Effect of aging on manipulative behavior in the cuttlefish, sepia.

The cuttlefish is an active predator that is able to catch crabs of a size that is large relative to its own. The capture is followed by a complex manipulative behavior leading to paralysis of the prey by injection of a cephalotoxin. This manipulative behavior is relatively stereotyped, and earlier research has shown that the cuttlefish concentrates its bite on the articular basi-ischiocoxopodite membrane of the crab's fifth pair of pereiopods. By placing mechanical constraints on the base of the fifth pereiopods, we were able to demonstrate that this manipulative behavior presents a marked de

Microplastics presence in cultured and wild-caught cuttlefish, Sepia officinalis.

Amongst cephalopods microplastics have been reported only in jumbo squid gut. We investigated microplastics in the digestive system of wild cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) as they are predators and prey and compared the stomach, caecum/intestine and digestive gland (DG) of wild and cultured animals, exposed to seawater from a comparable source. Fibers were the most common type (≈90% of total count) but were ≈2× higher in relation to body weight in wild vs. cultured animals. Fibers were transported to the DG where the count was ≈2× higher /g in wild (median 1.85 fibers/g) vs. cultured. In wild-c

Visual Stimuli for the Induction of Hunting Behavior in Cuttlefish Sepia pharaonis.

Cuttlefish exhibit typical hunting behavior, including elongating tentacles against specific prey such as prawn and mysid shrimp. Cuttlefish hunting behavior involves three different actions: attention, positioning, and seizure. Hunting behavior is innate and stereotypic behavior, and it is present in newly hatched juveniles. Factors associated with prey are known to induce this behavior, similar to the sign stimulus, whereby young herring chicks imitate pecking behavior against a red dot on their parent's bill. Although the hunting behavior of cuttlefish has been described and used as an indi

Ultrasound-mediated modification of biological properties of Sepia esculenta ink polysaccharide SIP4.

Ultrasonication is increasingly used as an eco-friendly method to depolymerize natural polysaccharides for improving physicochemical properties and bioactivities of the native macromolecules. However, a systematic evaluation is required to determine how degradation-induced alterations in polysaccharide molecular properties modulate their biological functions. To this end, this study focuses on SIP4, a bioactive sulfated glycosaminoglycan from Sepia esculenta ink, to clarify the physicochemical changes caused by ultrasonic depolymerization and evaluate their subsequent impact on biological acti

Visual contrast modulates maturation of camouflage body patterning in cuttlefish (Sepia pharaonis).

Camouflage is the primary defense behavior in cephalopods. It is known that cuttlefish immediately after hatching are capable of showing various body patterns for concealing themselves, however recent studies suggest that maturation of camouflage body patterns is faster for cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) reared in enriched environments than those reared in impoverished environments. Since camouflage patterning in cephalopods is predominately visually driven, this study specifically investigates effects of the rearing background contrast on the maturation of body patterns in cuttlefish (Sepia p

Continuous Inking Affects the Biological and Biochemical Responses of Cuttlefish Sepia pharaonis.

Several marine mollusks, including cephalopods (cuttlefish, squid, and octopus) and gastropods (e.g., sea hares), can release a colored ink secretion when chased by predators or stimulated. Ink release is part of a defensive response, but the threshold for the biochemical responses caused by stimulation is unknown. The present study aimed to reveal antipredator responses of cuttlefish, such as escaping via inking and/or jetting, and to investigate its biological and biochemical responses to continuous ink release. Results showed that the behavioral responses to continuous ink release mainly ma

Cyclic nature of the REM sleep-like state in the cuttlefish Sepia officinalis.

Sleep is a state of immobility characterized by three key criteria: an increased threshold of arousal, rapid reversal to an alert state and evidence of homeostatic 'rebound sleep' in which there is an increase in the time spent in this quiescent state following sleep deprivation. Common European cuttlefish, Sepia officinalis, show states of quiescence during which they meet the last two of these three criteria, yet also show spontaneous bursts of arm and eye movements that accompany rapid changes in chromatophore patterns in the skin. Here, we report that this rapid eye movement sleep-like (RE

Cholinergic mechanisms in the neurocontrol of the branchial heart of the cephalopod Sepia officinalis L.

Cholinergic mechanisms controlling the branchial heart of the cephalopod Sepia officinalis L. were examined. In vitro tests indicate that acetylcholine (ACh) exerts a dose-dependent negative inotropic and chronotropic effect. Although the nicotinic agonists carbachol and nicotine mimic the effects of ACh closely, the muscarinic agonists pilocarpine, muscarine and oxotremorine induce only a slight inhibition of amplitude and frequency. Other agents tested (including atropine, pirencepine, hexamethonium, tetraethylammonium (TEA), d-tubocurarine and alpha-bungarotoxin) confirm that the acetylchol

Regulating Sepia melanin agglomerates using tailored kaolinite to accelerate skin wound healing.

Uncontrolled hemorrhage and wound healing difficulties are significant challenges in medical care. Wounds that fail to close within a limited time frame are often associated with continuous hemorrhage, hard-to-treat infections, and chronic conditions. Sepia melanin that contains eumelanin and is extracted from the ink of cuttlefish Sepia officinalis exists as agglomerates in the natural state, and it can be disassembled using kaolinite (D-SM-Kaolin) to accelerate hemostasis and wound healing. D-SM-Kaolin fabrication using Sepia melanin cross-linked with kaolinite through dissolving, disassembl

Effects of chitin and sepia ink hybrid hemostatic sponge on the blood parameters of mice.

Chitin and sepia ink hybrid hemostatic sponge (CTSH sponge), a new biomedical material, was extensively studied for its beneficial biological properties of hemostasis and stimulation of healing. However, studies examining the safety of CTSH sponge in the blood system are lacking. This experiment aimed to examine whether CTSH sponge has negative effect on blood systems of mice, which were treated with a dosage of CTSH sponge (135 mg/kg) through a laparotomy. CTSH sponge was implanted into the abdominal subcutaneous and a laparotomy was used for blood sampling from abdominal aortic. Several kinds

Epidemiology of invasive aspergillosis and azole resistance in patients with acute leukaemia: the SEPIA Study.

Invasive aspergillosis (IA) is a serious hazard to high-risk haematological patients. There are increasing reports of azole-resistant Aspergillus spp. This study assessed the epidemiology of IA and azole-resistant Aspergillus spp. in patients with acute leukaemia in Germany. A prospective multicentre cohort study was performed in German haematology/oncology centres. The incidence of probable and proven aspergillosis according to the revised EORTC/MSG criteria was assessed for all patients with acute leukaemia [acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) and acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL)]. Cases were d

Characterization of Dopamine Receptors in Sepia officinalis (Cephalopoda): An Insight Into the Evolution of Dopamine Receptors in Bilateria.

Dopamine is present in all metazoans but signaling pathways and receptors characteristics have been studied mainly in vertebrates. We addressed this issue by studying dopamine receptors in cephalopods (Sepia officinalis), a clade well-known for its visual and cognitive behavior and its production of various neurotransmitters. For the first time, we have phylogenetically identified three distinct families of dopamine receptors in Sepia embryos, belonging to the D1-like, D2-like and "invertebrate-type dopamine receptors" (INDR). We confirm that the family of INDR is not specific to Ecdysozoans a

Allozyme differentiation in the cuttlefish Sepia officinalis (Mollusca: cephalopoda) from the NE Atlantic and Mediterranean.

The Atlantic-Mediterranean area has recently been proposed as a new phylogeographical area on the basis of concordance of genetic differentiation patterns observed in several marine species. However, additional taxa need to be studied to establish the phylogeographical relationship between the Atlantic and Mediterranean. Eleven samples of the cuttlefish Sepia officinalis around the Iberian Peninsula, one from the Canary Islands, and another from Fiumicino (Italy) were screened for 33 allozyme loci. Genetic variability was low in all samples (He between 0.022 and 0. 076). Intersample genetic di

Using Sepia melanin as a PD model to describe the binding characteristics of neuromelanin - A critical review.

Parkinson's disease is characterised pathologically by a relatively selective death of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra of the brain. The vulnerability of these neurons appears to be linked to the pigment neuromelanin. However, as yet there is limited understanding behind the mechanisms of this disease process. Complications arise due to the difficulty in obtaining appreciable quantities of neuromelanin. Furthermore, an appropriate model for studying neuromelanin has not been identified. To date there has been many studies looking at the binding and chemical characteristics of neur

Integrative Multi-Omics Analysis Reveals the Immunoregulatory Effects of Sepia Ink on ADHD-like Phenotypes.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), affecting 5-10% of children globally, faces treatment limitations due to adverse effects and uncertain long-term risks of current pharmacotherapies. This study investigated the therapeutic potential of sepia ink (SI), a marine-derived natural complex from cuttlefish, in a scopolamine-induced ADHD-like mouse model. The chemical constituents of SI were characterized via Ultra-Performance Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (UPLC-MS). The behavioral assessments, histopathological examinations, flow cytometry, and complete blood counts were util

Protective effect of chitosan from Sepia kobiensis (Hoyle 1885) cuttlebone against CCl4 induced hepatic injury.

Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) is a potent hepatotoxic agent causing hepatic necrosis and it is widely used in animal models for induction of acute and chronic liver damage. The antioxidative and hepatoprotective effects of chitosan from Sepia kobiensis against CCl4 induced liver toxicity in Wistar rats was studied by measuring the activity of lipid peroxidation (TBARS, lipid hydroperoxides), non enzymatic antioxidant (GSH), antioxidant enzyme activities (SOD, CAT and GPx), liver marker enzymes (ALT and AST), lipid profile (FFA, TG, cholesterol and HDL cholesterol) and histopathological changes.

Antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities of flavonoid and phenolics extracted from Sepia pharaonis ink (Mollusca: Cephalopoda).

BACKGROUND: Several studies have been reported previously on the bioactivities of different extracts of marine molluscs. Therefore, we decided to evaluate the cytotoxic and antimicrobial activities of S. pharaonis ink as a highly populated species in the Red Sea. We extracted the flavonoids from the ink and analyzed their composition. Then we evaluated systematically the cytotoxic and antimicrobial properties of this extract. A pharmacokinetic study was also conducted using SwissADME to assess the potential of the identified flavonoids and phenolic compounds from the ink extract to be orally a

Preparation of Phosphorylated Chitosan From the Cuttlebone of Sepia pharaonis and the Effect of Concentration on Oral Clinical Pathogens.

BACKGROUND: Chitosan, a biopolymer derived from chitin, has attracted scholarly interest because of its antibacterial, biocompatible, and biodegradable characteristics. We can phosphorylate the cuttlebone of Sepia pharaonis, a natural source of chitin, to enhance its antimicrobial properties. Phosphorylated chitosan is promising for treating oral infections, which are the causative agents of a variety of dental disorders. OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study is to look into how to make phosphorylated chitosan from cuttlebone and what effect different concentrations have on killing oral clinical

Bioaccumulation of inorganic and organic mercury in the cuttlefish Sepia officinalis: Influence of ocean acidification and food type.

The bioaccumulation of mercury (Hg) in marine organisms through various pathways has not yet been fully explored, particularly in cephalopods. This study utilises radiotracer techniques using the isotope 203Hg to investigate the toxicokinetics and the organotropism of waterborne inorganic Hg (iHg) and dietary inorganic and organic Hg (methylHg, MeHg) in juvenile common cuttlefish Sepia officinalis. The effect of two contrasting CO2 partial pressures in seawater (400 and 1600 μatm, equivalent to pH 8.08 and 7.54, respectively) and two types of prey (fish and shrimp) were tested as potential dri
