviral toxic neuropathies are described in the

[Psychiatric disorders and sensory deprivation in AIDS. Case report].

In AIDS there are several opportunistic infections that may occur. Some of them can lead to blindness (for example toxoplasmosis, CMV). It is known that psychiatric disorders can also occur in AIDS. Both situations can take place at the same time. In that case we face the diagnostic problem: Are psychiatric disorders a result of the sensoric deprivation connected with sudden blindness or organic changes in the brain caused by HIV? In our article we described the case of a 37 years old woman who had that kind of symptoms.

Gracile tract degeneration in patients with sensory neuropathy and AIDS.

At autopsy, four homosexual men with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) were found to have selective degeneration of the gracile tract, a finding previously unreported in AIDS. Clinically, these patients had progressive lower extremity paresthesias and dysesthesias with reduced or absent ankle jerks, and eventually they developed dementia. Postmortem examination of spinal cords showed a striking loss of both axons and myelin sheaths confined to the fasciculus gracilis, with the most severe involvement in upper thoracic or cervical segments. Lumbar dorsal columns showed only a mild fiber

Distal sensory polyneuropathy (DSP) is the most common neurological problem in HIV/AIDS Patients. It represents a complex symptom that occurs because of peripheral nerve damage related to advanced HIV disease and in association with the use of antiretroviral therapy. DSP is a frequent symptom in which the specific pathophysiology is not well understood. Recently, mitochondrial toxicity and antiretroviral toxic neuropathies have been more identified as a possible etiology of DSP. This study's objective was to determine factors associated with DSP severity in HIV/AIDS patients. This cross-sectio

Improving staff awareness of sensory aid needs and dementia status in an old age ward.

BACKGROUND: Having initially done our critical appraisal of various studies, we found that geriatric wards have a higher prevalence of delirium and dementia. Among this older population, sensory aids were found to be important in orientating delirious patients, and deficits in vision/hearing were associated with an increased risk of delirium. Delirium and dementia are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. This quality improvement project aimed to increase staff awareness of patient sensory aid needs and thus improve patient care as a result. METHODS: We started off with a driver

Intelligent Sensory Pen for Aiding in the Diagnosis of Parkinson's Disease from Dynamic Handwriting Analysis.

In this paper, we propose a pen device capable of detecting specific features from dynamic handwriting tests for aiding on automatic Parkinson's disease identification. The method used in this work uses machine learning to compare the raw signals from different sensors in the device coupled to a pen and extract relevant information such as tremors and hand acceleration to diagnose the patient clinically. Additionally, the datasets composed of raw signals from healthy and Parkinson's disease patients acquired here are made available to further contribute to research related to this topic.

Didanosine causes sensory neuropathy in an HIV/AIDS animal model: impaired mitochondrial and neurotrophic factor gene expression.

Antiretroviral toxic neuropathy (ATN) has become a common peripheral neuropathy among HIV/AIDS patients, for which the underlying pathogenesis is uncertain. Indeed, no models exist for ATN that assess the interaction between retroviral infection and antiretroviral therapy. Herein, we developed ex vivo and in vivo models of ATN induced by didanosine (ddI) following infection by the lentivirus, feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), permitting us to address the working hypothesis that ddI mediates ATN through mitochondrial injury in neurons. We investigated neuronal morphology, neurobehavioural te

Magnitude of peripheral sensory neuropathy and associated factors among HIV/AIDS clients receiving care at public health institutions, Northwest Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: In the mid-1990s, the development of combination antiretroviral therapy converted HIV infection into a chronic condition, with newly diagnosed patients now living longer than the general population. HIV affects both the central and peripheral nerve systems, resulting in a variety of clinical problems, including peripheral neuropathy, which is a common neurological consequence. Despite this, there is a scarcity of data on the extent of peripheral sensory neuropathy and its underlying factors in Ethiopia, necessitating this study. OBJECTIVE: The primary goal of this study is to asse

Continuous release of mefloquine featured in electrospun fiber membranes alleviates epidural fibrosis and aids in sensory neurological function after lumbar laminectomy.

Recurrent low back pain after spinal surgeries, such as lumbar laminectomy, is a major complication of excessive epidural fibrosis. Although multiple preclinical and clinical methods have been aimed at ameliorating epidural fibrosis, their safety and efficacy remain largely unclear. Single implanted electrospun fibrous membranes provide physical barriers that can decrease tissue fibrosis after surgery; however, they also trigger local inflammation due to the implantation of a foreign body, thus subsequently attenuating their anti-fibrosis properties. Here, we designed a strategy that permits e

Hearing Aid Amplification Improves Postural Control for Older Adults With Hearing Loss When Other Sensory Cues Are Impoverished.

Recent studies suggest that sound amplification via hearing aids can improve postural control in adults with hearing impairments. Unfortunately, only a few studies used well-defined posturography measures to assess balance in adults with hearing loss with and without their hearing aids. Of these, only two examined postural control specifically in the elderly with hearing loss. The present study examined the impact of hearing aid use on postural control during various sensory perturbations in older adults with age-related hearing loss. Thirty individuals with age-related hearing impairments and

Production of high sensory quality Shiitake mushroom (Lentinus edodes) by pulsed air-impingement jet drying (AID) technique.

The effect of pulsed air-impingement jet drying (AID) on the sensory qualities of Shiitake mushroom was comprehensively examined compared with hot air drying (HAD) and vacuum freeze-drying (VFD). AID considerably improved the characteristic flavors (onion-like odor and umami) of dried mushrooms by partially inhibiting enzymatic and Maillard reactions. The texture characteristics (rehydration and shrinkage) of AID mushrooms had no significant difference to VFD ones and were better than HAD ones. AID combined the advantages of HAD and VFD technologies and outperformed HAD and VFD in terms of ove

Uncomfortable loudness levels in experienced unilateral and bilateral hearing aid users: evidence of adaptive plasticity following asymmetrical sensory input?

Munro and Trotter [Inter J Audiol 45, 684-688, 2006] reported an asymmetry in uncomfortable loudness levels (ULLs) in a preliminary study using 12 experienced unilateral hearing aids users. The aim of the present study was to investigate ULLs in a larger sample of listeners with unilateral and bilateral hearing aid experience. Participants were adults with symmetrical high-frequency hearing impairment. There were 48 listeners with unilateral experience, 13 listeners with bilateral experience and a control group of 47 listeners with no hearing aid experience. The minimum duration of hearing aid

Primary or secondary tasks? Dual-task interference between cyclist hazard perception and cadence control using cross-modal sensory aids with rider assistance bike computers.

This research investigated the risks involved in bicycle riding while using various sensory modalities to deliver training information. To understand the risks associated with using bike computers, this study evaluated hazard perception performance through lab-based simulations of authentic riding conditions. Analysing hazard sensitivity (d') of signal detection theory, the rider's response time, and eye glances provided insights into the risks of using bike computers. In this study, 30 participants were tested with eight hazard perception tasks while they maintained a cadence of 60 ± 5 RPM an

The role of visual deprivation and experience on the performance of sensory substitution devices.

It is commonly accepted that the blind can partially compensate for their loss of vision by developing enhanced abilities with their remaining senses. This visual compensation may be related to the fact that blind people rely on their other senses in everyday life. Many studies have indeed shown that experience plays an important role in visual compensation. Numerous neuroimaging studies have shown that the visual cortices of the blind are recruited by other functional brain areas and can become responsive to tactile or auditory input instead. These cross-modal plastic changes are more pronoun

Low vision aids and the presbyope.

When light rays emerge divergent from a low vision device, a presbyopic patient requires a near addition to focus the image. The magnitude of the divergence and the near addition power used by a presbyope can substantially alter the magnification effects of a device. This study examines the effects of different emerging divergences and near addition powers on the magnification of low vision devices. The emerging divergence of 54 fixed focus stand magnifiers was measured using trial lenses and a telescope. The magnifiers represented a range of powers and manufacturers. The emerging divergence w
