Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) is a diffuse brain dysfunction that occurs secondary to infection in the body without overt CNS infection. SAE is frequently encountered in critically ill patients in intensive care units, and in up to 70% of patients with severe systemic infection. The severity of SAE can range from mild delirium to deep coma. Seizures and myoclonus are infrequent and cranial nerves are almost always spared, but most severe cases have an associated critical illness neuromyopathy. Development of SAE probably involves a number of mechanisms that are not mutually exclusive

The sepsis associated encephalopathy (SAE) is a common cause of delirium, accompanied by hyperthermia or not. It is defined as a diffuse cerebral dysfunction induced by the systemic response to the infection without clinical or laboratory evidence of direct infectious involvement of the central nervous system. It is, thus, a diagnosis of exclusion. The pathogenic mechanisms underlying SAE are now better understood: it involves, at least, an intense inflammation of the central nervous system and a major impairment of the blood brain barrier. At the present time, clinical, biological and radiolo

A diffuse cerebral dysfunction is often present in sepsis and may ensues even before signs of other organ failure. It is better defined as ''Sepsis Associated Encephalopathy'' (SAE), in order to stress the absence of direct infection of the central nervous system. The main sign of SAE is an altered mental status. Electroencephalography is the more sensitive diagnostic test, and allows the grading of the severity of cerebral dysfunction that is related to outcome. SAE is potentially reversible, but it always worsens the prognosis. Pathophysiology of SAE is not still completely understood, and i

Sepsis-associated encephalopathy is a common but neglected clinical symptom of systemic inflammatory reaction in the early phase. The clinical spectrum of diffuse cerebral dysfunction induced by systemic sepsis--sepsis-associated encephalopathy according to the new terms--varies from transient, reversible encephalopathy, to severe irreversible brain damage. The aim of the present publication is to summarize the pathophysiology, frequent symptoms and possible treatments of the disease based on international and Hungarian articles on this topic. We want to emphasize the importance of monitoring

INTRODUCTION: Alteration of sensorium or an encephalopathy is a common diagnostic dilemma in critically ill patients and can be caused by a number of conditions. Sepsis associated encephalopathy (SAE) is now the most common encephalopathy encountered among intensive care unit (ICU) patients.
DEFINITIONS: SAE is an encephalopathy attributed primarily to sepsis or systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and has often been a diagnosis of exclusion.
CONCLUSION: It is important to recognize SAE for its therapeutic and prognostic aspects. SAE worsens morbidity and mortality among ICU patien

Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) is a diffuse brain dysfunction due to a systemic response to infection. We report the case of a 4-year-old girl with fever and vomiting for 48h, brought to the university hospital of Grenoble because of vigilance disorders, loss of verbal fluency, and a cerebellar syndrome. She had a biological infectious syndrome. Infectious encephalitis was suggested first, but the cerebral scan and the lumbar punction were normal. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a diffuse brain edema with extended involvement of cortical and basal ganglia. The electroencephalog

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVE: Sepsis-Associated Encephalopathy (SAE) represents a lifethreatening complication of sepsis, whose pathogenesis is driven by intestinal dysbiosis through bidirectional gut-brain axis signaling. Resveratrol, a neuroprotective natural polyphenol, exerts anti-SAE effects in a microbiota-dependent manner; nevertheless, existing mechanistic evidence has not been systematically integrated. This review comprehensively summarizes its multitiered protective signaling cascades centered on gut-brain crosstalk.
METHODS: We systematically retrieved relevant literature published betw

Sepsis is often complicated by an acute and reversible deterioration of mental status, which is associated with increased mortality and is consistent with delirium but can also be revealed by a focal neurologic sign. Sepsis-associated encephalopathy is accompanied by abnormalities of electroencephalogram and somatosensory-evoked potentials, increased in biomarkers of brain injury (i.e., neuron-specific enolase, S-100 beta-protein) and, frequently, by neuroradiological abnormalities, notably leukoencephalopathy. Its mechanism is highly complex, resulting from both inflammatory and noninflammato

Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) represents a prevalent and serious complication in patients with sepsis, contributing to substantial cognitive dysfunction and persistent neurological deficits. The cerebral clearance mechanism, consisting of the glymphatic system and meningeal lymphatic vessels (MLVs), serves a pivotal function in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) drainage and the elimination of metabolic byproducts. The study demonstrated that intraperitoneal administration of LPS (3 mg/kg) resulted in a reduction in Aβ clearance 28 h post-injection. Moreover, acute exposure to a lower dose of

Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) is one of the most common types of organ dysfunction without overt central nervous system (CNS) infection. It is associated with higher mortality, low quality of life, and long-term neurological sequelae, its mortality in patients diagnosed with sepsis, progressing to SAE, is 9% to 76%. The pathophysiology of SAE is still unknown, but its mechanisms are well elaborated, including oxidative stress, increased cytokines and proinflammatory factors levels, disturbances in the cerebral circulation, changes in blood-brain barrier permeability, injury to the bra

Sepsis-associated encephalopathy, which presents as delirium and coma, is a significant complication of sepsis characterized by acute brain dysfunction. The presence of inflammatory pathological changes in the brain of sepsis patients and animal models has been recognized since the 1920 s, initially attributed to the entry of microbial toxins into the brain. In the early 2000 s, attention shifted towards the impact of oxidative stress, the cholinergic system, and cytokines on brain function following sepsis onset. More recently, sepsis-associated encephalopathy has been defined as a diffuse br

Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) refers to a clinical spectrum of acute neurological dysfunction that arises in the context of sepsis. Although the pathophysiology of SAE is incompletely understood, it is thought to involve endothelial activation, blood-brain barrier leakage, inflammatory cell migration, and neuronal loss with neurotransmitter imbalance. SAE is associated with a high risk of mortality. Imaging studies using MRI and CT have demonstrated changes in the brains of patients with SAE that are also seen in disorders such as stroke. Next-generation imaging techniques such as mag

BACKGROUND: Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) is frequently encountered in sepsis and is often accompanied by neuroimaging findings indicating ischemia, hemorrhage, and edema. Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) has been vastly underrecognized in previously reported cohorts of patients with sepsis and SAE. Our aim was to determine the prevalence and distinguishing clinical, neuroimaging, and electroencephalography features of PRES in SAE.
METHODS: In this prospective observational study, patients with radiologically identified PRES were selected from a consecutively enrol

Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) is defined as a syndrome of cerebral dysfunction secondary to sepsis but in the absence of direct central nervous system infection, structural abnormality, or other types of encephalopathy. The majority of clinical studies indicated that the severity and duration of SAE were highly related to the days of ICU stays, medical costs, and mortality of sepsis. Meanwhile, the persistence of cognitive impairments and psychological diseases in a majority of survived septic patients brings a heavy burden on those individuals and society. However, the pathogenesis o

Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) is a neurological dysfunction induced by sepsis, with symptoms ranging from mild delirium to deep coma. About 70% of patients with severe systemic infection develop SAE and with more than half of surviving patients suffering from long-term cognitive deficits, which seriously damaged the quality of their daily life and brought a heavy burden to society. The pathogenesis of SAE is multifactorial, including activated inflammation, blood- brain barrier (BBB) disruption, cerebral blood flow impairment, and neurotransmitter disturbances. Microglia mediate multi

Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) is a condition characterized by acute brain dysfunction developed in the absence of a primary infection in the central nervous system. The aim of this study was to perform a pilot, untargeted metabolomic profiling of the blood plasma of SAE patients to identify metabolic changes potentially associated with the pathological condition and to generate hypotheses for further studies of its pathogenesis, as well as to the search for promising biomarkers, and the assessment of the severity of the patient's condition. Metabolomic profiling was performed using HP

Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) is a frequent neurological complication of sepsis, driven by six interconnected pathophysiological components: (1) systemic inflammation-triggered neuroinflammatory cascades, initiated by systemic recognition of pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) and damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) and propagated by pro-inflammatory mediators; (2) central nervous system (CNS) immune cell-mediated neuroinflammation, wherein microglia, regulatory T cells, and neutrophils dynamically regulate inflammatory progression; (3) blood-brain barrier (BBB) di

Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) is a critical consequence of sepsis, marked by elevated morbidity and fatality rates. An unbalanced inflammatory response is a significant pathogenic mechanism. The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is an essential element of the central nervous system (CNS). Sepsis can impact the BBB and neural networks in multiple ways, especially via microglia, astrocytes, and neurons. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) can participate in the development of various diseases by modulating inflammatory responses, cellular metabolism, and immune cell functions. They not only impact t
