Shikimic acid in the light of current knowledge.

Shikimic acid (SA) has been mainly used in the pharmaceutical industry for production of drugs, however, recently it has also appeared in the world of cosmetics. So far, there have not been many publications on cosmetics containing SA or research studies on the compound, especially those that would involve testing cosmetic products on subjects. The main source of SA is star anise. The recommended concentration of SA in cosmetic preparations ranges between 1 and 5%. The pH of a 5% solution of SA in water is 3. SA at a concentration of 5% has a similar exfoliative effect to that of 50% glycolic

Shikimic acid prevents cartilage matrix destruction in human chondrocytes.

Abnormal reduction of extracellular matrix (ECM), including type II collagen and aggrecan, caused by tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) is an important pathological feature of osteoarthritis (OA). Shikimic acid (SA), derived from natural plants, has displayed effective pharmacological properties in diverse diseases. The biological roles of SA in OA have not been reported before. Here, we found that treatment with SA (1 mM, 10 mM) prevented TNF-α-induced degradation of type II collagen and aggrecan ECM in human primary chondrocytes culture in vitro. Importantly, we also reported that SA treatment

The remarkable role of shikimic acid pathway in humic acid formation during biochar and montmorillonite addition composting.

The final products of shikimic acid pathway, aromatic amino acids (AAA), can be used as humic acid (HA) precursors. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore the contribution of shikimic acid pathway on the formation of HA during composting. Four composting treatments were carried out in this study, including the control, biochar addition, montmorillonite addition, biochar and montmorillonite combined addition. The results showed that the correlations between AAA and HA were enhanced during combined addition composting, and functional microorganisms involved in the shikimic acid pathway

Structural and Biochemical Analyses Reveal that Chlorogenic Acid Inhibits the Shikimate Pathway.

Chlorogenic acid (CGA) is a phenolic compound with well-known antibacterial properties against pathogens. In this study, structural and biochemical characterization was used to show the inhibitory role of CGA against the enzyme of the shikimate pathway, a well-characterized drug target in several pathogens. Here, we report the crystal structures of dehydroquinate synthase (DHQS), the second enzyme of the shikimate pathway, from Providencia alcalifaciens (PaDHQS), in binary complex with NAD and ternary complex with NAD and CGA. Structural analyses reveal that CGA occupies the substrate position

Shikimic acid ameliorates immobilization-induced muscle atrophy through regulation of inflammation and muscle protein homeostasis.

Immobilization induces skeletal muscle atrophy by disrupting muscle protein homeostasis, leading to progressive loss of muscle mass and function. Shikimic acid (SA), a plant-derived organic acid with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, has not been previously evaluated in immobilization-associated muscle atrophy. This study aimed to determine whether SA attenuates skeletal muscle atrophy by regulating inflammation and muscle protein turnover using cellular and animal models. In tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα)-induced L6 myotubes, SA significantly suppressed inflammatory cytokine expre

The role of indole and other shikimic acid derived maize volatiles in the attraction of two parasitic wasps.

After herbivore attack, plants release a plethora of different volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which results in odor blends that are attractive to predators and parasitoids of these herbivores. VOCs in the odor blends emitted by maize plants (Zea mays) infested by lepidopteran larvae are well characterized. They are derived from at least three different biochemical pathways, but the relative importance of each pathway for the production of VOCs that attract parasitic wasps is unknown. Here, we studied the importance of shikimic acid derived VOCs for the attraction of females of the parasito

Rapamycin-sensitive mTORC1 signaling in the medial prefrontal cortex contributes to the antidepressant-like behavioral effects of shikimic acid in mice.

AIMS: Major depressive disorder (MDD) represents a major contributor to disability, yet currently prescribed monoamine-based antidepressants are limited by modest therapeutic efficacy and delayed clinical onset. Recent studies have demonstrated that ketamine, an N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor antagonist, rapidly engages mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) signaling in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), critically linked to its fast-acting antidepressant actions. Shikimic acid (SA), a natural compound widely found in various plants, has been reported to exhibit mTORC1-related si
