Placentation in Sigmodontinae: a rodent taxon native to South America.

BACKGROUND: Sigmodontinae, known as "New World rats and mice," is a large subfamily of Cricetidae for which we herein provide the first comprehensive investigation of the placenta. METHODS: Placentas of various gestational ages ranging from early pregnancy to near term were obtained for five genera, i.e. Necromys, Euryoryzomys, Cerradomys, Hylaeamys, and Oligoryzomys. They were investigated by means of histology, immunohistochemistry, a proliferation marker, DBA-lectin staining and transmission electron microscopy. RESULTS: The chorioallantoic placenta was organized in a labyrinthine zone, s

Pattern of protein expression in the epididymis of Oligoryzomys nigripes (Cricetidae, Sigmodontinae).

In the epididymis, epithelial cells work in a concerted manner to create a luminal environment for sperm maturation, transport, and storage. However, the cell functions may be affected by anthropogenic factors, causing negative impacts on male fertility. In our study, we describe the pattern of protein expression in the epithelium and luminal fluid from epididymis of Oligoryzomys nigripes, a South American sigmodontine rodent whose reproductive biology has been little studied. Nine animals were captured from a preserved area of Atlantic Forest, where the exposure to anthropogenic influences is

Chromosomal phylogeny and comparative chromosome painting among Neacomys species (Rodentia, Sigmodontinae) from eastern Amazonia.

BACKGROUND: The Neacomys genus is predominantly found in the Amazon region, and belongs to the most diverse tribe of the Sigmodontinae subfamily (Rodentia, Cricetidae, Oryzomyini). The systematics of this genus and questions about its diversity and range have been investigated by morphological, molecular (Cytb and COI sequences) and karyotype analysis (classic cytogenetics and chromosome painting), which have revealed candidate species and new distribution areas. Here we analyzed four species of Neacomys by chromosome painting with Hylaeamys megacephalus (HME) whole-chromosome probes, and comp

Epizootiology of arenaviral infections in the white-throated woodrat (Muridae: Sigmodontinae) and other woodrats in Arizona.

The purpose of this study was to extend and refine our knowledge of the geographical distribution and natural host relationships of the arenaviruses associated with woodrats indigenous to Arizona. Antibody to a Tacaribe serocomplex virus was found in 112 of 1,250 white-throated woodrats, five of 208 Mexican woodrats, one of 114 Stephen's woodrats, and none of 862 other rodents captured at 51 sites in 10 counties in Arizona. Of the 112 antibody-positive white-throated woodrats, 109 (97.3%) were captured within extensive, dense patches of prickly pear cactus and cane cholla in three counties in

Calodium hepaticum (Trichuroidea: Capillariidae) Infection In Akodon azarae: First Description of Histopathological Lesions In Sigmodontinae.

Calodium hepaticum (Trichinellida: Capillaridae) is a parasitic nematode of mammals distributed worldwide. Although this parasite can infect the liver of a wide diversity of mammals (including humans), it is mostly associated with Muroidea hosts. Sigmodontinae rodents were recently recognized as important hosts of this parasite in Argentina, but the impact of this parasitism on these hosts has not been established. Here we report results of histopathological analyses of 40 livers of Akodon azarae infected with C. hepaticum. Lesions were classified into 4 categories: level 0, absence of lesions

Molecular diversification of Trichuris spp. from Sigmodontinae (Cricetidae) rodents from Argentina based on mitochondrial DNA sequences.

A molecular phylogenetic hypothesis is presented for the genus Trichuris based on sequence data from mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase 1 (cox1) and cytochrome b (cob). The taxa consisted of nine populations of whipworm from five species of Sigmodontinae rodents from Argentina. Bayesian Inference, Maximum Parsimony, and Maximum Likelihood methods were used to infer phylogenies for each gene separately but also for the combined mitochondrial data and the combined mitochondrial and nuclear dataset. Phylogenetic results based on cox1 and cob mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) revealed three clades strongl

Autosomal and sex chromosomal polymorphisms with multiple rearrangements and a new karyotype in the genus Rhipidomys (Sigmodontinae, Rodentia).

Two diploid numbers and five karyomorphs were found in ten specimens of Rhipidomys (Sigmodontinae, Rodentia) from three states in Brazil: 2n = 50 from Amazonas, and 2n = 44 from Mato Grosso and Bahia. CBG, GTG, and RBG-banding and Ag-NOR analyses were performed, as well as fluorescence in situ: hybridization with (T2AG3)7 probes. The new diploid number of 2n = 50 was associated with two different fundamental numbers (FN = 71 and 72) as a result of pericentric inversions and addition/deletion of constitutive heterochromatin. The samples from two localities (Aripuanã and Vila Rica) in the state

Sigmodontinae rodents as potential reservoirs for Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in the Delta and Paraná Islands ecoregion, Argentina.

The Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.) complex includes a group of spirochete bacteria that are involved in transmission cycles with vertebrates and the ticks associated with them. Rodents play an essential role in the ecoepidemiology of Borrelia, acting as reservoirs for the bacteria and hosts for ticks. To identify potential reservoir vertebrate hosts of Borrelia spirochetes in Argentina, we conducted molecular analyses on tissues obtained from a population of Sigmodontinae rodents inhabiting the Delta and Parana Islands ecoregion. We report the presence of B. burgdorferi s.l. complex ge

The First Quaternary Record of the Rodent Akodon kadiweu Brandão, Percequillo, D'Elía, Paresque, & Carmignotto, 2021 (Rodentia: Cricetidae: Sigmodontinae).

Rodents of the genus Akodon comprise 41 extant species, and are considered the most diverse genus of the tribe Akodontini. The most recently described extant species is Akodon kadiweu, known exclusively from Serra da Bodoquena, a karstic region located in Mato Grosso do Sul state, Brazil. Some sub-fossil and fossil specimens of Akodon have been reported in recent years for Brazil, but most remain unidentified at the species level. Here we examine the identity of Quaternary specimens of Akodon sp. from the limestone cave Nossa Senhora Aparecida, located in Serra da Bodoquena. Quantitative chara

Comparative chromosome banding analysis of three South American species of rice rats of the genus Oryzomys (Rodentia, Sigmodontinae).

Comparative G- and C-banding analysis in three species of rice rats, namely Oryzomys megacephalus from Peru and French Guiana, O. yunganus (Peru) and O. nitidus (Bolivia) was carried out. It revealed that Peruvian O. megacephalus (2N = 52, NFa = 62) and that from French Guiana (2N = 54, NFa = 64) differ from each other by one Rb translocation and one heterochromatic arm addition/deletion. Three further Rb translocations separate them from O. yunganus (2N = 58, NFa = 62). Only 16 out of 39 autosomal pairs of O. nitidus (2N = 80, NFa = 86) shared homologous banding patterns with O. yunganus, 4 o

Phenotypic plasticity in response to low quality diet in the South American omnivorous rodent Akodon azarae (Rodentia: Sigmodontinae).

We studied the responses in the omnivorous rodent A. azarae submitted to a low quality diet at morphological, physiological and biochemical levels. At short term, a decrease in body mass occurred. A later increase in food consumption constituted a strategy that allowed a temporal recovery of physical condition. However, hyperphagia appeared not to be enough to maintain physical condition after 30 days of low quality diet consumption. At the morphological level, an increase in length (9%) of the anterior portion of the gut occurred, the part of the gut where digestion and absorption take place.

Parasite prevalence and community diversity in sympatric and allopatric populations of two woodrat species (Sigmodontinae: Neotoma) in central California.

Patterns of host-parasite association may vary across the landscape in part because of host and parasite diversity, divergence, local ecology, or interactions among these factors. In central coastal California, we quantified parasite prevalence, infection intensity, and diversity in two sister species of woodrats (Neotoma fuscipes and Neotoma macrotis) where the species co-occur (sympatry) and where each species exists alone (allopatry). In feces from 50 adults we identified seven taxa: the protozoans Eimeria, Giardia, and Cryptosporidium, the nematodes Trichuris, Aspicularis, and Eucoleus, an

Genome assembly of the Neotropical marsh rat Holochilus nanus (Cricetidae: Sigmodontinae) brings insights on B and sex chromosome evolution.

The Neotropical region comprises approximately 27% of mammal diversity, and rodents of the tribe Oryzomyini represent a significant portion of that. This diversity is reflected in the karyotype variability of the tribe, with a huge number of chromosomal rearrangements involving autosomal, sex, and B chromosomes. Supernumerary B chromosomes were described for more than 10 species, four of them belonging to the genus Holochilus. Therefore, we sequenced the genome of two H. nanus specimens with different karyotypes: a female with (HNA-XXB) and a male without (HNA-XY) a B chromosome. We also seque

Redescription of Trichuris laevitestis (Nematoda: Trichuridae) from Akodon azarae and Scapteromys aquaticus (Sigmodontinae: Cricetidae) in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina.

Trichuris spp. have a cosmopolitan distribution; the species are typically identified by features related to the reproductive system. Trichuris laevitestis was described on the basis of specimens collected from rodents captured in Punta Lara, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. Here, T. laevitestis is redescribed considering new and relevant morphological features of diagnostic importance such as arrangement of spines on the spicular sheath, spicule length, length and shape of proximal cloacal tube, paracloacal papillae, features of the vulva, and ratios between different features.
