As yet, a valid tissue characterization of human breast diseases has not been possible with conventional MR techniques. On the basis of the experimental thesis according to which fibroadenomas and carcinomas have a slight, though significant, difference in T1 relaxation times, we employed specific inversion recovery sequences at the T null of the breast glandular and adipose tissues, to enhance the differences in the signal intensities of the various pathologies. We examined 16 (6 cystic dysplasias, 5 fibroadenomas, 3 carcinomas, and 1 phylloid fibroadenoma) selected patients with the above-me

BACKGROUND: T1-weighted 3D turbo spin echo (T1W-3D-TSE) sequences with variable refocusing flip angle are commonly used to diagnose intracranial vertebrobasilar artery dissection (iVAD). However, magnetic susceptibility artifacts of the cavernous sinus may cause loss of the basilar and vertebral arteries. This study investigated the effectiveness of a 3D phase-sensitive inversion recovery (3D-PSIR) sequence in reducing magnetic susceptibility artifacts in the cavernous sinus, and its imaging findings for iVAD.
METHODS: Twelve volunteers and eleven patients with iVAD were included. Magnetic re

Two complementary series of novel tryptophan-derived dipeptides (Trp-X and X-Trp) were designed and synthesized to systematically evaluate how backbone sequence inversion alters chemical accessibility and in vitro antineoplastic profiles against a human solid tumor cell line panel (A549, HeLa, MIA PaCa-2, SW1573, T-47D, and WiDr). Reversing the peptide connectivity revealed prominent sequence-dependent chemical reactivities and biological variations. Steric repulsion at the β-carbon limited basic hydrolysis during X-Trp precursor assembly, whereas the Trp-X series allowed straightforward chemi

This study was aimed at correlating the yield of a three-dimensional (3D) inversion-recovery (IR) turbo spin-echo MR cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) sequence with that of ERCP and PTC in the imaging of the normal and abnormal biliopancreatic tract. Thirty patients with suspected biliary and pancreatic diseases were examined with MRCP first and then with ERCP or PTC; they were also submitted to US, CT and conventional MR studies and in 5 of them CT cholangiography was also performed. Five patients were normal and 25 had various obstructive abnormalities: 5 patients had gallbladder stones, 8 com

PURPOSE: We evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively the usefulness of turbo-FLAIR (tFLAIR) in diagnosing meningioma in comparison with the T2-weighted turbo spin echo (T2W-TSE) sequence.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-eight patients diagnosed with meningioma were studied. In the qualitative study, we evaluated tumor delineation, contrast (Co) of tumor-to-CSF (cerebrospinal fluid), Co of tumor-to-brain parenchyma, Co of peripheral edema-to-brain parenchyma, and detectability of tumor margin. In quantitative study-1, using signal intensity (SI), we measured SI and calculated Co-SI of tumor-to-

OBJECTIVE: Late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) patterns of cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) relying on PSIR (phase-sensitive inversion recovery sequence) techniques had been used to determine the characteristics of LGE in apical hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (ApHCM).
METHODS: Forty patients pure ApHCM [age, (60.2±10.4) years, 31 men] were enrolled. LGE images were acquired using PSIR, and analyzed using a 17-segment model. Summing the LGE areas in all short axis slices yielded the total volume of late enhancement, which was subsequently presented as a proportion of total LV myocardium (% L

To evaluate the application of Fluid-Attenuated Inversion Recovery (FLAIR) pulse sequence to increase the sensitivity of detecting tubers in tuberous sclerosis patients compared with fast spin-echo T2-weighted (FSET2W) image, we obtained 12 magnetic resonance (MR) images in 10 patients (mean age = 57.7 months old). Among the 12 examinations, 114 cortical and 128 subcortical tubers were revealed on the FLAIR images, whereas 54 and 72 tubers were found respectively on the FSET2W images. This may be due to the FLAIR pulse sequences remarkably attenuated CSF signals in comparison with the FSET2W i

The acronym FLAIR refers to fluid attenuation inversion recovery sequences, which are T2-weighted MR pulse sequences with liquor signal saturation by a long TI. They are characterized by long TR and TE and therefore the acquisition time is very long in the conventional mode, while fast imaging (the Turbo mode) reduces acquisition time to less than 2 minutes. Our study was aimed at codifying the use of this type of sequence in neuroradiologic studies. All the exams were performed with an MR unit with a 1-Tesla magnetic field. We carried out 150 neuroradiologic exams with this pulse sequence on

OBJECTIVE: Fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) vascular hyperintensities (FVH), initially described on 2D FLAIR images, are a useful imaging marker in patients with acute ischaemic stroke. We aimed to compare the sensitivity of the 3D CUBE FLAIR sequence with 2D FLAIR for the detection of FVH.
METHODS: Forty-seven consecutive patients admitted for a suspected stroke were explored by 2D and 3D CUBE FLAIR MR sequences at 1.5 and 3 T. Three blinded readers assessed FVH defined as hyperintensities within cerebral arteries. Location of FVH, acute brain infarct and arterial stenosis were al

Fluid-attenuated inversion recovery imaging (=flair imaging) is widely used as primary screening sequence in various investigation protocols, due to its high lesion contrast and sensitivity in detection of parenchymatous and leptomeningeal disease. An additional increase of sensitivity for detection of lesions may be achieved by contrast-enhanced flair imaging. Based on flair imaging a dual-echo inversion recovery imaging sequence (=proton echo usage [=protoneus] - sequence) was developed, which could significantly extend the possibilities of conventional flair imaging.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Minimally invasive neurosurgery requires methods to specify surgical boundaries of target tissue, such as brain tumors. This study investigated technical possibilities and clinical usefulness of adapting edema attenuated inversion recovery (EDAIR) pulse sequences to suppress magnetic resonance signal from cerebral edema in brain tumor patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A resistive 0.23-T magnetic resonance scanner with magnitude-encoded inversion recovery sequences was used. Twenty-eight separate scanning tests in 25 neurosurgical brain tumor patients were performed on

The objective of this study was to assess the diagnostic value of magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) at 0.5 T. The MRCP technique was performed in 28 patients with symptomatology referrable to the biliary system. A three-dimensional (3D) inversion recovery turbo-spin-echo (TSE) sequence was used to create 3D reconstructions of the bile ducts. Dilation of the biliary tree or pancreatic duct in 23 patients due to tumor, calculi, or strictures was depicted with excellent contrast resolution. The approximate level of obstruction and all calculi were accurately predicted by MRCP. In

BACKGROUND: Dystrophinopathies caused by variants in the DMD gene are a well-studied muscle disease. The most common type of variant in DMD are large deletions. Very rarely reported forms of variants are chromosomal translocations, inversions and deep intronic variants (DIVs) because they are not detectable by standard diagnostic techniques (sequencing of coding sequence, copy number variant detection). This might be the reason that some clinically and histologically proven dystrophinopathy cases remain unsolved.
METHODS: We used whole genome sequencing (WGS) to screen the entire DMD gene for

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: MR imaging plays an important role in diagnosing MS and other related inflammatory diseases; however, imaging of the spinal cord is still challenging. We hypothesized that a 3D double inversion recovery sequence for cervical spinal cord imaging would be more sensitive in detecting inflammatory lesions than a conventional 2D T2-weighted TSE sequence at 3T.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: On a 3T MR imaging scanner, we examined 30 patients with suspected or established MS (MS, n = 16; clinically isolated syndrome, n = 12; isolated myelitis, n = 2) and 10 healthy controls. Newly d

In this paper, we propose to create a rich database of synthetic time series of 3D echocardiography (US) images using simulations of a cardiac electromechanical model, in order to study the relationship between electrical disorders and kinematic patterns visible in medical images. From a real 4D sequence, a software pipeline is applied to create several synthetic sequences by combining various steps including motion tracking and segmentation. We use here this synthetic database to train a machine learning algorithm which estimates the depolarization times of each cardiac segment from invariant
