[Brucellosis in Siberia and the Far East].

Epidemiological analysis has indicated that rat and reindeer brucellosis foci are of definite value in Siberia and the Far East in the liquidation of brucellosis ones. Foci of cattle and reindeer have been first established, evidence has been provided for the epidemiological significance of fifth-biological variant B. ovis and B. suis, as well as the ecological confinement of peculiar B. rangiferi cultures to the brucellosis foci in the Arctic. To plan antibrucellosis efforts, it is necessary to take into account the incidence of human infection, as well as the insidious circulation of the bac

Cultural identity in Siberia and in analytical practice.

This paper discusses the main features of Siberian identity formed throughout the historical development of Siberia under the influence of social, economic, geographical, climatic, and other factors. Siberian cultural identity is closely connected with the mythology and ancient religion of the indigenous peoples of Siberia - shamanism, whose rituals, images, symbols, and motifs are often manifested in the clients' dreams. Following an in-depth study of Siberian history and culture, I formulate a complex of homelessness rooted in a deep collective trauma that left its imprint on people's psyche

[Characteristics of parotitis virus, isolated in Siberia].

Two strains of parotitis virus were isolated from patients with clinical symptoms of the disease in epidemiological screening which was carried out during an outbreak of epidemic parotitis in the village of Koltsovo in 1994. The strains were isolated from the saliva of children aged 7 and 8 years vaccinated with live parotitis vaccine at the age of 1.5 years. Primers for the genome site coding for the gene F terminal and the SH gene (a total of 509 n. p.) were estimated and synthesized and the site was amplified. Electron-microscopic examination of purified virus and Vero cells infected with i

Lactose malabsorption in Khants in western Siberia.

BACKGROUND: We wanted to estimate the prevalence of selective lactose malabsorption (SLM) in Khants, a small Finno-Ugric population living in Western Siberia who have traditionally consumed no milk in adulthood. METHODS: A total of 80 Khants, aged 8-57 years and living on the middle reaches of the River Ob, were studied. The diagnosis was based on a lactose tolerance test; general malabsorption was excluded by a glucose-galactose tolerance test whenever possible. In six subjects electronmicroscopic examination of the duodenal mucosa was performed. RESULTS: The prevalence of SLM in the Khants

[Lissavirus in bats residing in the South of West Siberia].

We caught, 2002-2003 in caves of Novosibirsk Region and Altai Territory, 52 bats (Myotis daubentoni, Myotis brandtii, Murina leucogaster, Plecotus auritus). Examinations of the animals' brain samples by fluorescence antibody microscopy and RT-PCR revealed lyssaviruses, genotype 1, which were close to strains provoking rabies in the local animals. According to the results, bats can be involved in keeping alive the rabies foci in Western Siberia, which must be taken into account in antiepizootic measures.

[State of nonpulmonary tuberculosis care in West Siberia].

Basic epidemiologic parameters in relation to extrapulmonary tuberculosis were analysed in 6 regions of West Siberia as well as the state of the material-technical base of extrapulmonary service in these areas. Despite a general reduction of the revealed incidence and morbidity of extrapulmonary tuberculosis, the true incidence persists at a high level with predominance of advanced forms of the process. One of the causes of this situation is insufficient material-technical support of extrapulmonary tuberculosis service in West Siberia.
