Antimicrobial Treatment of Serratia marcescens Invasive Infections: Systematic Review.

Background: Serratia marcescens (SM) is a Gram-negative pathogen discovered by Italian pharmacist, Bizio, in 1819. According to the literature, S. marcescens is resistant to a wide range of antibiotics, including penicillin, cephalosporin, tetracycline, macrolide, nitrofurantoin, and colistin. We conducted a systematic review of published reports, determined what invasive infections could cause SM, and established the most appropriate antibiotic therapy. Methods: We registered this systematic review on the PROSPERO registry of systematic reviews-meta-analyses before we started our research (re

Serratia marcescens Infections in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs).

Serratia marcescens belongs to the family Enterobacteriaceae, which is commonly found in water, soil, animals, insects, plants. Although S. marcescens displays relatively low virulence, it causes nosocomial infections and outbreaks in severely immunocompromised or critically ill patients, particularly in settings such as intensive care units (ICUs), especially neonatal units (NICUs). This microorganism gives rise to a wide range of clinical manifestations in newborns: from asymptomatic colonization to keratitis, conjunctivitis, urinary tract infections, pneumonia, surgical wound infections, se

Serratia infections in a general hospital: characteristics and outcomes.

We aimed to present our experience regarding infections caused by Serratia spp. in a region with relatively high antimicrobial resistance rates. We retrospectively reviewed the databases of the microbiological laboratory of the University Hospital of Heraklion, Crete (2/2004-12/2009). A total of 77 patients [67.5% men, mean age ± standard deviation (SD) = 56.9 ± 24.5 years) were identified; 37.7% were outpatients. Sixty-five (84.4%) of the 77 included patients had a Serratia marcescens isolate; the remaining 12 patients had a non-marcescens Serratia spp. The most frequently observed infections

Infection of the hip joint by Serratia marcescens.

A 72-year-old male patient presented to the hospital because of sudden inability to bear weight and without a history of trauma. A fracture of the head of the femur was identified on CT scan of the pelvis. In his history, the patient had a hospital admission 3 months earlier, during which he had a urinary catheter, and a urine specimen was analysed. The same pathogen was found in the patient urine and in the head of the femur specimen. This is a report of blood-borne spread of Serratia marcescens infection from the urothelium to the hip joint, responsible for spontaneous fracture of the femora

Serratia marcescens causing recurrent superficial skin infections in an immunosuppressed patient.

Serratia marcescens is a gram-negative bacterium found commonly in water and soil. Initially thought to be non-pathogenic, it is now recognised as an important cause of nosocomial and opportunistic infections. Skin infections are rare, but cases of S. marcescens causing ulcers, abscesses and necrotizing fasciitis have been reported. We report an unusual cutaneous presentation of S. marcescens in an immunosuppressed patient. A 77-year-old man under review for non-melanoma skin cancer in the context of a previous cardiac transplant, presented with an asymptomatic scalp eruption. Immunosuppressiv

Cutaneous Serratia marcescens infection in two dogs.

We describe two canine cases of cutaneous infection caused by Serratia marcescens. A 2-year-old castrated male mixed dog (Case 1) presented with multiple ulcerations on the dorsal trunk, which were observed 4 days after shampooing. A 4-year-old male wolf shepherd mix dog (Case 2) presented with ulceration and purulent discharge on the nasal bridge. Cytological examination of both cases revealed pyogranulomatous inflammatory cells with rod-like infectious agents identified as S. marcescens in aerobic bacterial culture. Both patients were treated with oral antibiotics and topical chlorhexidine.

Infective endocarditis by Serratia species: a systematic review.

Serratia species are facultative anaerobes, non-spore-forming, motile Gram-negative bacteria. Serratia spp. are currently thought to cause a variety of infections, such as bacteremia, urinary tract infections, and pneumonia, as well as other, less common infections, including ocular infections or skin and soft tissue infections. On the other hand, Infective Endocarditis (IE) is an infrequent disease with notable morbidity and mortality. Even though IE is rarely caused by Serratia spp., these infections can be quite problematic due to the lack of experience in their management. This study aimed

Cutaneous Serratia marcescens infections in Korea: A retrospective analysis of 13 patients.

Serratia marcescens is a Gram-negative bacillus belonging to the Enterobacteriaceae family. Because of increasing reports of antimicrobial resistance, this bacterium has received considerable attention and has emerged as an important pathogen. In order to reveal clinical and microbiological characteristics of S. marcescens cutaneous infection and to suggest appropriate antibiotic treatment, we retrospectively analyzed 17 strains isolated from wound swabs of Korean patients between November 2005 and March 2014. A total of 13 patients (five men and eight women) were included in our study, with a

Infection characteristics among Serratia marcescens capsule lineages.

UNLABELLED: Serratia marcescens is a healthcare-associated pathogen that can cause severe infections, including bacteremia and pneumonia. The capsule polysaccharide of S. marcescens is a bacteremia fitness determinant, and previous work defined capsule locus (KL) diversity within the species. Strains belonging to KL1 and KL2 capsule clades produce sialylated polysaccharides and represent the largest subpopulation of isolates from clinical origin. In this study, the contribution of these and other S. marcescens capsules to infection was determined in animal and cellular models. Using a murine m

A Rare Presentation of Infective Endocarditis Due to Serratia marcescens.

Serratia marcescens is an opportunistic organism that can commonly cause respiratory tract infections in immunocompromised individuals. It has also been shown to cause urinary tract infections and soft tissue infections. It has several virulence factors including fimbriae-like adhesions that allow for surface attachment and biofilm formation to increase the likelihood of infections in humans. However, it has rarely been shown to cause infective endocarditis but has an increased mortality compared to the usual microbial agents associated with it (Staphylococcus and Streptococcus). Therefore, a

Marvelous but Morbid: Infective endocarditis due to Serratia marcescens.

A 46-year-old man with HIV infection and active intravenous drug use presented with approximately two weeks of fevers and body aches. On physical examination he was somnolent, had a new systolic murmur, bilateral conjunctival hemorrhages, diffuse petechiae, and left-sided arm weakness. Echocardiography revealed a large mitral valve vegetation and brain imaging demonstrated numerous embolic infarctions. Blood cultures grew Serratia marcescens. Despite aggressive treatment with meropenem the patient died due to intracranial hemorrhage complicated by herniation. Serratia marcescens is an uncommon

Localized infection by Serratia marcescens simulating a conjunctival neoplasm.

PURPOSE: To report a Serratia marcescens infection that clinically simulated a conjunctival neoplasm. METHOD: Case report. RESULTS: A healthy 80-year-old man without contact lenses presented with a pink-yellow conjunctival mass that resembled a solid neoplasm. Stains and cultures of material that exuded from the mass during surgery revealed S. marcescens. Histopathology disclosed an epithelial-lined cyst with macrophages containing S. marcescens. CONCLUSION: Although S. marcescens usually affects the eye as a keratoconjunctivitis in patients with contact lenses, it can also present as a mas

An uncommon cause of osteomyelitis: Serratia fonticola A rare pathogen in human infections.

Osteomyelitis is a prevalent orthopedic condition. The most frequently associated pathogens are Staphylococcus aureus, coagulase-negative Staphylococci, and aerobic gram-negative bacilli. The treatment includes the administration of antibiotics targeting the pathogens and possible surgical debridement. Although Serratia fonticola has been isolated in various tissues, including the respiratory, gastrointestinal, urinary, and biliary tracts, as well as in wounds, human infections associated with S. fonticola have rarely been reported. Here, we present an uncommon case of osteomyelitis secondary
