Sexual behavior in animals is important in ensuring the continuity of the generation. These behaviors differ in animal species. Sexual behaviors are shaped under the control of the reproductive system. Physiological stimuli produced by the reproductive system find their counterparts in the organism as reproductive activity. Reproductive activity display a critical role by transferring on the genetic heritage of organisms to the next generations. This activity, which is built on delicate balances, is associated with many systems in the organism. Nervous system, hormonal system, and circulatory

Theoretical models of animal and human sexual behavior have evolved from two very different literatures, yet they contain many common behavioral components that may reflect the action of similar neuroendocrine and neurochemical systems. The study of animal sexual behavior has been largely concerned with mechanisms that underlie the pattern of consummatory behaviors observed during copulation, behaviors that tend to be highly stereotyped, sexually differentiated, and species-specific. There are important species differences in the behavioral topography, endocrine control, and neural substrates

Female sexual dysfunctions are a heterogeneous group of symptoms with unknown but probably varying etiology. Social factors may contribute both to the prevalence and to the origin of these dysfunctions. The present review focuses on female hypoactive sexual desire disorder, sexual arousal disorder and orgasmic disorder. These disorders are generally the most common, according to epidemiological studies, and they can all be considered as disorders of motivation. An incentive motivational model of sexual behavior, applicable to humans as well as to non-human animals, is described and the dysfunc

The aim of this study was to investigate whether tactile stimulation in rabbits during the gestation phase improve the maternal behavior and human-animal relationships as well as the effects on reproductive behavior of male kits when reached maturity compared to induced stress. A total of 33 primiparous New Zealand does were selected after pregnancy confirmation and allocated in a randomized complete block design. The treatments applied were as follows: (C) animals not stimulated during the experimental period; (TS) animals that received tactile stimulation; and (SS) does which were immobilize

Normal or dysfunctional sexual behavior seems to be an important indicator of health or disease. Many health disorders in male patients affect sexual activity by directly causing erectile dysfunction, affecting sexual motivation, or both. Clinical evidence indicates that many diseases strongly disrupt sexual motivation and sexual performance in patients with depression, addiction, diabetes mellitus and other metabolic disturbances with obesity and diet-related factors, kidney and liver failure, circadian rhythm disorders, sleep disturbances including obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, developme

Research from a variety of methodologies is demonstrating a role for neuroanatomical structures in different aspects of sexual behavior. This article reviews the particular contribution of prefrontal-subcortical systems to sexual behavior, including regions of prefrontal cortex (i.e., dorsolateral, medial, and orbitofrontal cortex), and associated subcortical structures (i.e., basal ganglia and thalamus). Findings are integrated from functional neuroimaging and clinical studies in humans, as well as animal studies, which convergently illustrate the role of different prefrontal systems. In addi

Bestiality, or sexual contact between humans and nonhuman animals, is a poorly understood aspect of sexual behavior. There is a dearth of scientific research on the prevalence of bestiality, the motivations for individuals to engage in the behavior, and the risk that such individuals pose for interpersonal sexual and nonsexual violence. This study is a descriptive analysis of bestiality in all individuals found to be sexually violent predators (SVPs) in the state of Virginia between the years 2003 and 2017. Of 1,248 SVPs, 33 (2.6%) had a history of engaging in bestiality. SVPs with a history o

Drug use influences sexual behavior, performance, and can be associated with increased sexual risk-taking. Our prior results using an animal model indicate that progestogens contribute to hormonally-mediated changes in sexual behavior of female rodents during acute cocaine exposure. Androgens, such as testosterone, and its metabolite 3ɑ-androstanediol (3α-diol), and estradiol, are known to influence male sexual behavior, but can also alter the expression of sexual behavior of female rodents. As such, we investigated the influence of endogenous androgen and estradiol fluctuations on cocaine-med

PURPOSE: This study evaluated the effects of chronic infestation with Psoroptes ovis on sexual behavior, testosterone levels, and physiological parameters in New Zealand male rabbits. P. ovis is a common ectoparasite in domestic rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus); however, its impact on physiological parameters and sexual behavior, relevant to reproduction and animal welfare, as well as experimental validity, remains poorly understood.
METHODS: Twenty-three male rabbits were randomly assigned to control (n = 11) or experimentally infested (n = 12) groups and monitored for 77 days. Behavioral ass

RATIONALE: Methamphetamine (Meth) is a highly addictive psychostimulant associated with enhanced sexual desire, arousal, and sexual pleasure. Moreover, Meth abuse is frequently linked with the practice of sexual risk behavior and increased prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus. Currently, there is a lack of studies investigating the effects of Meth on maladaptive sexual behavior under controlled experimental settings in animal studies.
OBJECTIVE: The overall objective of the current study was to examine the effects of Meth on various aspects of male sexual behavior including maladaptive

An animal model of sexual fetishism was developed with male Japanese quail based on persistence of conditioned sexual responding during extinction to an inanimate object made of terrycloth (Experiments 1 and 3). This persistent responding occurred only in subjects that came to copulate with the terrycloth object, suggesting that the copulatory behavior served to maintain the fetishistic behavior. Sexual conditioning was carried out by pairing a conditioned stimulus (CS) with the opportunity to copulate with a female (the unconditioned stimulus or US). Copulation with the CS object and persiste

Women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) frequently experience decreased sexual arousal, desire, and sexual satisfaction. While the hypothalamus is known to regulate sexual behavior, the specific neuronal pathways affected in patients with PCOS are not known. To dissect the underlying neural circuitry, we capitalized on a robust preclinical animal model that reliably recapitulates all cardinal PCOS features. We discovered that female mice prenatally treated with anti-Müllerian hormone (PAMH) display impaired sexual behavior and sexual partner preference over the reproductive age. Blunted fe

In addition to displaying proceptive (hopping and darting) and receptive (lordosis) behaviors during a sexual encounter with a male, female rodents will regulate the timing of the encounter by engaging in a series of approaches and withdrawals from the male, a behavior termed paced mating behavior. Proceptive, receptive, and paced mating behaviors are all regulated by, and sensitive to, estrogen and progesterone, suggesting that compounds capable of disrupting these critical hormones may also perturb the display of female sexual behavior. The present experiments examined the impact of the sele

BACKGROUND: Early-life stress affects physiological development and produces changes in various aspects of emotional behavior.
AIM: We sought to examine the effects of double perinatal stress (DPS)-a combination of prenatal systemic hypoxic-ischemic (HI) insults and repeated early maternal separation-on the estrus cycle and sexual behavior of adult rats.
METHODS: HI was induced by clamping the uterine arteries of pregnant rats for 45 minutes on the 18th day of gestation (HI group). Sham control animals received laparotomy and anesthesia only. Pups were born at term. Maternal separation was p

Sexual behavior in the female rat is a highly motivated behavior first displayed during adolescence, a developmental period when neural circuits underlying motivation are not mature. This study characterizes the natural development of sexual motivation and behavior of female rats. We compared the incentive value of the male for mid-adolescent (PNDs:39-43), late adolescent (PNDs:49-53), and adult (PNDs:90-115) cycling females, using a male-female preference task and an ultrasonic vocalization emission test following exposure to a male or female stimulus animal. Furthermore, display of sexual an

Atrazine is one of the most used pesticides worldwide. It is detected in surface and groundwater, together with its active metabolite. In animals, atrazine's toxic effects are neuroendocrine, behavioral, and developmental alterations, in both males and females. However, there are few studies on the effects of atrazine on an adult animal exposed during puberty. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the behavioral and neurochemical effects of atrazine exposure during puberty on adult male and female rats' sexual behavior sphere. Wistar rats were exposed to different doses of atrazine (10, 30, or 100

To test further the idea that sexual behavior in rodents is mediated via the progesterone receptor (PR) in the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus, antisense and sense oligonucleotides to progesterone receptor were administered intracerebroventricularly into the third cerebral ventricle of ovariectomized estrogen-primed animals. Progesterone-facilitated sexual behavior was inhibited in animals treated with antisense oligonucleotides, with proceptive and receptive responses being minimal or completely suppressed. Sexual behavior was not altered by control sense oligonucleotides. In vitro b

Transplantation of hormone-producing cells is an experimental endocrine dysfunction treatment. The present study investigated the effects of orchidectomy (OE) and transplantation of interstitial cell suspension (ICS) on rat sexual behavior. Adult experimental animals were divided into two populations. One of these populations had sexual experience before the experiment and the other did not. Each population was divided into three groups: control group and two orchidectomized groups. One of the orchidectomized groups was treated with ICS, and the other was treated with the vehicle. The changes

Bestiality is an uncomfortable topic about which there is limited scientific literature. Prevalence research has focused on self-reported acts, and no research has established the actual frequency and nature of deliberate sex acts with animals. This quantitative, descriptive study examined 456 arrests for bestiality-related incidents in the United States from 1975 to 2015 to explore patterns of offending, offender characteristics, and how cases were adjudicated. The results suggest that animal sex offending may be linked to other criminal behavior, and involves a spectrum of sexual acts, inclu

Repeated social subjugation in early puberty lowers testosterone levels. We used hamsters to investigate the effects of social subjugation on male sexual behavior and metabolic activity within neural systems controlling social and motivational behaviors. Subjugated animals were exposed daily to aggressive adult males in early puberty for postnatal days 28 to 42, while control animals were placed in empty clean cages. On postnatal day 45, they were tested for male sexual behavior in the presence of receptive female. Alternatively, they were tested for mate choice after placement at the base of
