Partite hallux sesamoid bones: Relationship with sesamoid bones at other metatarsophalangeal joints.

Partite hallux sesamoids are clinically meaningful but their association with other sesamoids is not clear. The objective was to relate the prevalence of the partite hallux sesamoid bones to sesamoid bones at other metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joints. We conducted a retrospective review of plain radiographs of 7946 adult feet between November 2005 and September 2012 to identify partite hallux sesamoids and sesamoids at other MTP joints. Coexistence patterns of the partition and extra sesamoids were studied. Presence or absence of sesamoids at other MTP joints as well as sex and laterality were co

Pseudomonas osteomyelitis of the metatarsal sesamoid bones.

It is unusual for osteomyelitis of the sesamoid bones to occur after a puncture wound to the foot. When the puncture occurs through tennis shoes, the risk of Pseudomonas infection is increased. Pseudomonas was the causative organism in 7 of 22 cases reported in the literature. This report will explore the causes and natural history, as well as the treatment, of these infections. Initially, basic wound care principles should be adhered to when treating these wounds. Patient awareness and close follow-up is important to ensure complete healing. Treatment of this case involved intravenous antibio

[Pathology of the sesamoid bones of the hand].

Sesamoid bones are osseous parts of certain joints and can either be included in pathological changes of these joints or separately in those of the sesamoidal joint itself. The clinical relevance of such findings is described in the following examples: Rheumatoid variants, psoriasis, different types of hyperostotic forms, chronic sesamoiditis as well as post-trauma. In three out of four cases of fracture, the ulnar sesamoid bone of the metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb was affected.

Accessory ossicles and sesamoid bones: recognition and treatment.

Accessory ossicles and sesamoid bones are normal variants of bone development. In foot and ankle X-rays these bones can appear similar to, or can obscure, fractures, which makes the X-rays difficult to interpret. This article illustrates and describes some of the more common ossicles and sesamoid bones, and provides a brief description of the management of the patients with foot or ankle pain whose X-rays are inconclusive.

Fractures of the sesamoid bones of the thumb.

Stability of the thumb metacarpophalangeal joint is provided by the collateral ligament proper, the accessory collateral ligament, the proximal and distal palmar ligaments, and the palmar plate. The adductor pollicis and flexor pollicis brevis muscles also provide soft tissue support and insert on the proximal phalanx of the thumb by way of the sesamoid bones. Fractures of the metacarpophalangeal joint sesamoid bones are uncommon but are often associated with sporting injuries during which the joint is acutely hyperextended. Routine anteroposterior and lateral radiographs may be unremarkable,

Painful conditions affecting the first metatarsal sesamoid bones.

The sesamoid bones of the first metatarsal exhibit a special anatomic configuration, enveloped by the tendons of the flexor hallucis brevis and lying within the capsule of the first metatarsophalangeal joint. Painful conditions of the hallux sesamoid bones are many and include congenital, traumatic, arthritic, infectious, and ischemic conditions. Because of the complex anatomy and the numerous pain-sensitive structures in the region of the first metatarsophalangeal joint, a differential diagnosis can be challenging. The imaging examination should always begin with conventional radiography, inc

Training drives turnover rates in racehorse proximal sesamoid bones.

Focal bone lesions are often found prior to clinically relevant stress-fractures. Lesions are characterized by low bone volume fraction, low mineral density, and high levels of microdamage and are hypothesized to develop when bone tissue cannot sufficiently respond to damaging loading. It is difficult to determine how exercise drives the formation of these lesions because bone responds to mechanical loading and repairs damage. In this study, we derive steady-state rate constants for a compartment model of bone turnover using morphometric data from fractured and non-fractured racehorse proximal

Surgical approach for removal of nonarticular base sesamoid fragments of the proximal sesamoid bones in horses.

OBJECTIVES: To describe a surgical approach for the removal of nonarticular base sesamoid fragments in performance horses and to report the outcome. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: Horses (n=11), 7 months to 10 years of age, with lameness because of nonarticular base sesamoid fragments. METHODS: Lameness was localized to the metacarpophalangeal/metatarsophalangeal region by clinical examination or response to diagnostic local anesthesia. Radiographs confirmed the diagnosis of a nonarticular base sesamoid fragment. Surgical removal was performed with an incision over the base of

Distribution patterns and coincidence of sesamoid bones at metatarsophalangeal joints.

PURPOSE: Our aim was to identify the incidence and distribution of sesamoid bones plantar to the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joints in adults, and to evaluate patterns of coincidence among these sesamoid bones. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of 7949 plain radiographs obtained from patients evaluated for foot trauma or symptomology. Associations between the distributions of MTP sesamoid bones as well as the association of age, sex, and laterality with identified prevalence, distribution, and coincidence were evaluated using Spearman's correlation coefficient. RESULTS: Overall, 17,

Prevalence of accessory ossicles and sesamoid bones in hallux valgus.

BACKGROUND: Sesamoid bones and accessory ossicles of the foot and ankle, although mostly asymptomatic, can be sources of pain or degenerative changes in response to overuse and trauma. We investigated the prevalence of accessory ossicles and sesamoid bones in a population of Italian women with hallux valgus. METHODS: A single-center study was performed to determine the prevalence of accessory ossicles and sesamoid bones in the ankle and foot. A total of 505 women with hallux valgus aged 26 to 80 years at the time of hallux valgus correction were examined. Anteroposterior, oblique, lateral foo

[The pisiform bone: sesamoid or carpal bone?].

In man, the pisiform bone occupies an unusual place among the carpal bones. It is situated in an anterior plane to the other bones, sheathed within the tendon of the flexor carpi ulnaris, and ossifying almost four years the last of the carpal bones. Many theories have tried to explain the presence of this "exceptional" bone: the first theory, proposed by Flower and Mivart, suggested the possibility that this bone could be a sesamoid. The second theory supposes a polydactyl hand, assuming that polydactyly preceded pentadactyly; the pisiform would then be a post-minimus vestigial bone according

Common cellular origin and diverging developmental programs for different sesamoid bones.

Sesamoid bones are small auxiliary bones that form near joints and contribute to their stability and function. Thus far, providing a comprehensive developmental model or classification system for this highly diverse group of bones has been challenging. Here, we compare our previously reported mechanisms of patella development in the mouse with those of two anatomically different sesamoids, namely lateral fabella and digit sesamoids. We show that all three types of sesamoid bones originate from Sox9+ /Scx+ progenitors under the regulation of TGFβ and independently of mechanical stimuli from mus

Bipartite hallucal sesamoid bones: relationship with hallux valgus and metatarsal index.

OBJECTIVE: The objective was to relate the incidence of the partition of the hallucal sesamoid bones to the size of the first metatarsal and the hallux valgus deformity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a sample of 474 radiographs, the frequency of appearance of bipartite sesamoids was studied. The length and relative protrusion of the first metatarsal, and the hallux abductus angle, were measured and compared between the feet with and without sesamoid partition. RESULTS: The results showed that 14.6% of the feet studied had at least one partite sesamoid, that the sesamoid most frequently divided w

The sesamoid bones of the hands and feet: participators in arthritis.

The sesamoids generally appear as small ovoid bones adjacent to articulations or at sites where tendons are angled about osseous surfaces. At either location they participate in joint afflictions, the pattern of abnormality being remarkably constant and predictable. Sesamoids may demonstrate osseous erosion in rheumatoid arthritis, bony proliferation or "whiskering" in rheumatoid variants, joint space narrowing and bony ankylosis in septic arthritis, and eburnation and osteophyte formation in osteoarthritis and diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis. These changes become particularly importa

Fractures of the sesamoid bone of the thumb.

Fracture of thumb sesamoids is a rare injury. We are reporting four cases. In two cases, the fracture involved the ulnar sesamoid and in two others, the radial sesamoid. The right thumb was affected in two patients and the left thumb in the other two. In one patient, arthrography of the metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb demonstrated contrast leakage from the volar aspect of the joint and confirmed volar plate rupture. All patients were treated conservatively with immobilization. Normal hand function was restored in all four patients. Sesamoid fractures may accompany severe injuries of the

Murine metapodophalangeal sesamoid bones: morphology and potential means of mineralization underlying function.

Normal murine metapodophalangeal sesamoid bones, closely associated with tendons, were examined in terms of their structure and mineralization with reference to their potential function following crystal deposition. This study utilized radiography, whole mount staining, histology, and conventional electron microscopy to establish a maturation timeline of mineral formation in 1- to 6-week-old metapodophalangeal sesamoids from CD-1 mice. An intimate cellular and structural relationship was documented in more detail than previously described between the sesamoid bone, tendon, and fibrocartilage e

Percutaneous screw fixation for fractures of the sesamoid bones of the hallux.

Over a period of one year we treated nine fractures ofhe sesamoid bones of the hallux, five of which were in the medial sesamoid. All patients had symptoms on exercise, but only one had a recent history of injury. The mean age of the patients was 27 years (17 to 45) and there were six men. The mean duration of symptoms was nine months (1.5 to 48). The diagnosis was based on clinical and radiological investigations. We describe a new surgical technique for percutaneous screw fixation for these fractures using a Barouk screw. All the patients were assessed before and after surgery using the Amer
