Plant reproduction is a fundamental process on Earth from the perspective of biodiversity, biomass gain, and crop productivity. It is therefore important to understand the sex determination process, and many researchers are investigating the molecular basis of this phenomenon. However, information on the influence of transcription factors (TFs), genes that encode DNA-binding proteins, on this process is limited, although cucumber is a model plant in this regard. In the present study, based on RNA-seq data for differentially expressed genes (DEGs), we aimed to investigate the regulatory TFs tha

OBJECTIVE: Current understanding of sex determination and differentiation mechanisms during early chicken embryonic development remains incomplete. To address this, we applied RNA sequencing to identify male-female expression differences at critical developmental stages (E0 blastocysts, E3.5-E6.5 genital ridges, E18.5 gonads), focusing on glycolysis, histone acetylation, and DNA methylation. This approach aims to unravel key regulatory mechanisms and advance developmental biology insights.
METHODS: We analyzed molecular mechanisms of chicken sex determination at key stages (E0 blastocysts, E3

The pelvic inlet is one of the critical constraints within the relatively narrow birth canal for the passage of the fetal head. This study tested the hypothesis that the shape of the pelvic inlet differs between females and males, with the expectation that the female pelvic inlet is more elliptical than its male counterpart. Abdomino-pelvic computed tomography images from 600 cases, equally distributed by sex and age groups, were analyzed. Using 3D reconstruction, image processing, ellipse fitting, and a genetic algorithm, we evaluated whether the proposed measures of elliptical similarity in

AIMS: Significant sex disparities in mental health have been observed amongst resettled refugees, yet how these disparities and their determinants evolve over time remains unclear. This study sought to quantitatively unravel determinants and changes in mental health disparities by sex.
METHODS: Data were drawn from Waves 1 (2013-2014), 5 (2017-2018) and 6 (2023) of the 10-year Building a New Life in Australia (BNLA) cohort. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and high risk of severe mental illness (HR-SMI) were measured using the PTSD-8 and Kessler-6 scales. Fairlie method was used to quant

Differentiated sex chromosomes are believed to be evolutionarily stable, while poorly differentiated sex chromosomes are considered to be prone to turnovers. With around 1700 currently known species forming ca 15% of reptile species diversity, skinks (family Scincidae) are a very diverse group of squamates known for their large ecological and morphological variability. Skinks generally have poorly differentiated and cytogenetically indistinguishable sex chromosomes, and their sex determination was suggested to be highly variable. Here, we determined X-linked genes in the common sandfish (Scinc

The development of non-recombining sex chromosomes has radical effects on the evolution of discrete sexes and sexual dimorphism. Although dioecy is rare in plants, sex chromosomes have evolved repeatedly throughout the diversification of angiosperms, and many of these sex chromosomes are relatively young compared to those found in vertebrates. In this study, we designed and used a sequence capture array to identify a novel sex-linked region (SLR) in Salix nigra, a basal species in the willow clade, and demonstrated that this species has XY heterogamety. We did not detect any genetic overlap wi

Mammalian male sex differentiation is triggered during embryogenesis by the activation of the Y-linked testis-determining gene SRY. Since insufficient or delayed expression of SRY results in XY gonadal sex reversal, accurate regulation of SRY is critical for male development in XY animals. In humans, dysregulation of SRY may cause disorders of sex development. Mouse Sry is the most intensively studied mammalian model of sex determination. Sry expression is controlled in a spatially and temporally stringent manner. Several transcription factors play a key role in sex determination as trans-acti

Animals determine their sex genetically (GSD: genetic sex determination) and/or environmentally (ESD: environmental sex determination). Medaka (Oryzias latipes) employ a XX/XY GSD system, however, they display female-to-male sex reversal in response to various environmental changes such as temperature, hypoxia, and green light. Interestingly, we found that 5 days of starvation during sex differentiation caused female-to-male sex reversal. In this situation, the metabolism of pantothenate and fatty acid synthesis plays an important role in sex reversal. Metabolism is associated with other biolo

Sex assignment of children born with ambiguous genitalia is a difficult and responsible decision based on limited empirical evidence regarding future development of gender identity/role, sexual orientation, and sexual functioning. Sex of assignment and rearing has appeared to be a prognosticator of future gender identity, usually better than the other criteria of sex (chromosomes, gonadal tissue, prenatal and postnatal hormonal profiles). The decision to assign a sex is guided by the prognosis of the "optimal" sex for the newborn, of which the elements are an overall sex-appropriate appearance

Sex chromosomes can differ between species as a result of evolutionary turnover, a process that can be driven by evolution of the sex determination pathway. Canonical models of sex chromosome turnover hypothesize that a new master sex determining gene causes an autosome to become a sex chromosome or an XY chromosome pair to switch to a ZW pair (or vice versa). Here, a novel paradigm for the evolution of sex determination and sex chromosomes is presented, in which there is an evolutionary transition in the master sex determiner, but the X chromosome remains unchanged. There are three documented

In most animal species, the sex-determining pathway is typically initiated by the presence/absence of a primary genetic cue at a critical point during development. This primary genetic cue is often located on a single locus-referred to as sex chromosomes-and can be limited to females (in a ZZ/ZW system) or males (in an XX/XY system). One trademark of sex chromosomes is a restriction or cessation of recombination surrounding the sex-limited region (to prevent its inheritance in the homogametic sex). This may lead to-through a variety of mechanisms-higher amounts of genetic divergence within thi

Non-avian reptiles, unlike mammals and birds, have undergone numerous sex determination changes. Casque-Headed Lizards have replaced the ancestral XY system shared across pleurodonts with a new pair of XY chromosomes. However, the evolutionary forces that triggered this transition have remained unclear. An interesting hypothesis suggests that species with intermediate states, with sex chromosomes but also thermal-induced sex reversal at specific incubation temperatures, could be more susceptible to sex determination turnovers. We contrasted genotypic data (presence/absence of the Y chromosome)

Few taxa exhibit the variability of sex-determining modes as amphibians. However, due to the presence of homomorphic sex chromosomes in many species, this phenomenon has been difficult to study. The Australian frog, Litoria aurea, has been relatively well studied over the past 20 years due to widespread declines largely attributable to chytrid fungus. However, it has been subject to few molecular studies and its mode of sex determination remained unknown. We applied DArTseq™ to develop sex-linked single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and restriction fragment presence/absence (PA) markers in 4

The production of male and female offspring is often determined by the presence of specific sex chromosomes which control sex-specific expression, and sex chromosomes evolve through reduced recombination and specialized gene content. Here we present the genomes of Chrysomya rufifacies, a monogenic blow fly (females produce female or male offspring, exclusively) by separately sequencing and assembling each type of female and the male. The genomes (> 25X coverage) do not appear to have any sex-linked Muller F elements (typical for many Diptera) and exhibit little differentiation between groups s

Sex, that is, whether one is physically male or female, is the basic dichotomy of life. Sex is important not only for reproductive role, but also for physical attributes, personal identity and disease susceptibility. Sex determination is genetically controlled, with the key event in males being the transmission of a Y chromosome from father to offspring. The sex-determining gene on the Y chromosome, SRY, triggers the expression of a repertoire of other genes that cause the undifferentiated gonad to develop as a testis. Hormones secreted by the developing testis cause the internal and external

B chromosomes are extra, non-essential chromosomes present in addition to the normal complement of A chromosomes. Many species of cichlid fish in Lake Malawi carry a haploid, female-restricted B chromosome. Here we show that this B chromosome exhibits drive, with an average transmission rate of 70%. The offspring of B-transmitting females exhibit a strongly female-biased sex ratio. Genotyping of these offspring reveals the B chromosome carries a female sex determiner that is epistatically dominant to an XY system on linkage group 7. We suggest that this sex determiner evolved to enhance the me

BACKGROUND: Salicaceae species have diverse sex determination systems and frequent sex chromosome turnovers. However, compared with poplars, the diversity of sex determination in willows is poorly understood, and little is known about the evolutionary forces driving their turnover. Here, we characterized the sex determination in two Salix species, S. chaenomeloides and S. arbutifolia, which have an XY system on chromosome 7 and 15, respectively.
RESULTS: Based on the assemblies of their sex determination regions, we found that the sex determination mechanism of willows may have underlying sim
