Shear characteristics and shear strength model of rock mass structural planes.

Accurately determining the shear strength of structural planes is crucial for evaluating the stability of rock masses. The shear test using the sawtooth structural plane usually captures the main influencing factors of its shear characteristics. In this study, the two-dimensional particle flow code (PFC2D) numerical simulation method was used to conduct shear tests on the sawtooth structural planes of rock masses with undulant angles of 10°, 20°, and 30°, respectively. With the increase in normal stress and the undulant angle, the shear failure of the structural planes was found to no longer b

Shear strength of the human femoral capital epiphyseal plate.

After the determination of the shear strength and modes of failure of the capital femoral epiphyseal plates in twenty-five pairs of hips obtained post mortem from children five days to fifteen years and ten months old, with the plate intact on one side and with the perichondrial fibrocartilaginous complex removed on the other, the gross and microscopic morphology was studied. The shear strength of the human epiphyseal plate varied with age and was greatly dependent on the surrounding perichondrial complex in infancy and early childhood, but less so in adolescence. When this complex was excised

Shearing bond strength of endodontic sealers to gutta-percha.

Strength of the bond of root canal sealers to gutta-percha seems to be an important property for maintaining the integrity of the apical seal. In the few studies published, different models and assessment methods were used. The purpose of our study was to adapt an effective and easily reproducible model and to test it on nine contemporary commercially available endodontic sealers. Gutta-percha disks with a diameter of 10 mm and thickness of 2 mm were prepared by warming gutta-percha cones and then fixed with plaster in 1-inch phenolic rings. Five-millimeter long sections of polyethylene tubing

Investigations into the Influence of Temperature on the Tensile Shear Strength of Various Adhesives.

The temperature resistance of glued timber, which is crucial for glued wood construction, represents a significant assessment criterion. To gain insights into this aspect, this study utilized methods such as a shear strength test in accordance with EN 302-1:2013-06 under thermal loading (from 20 °C to 200 °C), and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) to determine the glass transition temperature (Tg). An increase in thermal load resulted in a decrease in shear strength and an increase in wood breakage. A hierarchy of adhesive groups was established based on strength performance and wood fai

Effect of warm air on the shear bond strength of composite resins.

This investigation evaluated the operating characteristics of a recently introduced tooth dryer and its effect on the bond strength of three composite resins to etched enamel. The effect of varying air pressure, distance from the tip of the tooth dryer, and distance laterally from mid-air stream on temperature were measured using a rapid-response thermocouple. Specimens were subjected to shear forces either immediately after bonding or after 5 days of water storage. The air stream required from 32 to 41 seconds to reach maximal temperature; however, more than 90% of the maximal temperature was

Effect of ionic strength on shear-thinning nanoclay-polymer composite hydrogels.

Nanoclay-polymer shear-thinning composites are designed for a broad range of biomedical applications, including tissue engineering, drug delivery, and additive biomanufacturing. Despite the advances in clay-polymer injectable nanocomposites, colloidal properties of layered silicates are not fully considered in evaluating the in vitro performance of shear-thinning biomaterials (STBs). Here, as a model system, we investigate the effect of ions on the rheological properties and injectability of nanoclay-gelatin hydrogels to understand their behavior when prepared in physiological media. In partic

Factors associated with shear bond strength of composite resin to human enamel.

The preparation of enamel surfaces before etching by removing 0.5 mm of surface tooth structure is common-place in modern restorative dentistry. This study was designed to measure and compare the shear bond strength of composite resin bonded to prepared and unprepared enamel using various proprietary bonding systems. The analysed results failed to show significant differences between the shear bond strengths of the prepared and unprepared enamel specimens. Conditioning enamel surfaces for 60 seconds using 2.5% nitric acid where the solution was allowed to desiccate, resulted in significantly l

Material strengths of shear-induced platelet aggregation clots and coagulation clots.

Arterial occlusion by thrombosis is the immediate cause of some strokes, heart attacks, and peripheral artery disease. Most prior studies assume that coagulation creates the thrombus. However, a contradiction arises as whole blood (WB) clots from coagulation are too weak to stop arterial blood pressures (> 150 mmHg). We measure the material mechanical properties of elasticity and ultimate strength for Shear-Induced Platelet Aggregation (SIPA) type clots, that form under stenotic arterial hemodynamics in comparison with coagulation clots. The ultimate strength of SIPA clots averaged 4.6 ± 1.3 k

Effect of Freeze-Thaw Cycles on the Shear Strength of Root-Soil Composite.

A large alpine meadow in a seasonal permafrost zone exists in the west of Sichuan, which belongs to a part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, China. Due to the extreme climates and repeated freeze-thaw cycling, resulting in a diminishment in soil shear strength, disasters occur frequently. Plant roots increase the complexity of the soil freeze-thaw strength problem. This study applied the freeze-thaw cycle and direct shear tests to investigate the change in the shear strength of root-soil composite under freeze-thaw cycles. This study examined how freeze-thaw cycles and initial moisture content aff
