The effect of acupuncture on sensory thresholds was studied in 6 healthy subjects. The modes of acupuncture studied were: 1. manual stimulation, 2. electrical stimulation at 2 Hz, 3. electrical stimulation at 80 Hz. Superfiscial-acupuncture was used as placebo. Insertions of needles or application of electrodes were bilateral, at St 7 (intrasegmental) or Li 4 (extrasegmental). The study showed that manual or electro-acupuncture were effective when used intrasegmentally, raising pain threshold values 1.1 to 1.4 times that prior to stimulation. The pain threshold elevation obtained was not signi

HYPOTHESES/PURPOSE: Although several studies in the literature have evaluated the abnormal sensory thresholds of diabetic feet to Semmes-Weinstein monofilament testing, there is very limited data on the sensory thresholds of individuals without diabetes or peripheral neuropathy. The purpose of this study was to assess the dorsal and plantar sensation of the feet from 40 healthy, college-aged volunteers using Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments.
CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Semmes-Weinstein testing is a useful tool in predicting which diabetic patients may be at risk for ulceration of the feet. Severa

Declines in sensory functioning with aging are evident for many of the senses. In the present study, thresholds were determined for somatosensory (warming and cooling temperature, pain, touch, and two-point discrimination) and taste stimuli in 178 healthy individuals aged 20-89 yrs. Somatosensory stimuli were applied to the upper lip (glabrous skin) and the chin (hairy skin). The sample was divided into two groups, based on a bimodal split "< 45 yrs" and "≥ 65 yrs". In all instances, there were elevations in thresholds for the older individuals. Further, males were less sensitive than females

Reliable determination of sensory thresholds is the holy grail of signal detection theory. However, there exists no assumption-independent gold standard for the estimation of thresholds based on neurophysiological parameters, although a reliable estimation method is crucial for both scientific investigations and clinical diagnosis. Whenever it is impossible to communicate with the subjects, as in studies with animals or neonates, thresholds have to be derived from neural recordings or by indirect behavioral tests. Whenever the threshold is estimated based on such measures, the standard approac

Quantitative sensory testing (QST) is used to evaluate the function of the somatosensory system in dogs by assessing the response to applied mechanical and thermal stimuli. QST is used to determine normal dogs' sensory thresholds and evaluate alterations in peripheral and central sensory pathways caused by various disease states, including osteoarthritis, spinal cord injury, and cranial cruciate ligament rupture. Mechanical sensory thresholds are measured by electronic von Frey anesthesiometers and pressure algometers. They are determined as the force at which the dog exhibits a response indic

Subjective and objective sensory threshold (Ts, T(ap)) was measured in the sensory fibres of the median and the sural nerves of patients with diabetic neuropathy, Guillain-Barre-Strohl syndrome, hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy (HMSN I and II) as well as in the carpal tunnel syndrome (CNS). A very marked increase of the Ts was found in HMSN I in both nerves investigated. In HMSN II significant increase of Ts were present only in the sural nerve. In CTS significant increase of Ts was found. Measurements of Ts may be useful in the evaluation of the intensity of sensory nerves lesion.

The purpose of this analysis was to examine the effect of sensory retraining on sensory function after bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO). A total of 186 subjects were enrolled in a multi-centre double-blind two parallel group stratified block randomized clinical trial. Subjects were randomized to group immediately after surgery. Threshold measures for contact detection, two-point discrimination and two-point perception were obtained on the chin before and 1, 3 and 6 months and 1 and 2 years after surgery. The ratio of each threshold measure (post-surgery value/pre-surgery value) was ca

BACKGROUND: Acupuncture provides a means of peripheral stimulation for pain relief. However, the detailed neuronal mechanisms by which acupuncture relieves pain are still poorly understood and information regarding optimal treatment settings is still inadequate. Previous studies with a short burst of unilateral electroacupuncture (EA) in the Tendinomuscular Meridians (TMM) treatment model for pain demonstrated a transient dermatomally correlated bilateral analgesic effect with corresponding peripheral modality-specific sensory threshold alterations. However, the impact of EA duration on the an

BACKGROUND: To date, a number of studies on migraine have cross-sectionally evaluated sensory sensitivity with aversion thresholds/scores along the migraine cycle, reporting a decreased tolerance to sensory stimuli in different sensory modalities. Our hypothesis was that patients with migraine would exhibit heightened sensitivity to sound, light, touch and smell on days where they reported greater headache intensity.
METHODS: This is an exploratory, longitudinal study, carried out over the course of 27 days. Aversion thresholds or scores to sound, light, touch and smell were quantified in six

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of different sites and locally applied pressure on vibration thresholds.
METHODS: Vibration thresholds were compared in 47 normal volunteers at 3 sites of the index finger (pulp, dorsum of the middle phalanx and nail) and at two sites of the great toe (dorsum of the proximal phalanx and nail). The effect of local pressure (30, 50 and 100 g/1.22 cm(2)) were compared in 41 subjects at the dorsum of the middle phalanx of the index finger and the proximal phalanx of the great toe.
RESULTS: The hand was more sensitive than the foot for vibration. There were no s

Correlations between personality traits and a wide range of sensory thresholds were examined. Participants (N = 124) completed a personality inventory (NEO-FFI) and underwent assessment of olfactory, trigeminal, tactile and gustatory detection thresholds, as well as examination of trigeminal and tactile pain thresholds. Significantly enhanced odor sensitivity in socially agreeable people, significantly enhanced trigeminal sensitivity in neurotic subjects, and a tendency for enhanced pain tolerance in highly conscientious participants was revealed. It is postulated that varied sensory processin

Quantification of thermal thresholds is a useful method to assess and follow up the function of afferent small A-delta and C-fibres in patients with nerve dysfunctions. The object of this study was to estimate thermal test-retest repeatability in 19 patients with unilateral sciatica (14 L5 and 5 S1) in affected and non-affected dermatomes on the symptomatic (S) and non-symptomatic (NS) sides. Detection thresholds were measured at six sites, two within each of the L4, L5 and S1 dermatomes. The test was repeated after 1-2 h and the coefficient of repeatability (CR=2SD of test-retest differences)

Fibromyalgia syndrome (FM) is characterized by widespread pain and fatigue. People living with FM also experience tactile allodynia, cold-evoked pain, paraesthesia and dysaesthesia. There is evidence of small fibre neuropathy and hyperexcitability of nociceptors in FM; however, the presence of other sensory abnormalities suggests involvement of large diameter sensory fibres. The passive transfer of FM IgG to mice causes cold and mechanical hyperalgesia associated with changes in A- and C-nociceptor function. However, whether FM IgG also confers sensitivity to light touch and whether large diam

OBJECTIVES: Sensory hypersensitivity, central hyperexcitability [lowered nociceptive flexion reflex (NFR) thresholds], and psychologic distress are features of chronic whiplash. However, relationships between these substrates are not clear. This study tested the hypothesis that psychologic distress and catastrophization are correlated with sensory hypersensitivity and NFR responses in chronic whiplash.
METHODS: Pressure and thermal pain thresholds (mean values across 3 body sites), NFR threshold, and pain at threshold Visual Analog Scale were measured in 30 participants with chronic whiplash

Most amputees experience phantom limb sensations and/or phantom limb pain as well as residual limb (stump) pain that are resistant to treatment. Phantom phenomena are not homogeneous; each patient presents with a unique combination of spontaneous or evoked sensations, pain, and/or awareness. In an effort to understand the underlying mechanisms, postamputation pain has been subclassified based on the perceived sensory qualities reported by the individual. However, little is known about the relationship between subjective phantom phenomena and sensory function of the residual stump. The aim of t

BACKGROUND: Unlike motor symptoms, the effects of deep brain stimulation (DBS) on non-motor symptoms associated with dystonia remain unknown.
METHODS: The objective of this study was to assess the effects of DBS on evoked experimental pain and cutaneous sensory thresholds in a crossover, double-blind on/off study and compare these results with those of healthy volunteers (HV).
RESULTS: Sixteen patients with idiopathic dystonia (39.9 ± 13 years old, n = 14 generalized) with DBS of the globus pallidus internus underwent a battery of quantitative sensory testing and assessment using a pain top-

Penile hypersensitivity plays an important role in premature ejaculation (PE), but differences in penile sensitivity among subtypes of PE are unknown. Therefore, we compared penile sensory thresholds in PE subtypes of lifelong and acquired PE, PE with and without erectile dysfunction (ED), PE with an intravaginal ejaculation latency time ≤1 min and >1 min, and PE with and without orgasmic pleasure perceptual dysfunction. During August 2014 to January 2016, 136 patients with PE were included. Penile warm, cold, and vibratory thresholds were measured. Data of clinical characteristics, sexual lif

Perceptual learning in the peripheral visual field was studied in 24 adults using vernier targets. The aim was to relate perceptual improvements to changes of electrical brain activity. Thresholds were measured before, during, and after training, and on the next day. During training, the subjects passively looked at suprathreshold targets, and EEG activity was recorded from 30 electrodes over the occipital brain areas. Mean evoked potentials were computed for the first and second block of 1200 stimulus presentations, and the scalp topography of visual evoked potential (VEP) activity was analys

Chronic tension-type headache (CTTH) is a common disease with no fully defined pathophysiological processes. We designed a study to value electrophysiological responses in these patients and their correlation with possible psychopathological manifestations in order to deepen understanding of central and peripheral mechanisms of CTTH. In 40 patients with CTTH and 40 healthy controls, we used electrical stimulation to determine sensory threshold (SPT) and pain perception threshold (PPT) and the characteristics of the electrophysiological sensory nerve action potential (SNAP): initial sensory res
