The Sensory Gating Inventory (SGI) is a 36-item measure used to assess an individual's subjective ability to modulate, filter, over-include, discriminate, attend to, and tolerate sensory stimuli. Due to its theoretical and empirical link with sensory processing deficits, this measure has been used extensively in studies of psychosis and other psychopathology. The current work fills a need within the field for a briefer measure of sensory gating aberrations that maintains the original measure's utility. For this purpose, large samples (total n = 1552) were recruited from 2 independent sites for

Previous studies with prepulse inhibition in panic disorder (PD) have suggested that the early stages of sensory information processing are abnormal in patients with PD. To further investigate sensory gating function in panic disorder we performed a case-control study in a sample of 28 patients with PD, compared to 28 normal subjects and 28 schizophrenic subjects evaluating auditory mid-latency evoked potential P50 in a double-click paradigm as a measure of sensory gating. PD subjects showed weaker sensory gating as evidenced by higher P50 ratios as compared to normal subjects (62.5% vs. 45.4%

BACKGROUND: Some neurochemical evidence as well as recent studies on molecular genetics suggest that pathologic gambling may be related to dysregulated dopamine neurotransmission.
METHODS: The current study examined sensory (motor) gating in pathologic gamblers as a putative measure of endogenous brain dopamine activity with prepulse inhibition of the acoustic startle eye-blink response and the auditory P300 event-related potential. Seventeen pathologic gamblers and 21 age- and gender-matched healthy control subjects were assessed. Both prepulse inhibition measures were recorded under passive

The sensory disturbance in schizophrenia is often described as an inability to filter out extraneous noise from meaningful sensory inputs. The neurobiological basis of this inability to filter has been examined using auditory evoked potentials, which are computerized averages of the brain's electrical response to sound. The sounds are presented in pairs to test the ability of the brain to inhibit, or gate, its response to a repeated stimulus. Schizophrenic patients lack the ability to gate the neuronal response shown by a particular wave, the P50 wave. The measurement of this deficit in human

Sensory gating, indexed by P50 suppression, and sensorimotor gating, indexed by prepulse inhibition (PPI), are impaired in schizophrenia spectrum disorders. There is considerable evidence that schizophrenia patients treated with atypical antipsychotics exhibit relatively less gating deficits than do other patients with schizophrenia. Some recent studies have investigated the effects of antipsychotic medications on gating in healthy volunteers exhibiting low levels of gating, rather than in patients. Therefore, the current study investigated the influence of sertindole versus placebo in two sep

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The voltage-gated Na+ channel NaV1.9 is a determinant of excitability in sensory neurons, yet the upstream G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) that regulate its activity remain poorly defined. Here, we identify GPR35 as a modulator of NaV1.9 function in dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons, establishing a previously unrecognized receptor-channel signalling axis.
EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: Transcriptomics of NaV1.9-expressing neurons, proximity ligation assays, patch-clamp electrophysiology in primary mouse DRG neurons and a genetic mouse model were combined to assess spatial

Tinnitus is the perception of sound without the presence of an external stimulus. The mechanisms associated with tinnitus are not entirely known, making diagnosis and treatment challenging. Although tinnitus mechanisms are not entirely known, there is evidence supporting an association between tinnitus with cochlear damage, reduced inhibition, and atypical cortical function. These mechanisms have been studied in animal models and people with tinnitus using a variety of different approaches. One approach that is a possible indicator of tinnitus in humans is sensory or auditory gating, which is

Sensory processing sensitivity (SPS) is a personality trait characterized by heightened responsiveness to environmental stimuli, yet its neurophysiological mechanisms remain unclear. Sensory gating (SG), an inhibitory process that suppresses redundant or irrelevant sensory inputs, is often assessed through event-related potentials (ERPs) but may also rely on non-phase-locked oscillatory activity. The present study examined SG in individuals with high versus low SPS using both time-domain and time-frequency electrophysiological measures while strictly controlling for serotonin transporter polym

Panic disorder (PD) has been linked to abnormalities in information processing. However, only little evidence has been published for sensory gating in PD. Sensory gating describes the brain's ability to exclude stimuli of low relevance from higher level information processing, thereby sustaining efficient cognitive processing. Deficits in sensory gating have been associated with various psychiatric conditions, most prominently schizophrenia. In this case-control event-related potential study, we tested 32 patients with PD and 39 healthy controls in a double click paradigm. Both groups were com

Sensory and sensorimotor gating deficits characterize both Tourette syndrome (TS) and schizophrenia. Premonitory urges (PU) in TS can be assessed with the University of Sao Paulo Sensory Phenomena Scale (USP-SPS) and the Premonitory Urge for Tics Scale (PUTS). In 40 subjects (TS: n = 18; healthy comparison subjects [HCS]: n = 22), we examined the relationship between PU scores and measures of sensory gating using the USP-SPS, PUTS, Sensory Gating Inventory (SGI), and Structured Interview for Assessing Perceptual Anomalies (SIAPA), as well symptom severity scales. SGI, but not SIAPA, scores wer

There is a current popular recognition that cigarette smoking is deleterious to health. Although this is very clearly the case for physical health, the situation regarding mental health is, however, rather more complicated. This piece concentrates on the role of smoking in schizophrenia: it is important to consider why schizophrenia, exceptionally amongst the severe and enduring mental illnesses, is associated with increased cigarette consumption. People who suffer from schizophrenia consequently have a greater risk of the complications to physical health caused by this addiction and clearly,

The auditory striatum, a caudal sensory-related region of the basal ganglia, has emerged as an important node linking auditory processing to behavioral responses. It integrates bottom-up auditory information conveyed by thalamic and cortical pathways, while top-down cortical signals and neuromodulatory dopamine inputs dynamically shape this integration, positioning the auditory striatum as a flexible interface between sensory processing and action. Recent circuit-level studies suggest that this region contributes to auditory information filtering, temporal processing, and auditory-guided decis

OBJECTIVES: Sensory gating (SG) is the ability to differentiate novel or salient sensory input from known or irrelevant information. In tinnitus, SG is considered dysfunctional, as the brain fails to inhibit internal auditory neural activity before it reaches conscious perception. As a result, the brain continuously processes the tinnitus signal as if it was a new and relevant stimulus. SG can be assessed with a self-report tool, the Sensory Gating Inventory (SGI).
DESIGN: A prospective questionnaire study was performed in persons with tinnitus (n = 358) and a control group without tinnitus (

PURPOSE: The goal of this study was to observe sensory gating-related networks underlying cortical auditory evoked potential (CAEP) peak components in individuals with and without minimal tinnitus, as measured using the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI). This analysis was performed on previously published sensory gating responses in normal-hearing adults with and without minimal tinnitus.
METHOD: Independent component analysis was performed for each individual CAEP gating component (Pa, P50, N1, and P2). Significant components were retained for source localization analyses within the followin

The involvement of neural substrates in respiratory sensory gating remained unclear. This study aimed to investigate cortical and subcortical activations associated with respiratory sensory gating by using functional magnetic resonance imaging. First, we hypothesized that paired occlusions would induce neural activation in cortical and subcortical areas, including the thalamus and sensorimotor cortices. Secondly, we hypothesized that, in terms of parameter estimates in the general linear model, the activation effect size β ratios (βpaired/βsingle) would be less than 2 due to central neural gat

Sensory gating refers to the suppression of the neuronal response to a repeating stimulus and is considered a protection mechanism in the brain. In this study, we assessed gating of the mid-latency components of the visual evoked potentials (N75, P100, N150) in 11 healthy individuals using a paired-flash paradigm. A significant decrease of P100 and N150 amplitudes was shown; additionally, a significant increase in the latency of N75 and P100 for the second stimulus of the pair compared with the first one was also observed. Absolute power of the stimulus 2 signal at theta frequency was signific

BACKGROUND: Some tinnitus participants habituate to their tinnitus, but some others do not and complain of its annoyance so much. It has been suggested that tinnitus is a habituation deficit. Habituation and the ability to ignore a sensory input depend on the normal function of filtering mechanism of sensory gating.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare behavioral aspects of sensory gating in normal and tinnitus participants to search for the reason why some tinnitus participants habituate to their tinnitus but some others do not.
RESEARCH DESIGN: This investigation was an observ

UNLABELLED: Sensory gating deficit, assessed by a paired auditory stimulus paradigm (P50), has been reported as a stable marker of schizophrenia. The aim of this study was to explore if this neurophysiological disturbance also fulfilled stability criteria in the bipolar disorder (BD) spectrum bipolar, as state independence is one of the main points to be considered as a potential endophenotype of the illness. The P50 evoked potential was studied in 95 healthy controls and 126 bipolar euthymic patients. Euthymia was established according to Van Gorp's criteria. Bipolar I and II subtypes were an
