Sex-specific factors in microvascular angina.

In women presenting for evaluation of suspected ischemic symptoms, a diagnosis of normal coronary arteries is 5 times more common than it is in men. These women are often labelled as having cardiac syndrome X, and a subset of them have microvascular angina caused by microvascular coronary dysfunction (MCD). MCD is not benign and is associated with an annual 2.5% cardiac event rate. Noninvasive testing for MCD remains insensitive, although newer imaging modalities, such as adenosine cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, appear promising. The gold standard for diagnosis of MCD is coronary reactivi

Sex-Specific Factors Influencing HIV Infection.

Immune responses are key in controlling viral infections such as HIV-1, which remains a global challenge to public health. X/Y-chromosome-encoded genes and sex steroid hormones can modulate immune cells and drive distinct patterns of gene and protein expression involved in antiviral function, impacting sex-dependent immune responses and altering the balance of specific immune pathways. These sex-specific differences in antiviral immune responses have significant consequences for the outcome of HIV-1 infection. A better understanding of sex differences in HIV-1-specific antiviral immunity is re

Disentangling sex differences in PTSD risk factors.

Despite extensive research on sex/gender differences in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), underlying mechanisms are still not fully understood. Here we present a systematic overview of three sex/gender-related risk pathways. We assessed 16 risk factors as well as 3-month PTSD severity in a prospective cohort study (n=2924) of acutely traumatized individuals and investigated potential mediators in the pathway between sex assigned at birth and PTSD severity using multiple mediation analysis with regularization. Six risk factors were more prevalent/severe in women, and none were more pronounc

Sex-based differences in inguinal hernia factors.

BACKGROUND: Much of our knowledge about inguinal hernias is based on males. Meanwhile, it is established that women have worse outcomes after inguinal hernia repair, with more chronic pain and higher recurrences. Pediatric literature shows inguinal hernias in females are more likely to be bilateral, incarcerated, and carry a stronger genetic predisposition than males. We aimed to evaluate sex-based differences in inguinal hernia factors in adults, to help supplement the paucity of literature in the adult population. METHODS: An institutional database of patients undergoing repair of primary i

Sex-related factors in autoimmune liver diseases.

Autoimmune diseases are a broad range of diseases in which the immune system produces an inappropriate response to self-antigens. This results in inflammation, damage, or dysfunction of tissues and/or organs. Many autoimmune diseases are more common in women and differences between female and male immune and autoimmune responses have been well documented. In general, most of the autoimmune diseases seem to affect more females, although there are exceptions. Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH), primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), and primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) are considered to be autoimmune li

Factors predictive of regret in sex reassignment.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the features and calculate the frequency of sex-reassigned subjects who had applied for reversal to their biological sex, and to compare these with non-regretful subjects. An inception cohort was retrospectively identified consisting of all subjects with gender identity disorder who were approved for sex reassignment in Sweden during the period 1972-1992. The period of time that elapsed between the application and this evaluation ranged from 4 to 24 years. The total cohort consisted of 218 subjects. The results showed that 3.8% of the patients who we

Is sex an independent prognostic factor in esthesioneuroblastoma?

OBJECTIVE: To determine if sex independently affects presentation and disease-specific survival (DSS) in patients with esthesioneuroblastoma (ENB). STUDY DESIGN: A case-control study from the Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) data base. METHODS: The assessment identified 611 patients in the SEER data base who were diagnosed with ENB from 1988 to 2010. Data on race, ethnicity, age at diagnosis, sex, histologic grade, radiation treatment status, and surgical treatment status of patients with ENB from 1988 to 2010 were extracted. Factors influencing sex differences in poststroke functional outcome.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Our objective was to identify factors that contribute to or modify the sex difference in poststroke functional outcome. METHODS: Ischemic strokes (n=439) were identified from the Brain Attack Surveillance in Corpus Christi (BASIC) Project (2008-2011). Data were ascertained from interviews (baseline and 90 days post stroke) and medical records. Functional outcome was measured as an average of 22 activities of daily living (ADL)/instrumental ADL items (range, 1-4; higher scores worse function). Tobit regression was used to estimate sex differences and to identify confoun

Meningococcal carriage: prevalence and sex-related risk factors.

A retrospective analysis was done to examine whether sexual behaviour was associated with meningococcal carriage. Over the 4 month period from January to April 1994, 136 (27.4%) of the 496 consecutive new/re-registered genito-urinary medicine clinic attenders showed meningococcal carriage. Two (15.4%) of 13 homosexual men compared with 134 (27.7%) of 484 heterosexual men and women had evidence of meningococcal carriage. Relative risk (RR) of meningococcal carriage was 1.8 with > 10 lifetime partners and 1.2 with 3-10 partners (P < 0.007). RR with age group of 16-25 was 4.2 and for 26-35 it was

Sex steroids and growth factors in mammary cancer.

We have studied the effect of mitogens on the proliferation of the human breast cancer cell line MCF7 under growth factor-defined culture conditions. Under these conditions MCF7 cells showed the strict hormone dependence that has been established in vivo (in nude mice). E2, insulin or insulin-like growth factors were found to be essential mitogens for these cells. E2 synergistically stimulated proliferation in combination with suboptimal doses of these growth factors. This latter combination of mitogens could be important for in vivo growth regulation of hormone-dependent breast tumours. Synth

Mechanisms of disease: Transcription factors in sex determination--relevance to human disorders of sex development.

Sex determination is the series of molecular events that direct the undifferentiated bipotential gonad to become either a testis or an ovary. In humans, disruption of this process results in intersexuality, also referred to as disorders of sex development (DSD). Despite the discovery of the sex-determining gene SRY (sex-determining region Y) 15 years ago, the molecular mechanisms of sex determination remain poorly understood. Analysis of clinically relevant mutations of sex-determining genes in individuals with DSD has provided considerable insight into the function of these genes. The majorit

Update on sex specific risk factors in cardiovascular disease.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death worldwide and accounts for roughly 1 in 5 deaths in the United States. Women in particular face significant disparities in their cardiovascular care when compared to men, both in the diagnosis and treatment of CVD. Sex differences exist in the prevalence and effect of cardiovascular risk factors. For example, women with history of traditional cardiovascular risk factors including hypertension, tobacco use, and diabetes carry a higher risk of major cardiovascular events and mortality when compared to men. These discrepancies in terms of

Sex-specific cardiovascular risk factors in the UK Biobank.

The lack of sex-specific cardiovascular disease criteria contributes to the underdiagnosis of women compared to that of men. For more than half a century, the Framingham Risk Score has been the gold standard to estimate an individual's risk of developing cardiovascular disease based on the age, sex, cholesterol levels, blood pressure, diabetes status, and the smoking status. Now, machine learning can offer a much more nuanced insight into predicting the risk of cardiovascular diseases. The UK Biobank is a large database that includes traditional risk factors and tests related to the cardiovasc

Genomic factors underlying sex differences in trauma-related disorders.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a devastating illness with treatment that is effective in only approximately half of the population. This limited rate of response highlights the necessity for research into underlying individual biological mechanisms that mediate development and progression of this disease, allowing for identification of patient-specific treatments. PTSD has clear sex differences in both risk and symptom patterns. Thus, one approach is to characterize trauma-related changes between men and women who exhibit differences in treatment efficacy and response to trauma. Rece

Cardiogenic shock-sex-specific risk factors and outcome differences.

Cardiogenic shock (CS) remains a high-mortality condition despite technological and therapeutic advances. One key to potentially improving CS prognosis is understanding patient heterogeneity and which patients may benefit most from different treatment options, a key element of which is sex differences. While cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) have historically been considered a male-dominant condition, the field is increasingly aware that females are also a substantial portion of the patient population. While estrogen has been implicated in protective roles against CVD and tissue hypoxia, its role

Sex differences in factors predicting post-treatment opioid use.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Several reports have documented risk factors for opioid use following treatment discharge, yet few have assessed sex differences, and no study has assessed risk using contemporary machine learning approaches. The goal of the present paper was to inform treatments for opioid use disorder (OUD) by exploring individual factors for each sex that are most strongly associated with opioid use following treatment. DESIGN: Secondary analysis of Global Appraisal of Individual Needs (GAIN) database with follow-ups at 3, 6 and 12 months post-OUD treatment discharge, exploring demogra
