Seoul Virus in Pet and Feeder Rats in The Netherlands.

Seoul virus (SEOV) is a zoonotic orthohantavirus carried by rats. In humans, SEOV can cause hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome. Recent human SEOV cases described in the USA, United Kingdom, France and the Netherlands were associated with contact with pet or feeder rats. The prevalence of SEOV in these types of rats is unknown. We collected 175 pet and feeder rats (Rattus norvegicus) from private owners, ratteries and commercial breeders/traders in the Netherlands. Lung tissue of the rats was tested using a SEOV real-time RT-qPCR and heart fluid was tested for the presence of antibodies agai

Urine-associated horizontal transmission of Seoul virus among rats.

To understand the mode of transmission of Seoul type hantavirus in Wistar rats, we examined the shedding of the virus and antibody production in infected rats. When 1-day-old rats were inoculated with the KI-83-262 strain of Seoul virus, S segment of the viral genome was detected in lungs, clots, urine, saliva, submaxillary glands, rectums, and kidneys by nested reverse transcriptase PCR. On the other hand, when 8-week-old rats were infected with the virus, viral genome was detected only in the lungs and rectum. In newborn rats intranasally administered urine from infected newborn rats, four o

Distribution and Genetic Characteristics of Seoul Virus in Different Organs of Rattus norvegicus.

To investigate the distribution of hantavirus (HV) in rodent organs, we selected eight counties across four regions in Hebei Province (southern, northern, eastern, and central) as study areas. Rodents were captured using night trapping methods, and organ samples were aseptically collected for HV detection via quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) and gene sequencing. During the 2022-2023 spring and autumn seasons, 1386 rodents were trapped, including 73 Rattus norvegicus carrying Seoul virus (SEOV). The highest detection rate was observed in the liver (3.84%), followed by the kidneys (3.46%) and l

Genetic diversity and molecular evolution of Seoul virus in Hebei province, China.

Seoul virus (SEOV) is a major pathogen which causes hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), and is present all over the world. However, there are currently few long-term systematic studies of SEOV's phylogenetic and evolutionary mechanisms in epidemic areas. Thus, in this study, we used RT-PCR combined with NGS to obtain the genomes of six SEOV viruses from 1993, as well as 56 Hebei province-specific tissue samples from 1999 to 2022. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the SEOV samples could be divided into seven groups and showed geographic clustering. The geographic region may be the mai

Genomic characterization of Seoul virus from Rattus norvegicus in Buenos Aires city, Argentina.

The complete genomic characterization of two Seoul virus (SEOV) strains of Rattus norvegicus captured in Buenos Aires City in 1983 and 2001 is reported for the first time. The nucleotide and amino acid identities observed between the Argentinian SEOV strains for the coding regions of the S, M, and L segments and their deduced amino acid sequences were similar to those observed between Argentinian SEOV strains and those from other parts of the world. Phylogenetic analyses using the maximum-likelihood method show that the two Argentinian SEOV strains grouped with other strains from Asia, Europe,

Detection and genetic characterization of Seoul virus from commensal brown rats in France.

BACKGROUND: Hantaviruses are single-stranded RNA viruses, which are transmitted to humans primarily via inhalation of aerosolised virus in contaminated rodent urine and faeces. Whilst infected reservoir hosts are asymptomatic, human infections can lead to two clinical manifestations, haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS), with varying degrees of clinical severity. The incidence of rodent and human cases of Seoul virus (SEOV) in Europe has been considered to be low, and speculated to be driven by the sporadic introduction of infected brown

Hepatitis A virus strains identified in jogaejeot associated with outbreaks in Seoul, South Korea.

Jogaejeot, seasoned Venerupis philippinarum, is a traditional Korean fermented food, and hepatitis A virus (HAV) can be transmitted through contaminated food, especially bivalve shellfish, causing acute gastroenteritis worldwide. Here, we carried out a phylogenetic analysis to identify and characterize HAV strains in jogaejeot samples associated with hepatitis A (HA) outbreaks in Seoul, South Korea, in 2019. The HAV strains were identified using blast and molecular analysis of the amplified HAV VP1-P2B genome region. The HAV strains identified in the five jogaejeot samples shared at least 99%

Comparison of Three Detection Methods for Seoul Virus Causing Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Seoul virus (SEOV) is a significant causative pathogen of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS). Accurate discrimination of SEOV infection from other viral or bacterial infections holds vital clinical importance. METHODS: Our study utilized quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR), metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS), and immunological assays to identify the pathogen causing HFRS. RESULTS: For the case, mNGS identified SEOV and suspected host or environmental microorganisms at 5 days from symptom onset. qRT-PCR detected SEOV between 5 to 8 days from symptom onset. An

Clinical and epidemiological comparison of human metapneumovirus and respiratory syncytial virus in seoul, Korea, 2003-2008.

Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) shares clinical and epidemiological characteristics with well-known respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical and epidemiological differences between HMPV- and RSV-induced wheezing illnesses. A total of 1,008 nasopharyngeal aspirate specimens was collected from 1,008 pediatric patients hospitalized with acute respiratory tract infection at Inje University Sanggye Paik Hospital from December 2003 to April 2008, and tested for seven common respiratory viruses. Conditions classified as wheezing illness were bronchiolitis,

Molecular characterization of hepatitis A virus isolated from acute gastroenteritis patients in the Seoul region of Korea.

Hepatitis A virus (HAV) is a major public health problem throughout the world. As a result of declining HAV endemic in Korea, an increasing number of children and adolescents have become susceptible to HAV infection. HAV is related with sanitation conditions of the environment and is transmitted via the fecal-oral route, either through person-to-person contact or by contaminated water and food. The present study has been carried out to determine the phylogenetic analysis and circulating patterns of HAV strains detected from hospitalized patients with acute gastroenteritis (AGE) in the Seoul re

Seoul Virus Infection and Subsequent Guillain-Barré Syndrome in Traveler Returning to France from Kenya, 2022.

Seoul virus (SEOV) is a worldwide ratborne orthohantavirus. We describe an SEOV infection in an adult returning to France from Kenya, followed by Guillain-Barré syndrome. We confirmed SEOV infection by PCR and sequencing. Although transmission might have occurred in Kenya, the epidemiologic information available is not sufficient to confirm that possibility.

Rare case of intracranial hemorrhage associated with seoul virus infection diagnosed by metagenomic next-generation sequencing.

BACKGROUND: Seoul virus (SEOV) is a Hantavirus and the causative pathogen of Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS). Diagnosing SEOV infection is difficult because the clinical presentations are often undistinguishable from other viral or bacterial infections. In addition, diagnostic tools including serological and molecular assays are not readily available in the clinical settings. CASE REPORT: A 57-year-old male presented with fever and a sudden loss of consciousness in November 2019. Computed tomography (CT) scan showed subdural hematoma, subfalcine herniation, and brain infarction.

Detection of Seoul virus in wild brown rats (Rattus norvegicus) from pig farms in Northern England.

INTRODUCTION: Hantaviruses are maintained by mammalian hosts, such as rodents, and are shed in their excretions. Clinical disease can occur in humans from spillover infection. Brown rats (Rattus norvegicus) are the globally distributed reservoir host of Seoul virus (SEOV). Human cases of SEOV-associated haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (SEOV-HFRS)have been reported in Great Britain (GB) since 1977. METHODS: Brown rats (n=68) were trapped from a variety of peridomestic locations, with a focus on pig farms. Kidney and lung tissues were tested for viral RNA using a pan-hantavirus RT-PCR as
