A Rare Case of Synchronous Primary Gallbladder and Sigmoid Colon Neoplasms.

Colorectal cancer is considered the third most common cancer worldwide. On the other hand, gallbladder cancer is rare. Synchronous tumors in both the colon and the gallbladder are extremely infrequent. Herein, we report the case of a female patient with sigmoid colon cancer and incidental detection of synchronous gallbladder cancer on histopathological examination of the surgical specimen. As synchronous gallbladder and colonic carcinomas are rare, physicians should be aware of these so that an optimal course of treatment can be chosen.

Solitary Fibrous Tumor of the Sigmoid Colon Masquerading as an Adnexal Neoplasm.

Solitary fibrous tumor is a rare, benign spindle cell neoplasm that was first described in the thoracic pleura. This tumor is now known to occur at many extrapleural sites. There are established criteria for the diagnosis of malignant solitary fibrous tumor including ≥4 mitotic figures per 10 high-power fields, increased cellularity, cytologic atypia, infiltrative margins, and/or necrosis. Although all solitary fibrous tumors have the potential to recur or metastasize, those with malignant histologic features tend to behave more aggressively. We report a case of solitary fibrous tumor, with ma

Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm penetrating sigmoid colon: A case report.

Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) is principally characterized by low-grade cytology without evidence of invasion to other organs. We report a LAMN surgical case whose appendiceal tumor penetrated the sigmoid colon wall. An 87-year-old man was referred for endoscopic resection (ER) of a colon polyp. Despite four ERs over 5 years, the polyp recurred at the same site. Laparoscopic surgery revealed a dilated appendix firmly attached to the sigmoid colon. We performed en bloc resection of both the sigmoid colon and appendix without tumor exposure. The histopathological evaluation show

Non-absorbable suture granuloma mimicking a retroperitoneal metastatic implant in a patient with sigmoid neoplasm.

The development of a foreign body granuloma from non-absorbable suture is a relatively uncommon condition, exceptional in the retroperitoneum of patients operated on for colorectal surgery. We report the case of a patient with a history of sigmoid neoplasm showing a retroperitoneal nodule on CT and high activity on PET, mimicking a tumor implant. Pathology found a foreign body granuloma. Foreign body granuloma from suture is a condition that may look identical to tumor relapse or metastatic disease on CT and PET scans, thus requiring pathology confirmation.

Case Report: Acute large bowel obstruction with actinomycosis of the sigmoid colon mimicking neoplasm.

INTRODUCTION: Actinomycosis is an uncommon inflammatory bacterial disease caused by Actinomyces species, especially Actinomyces Israeli. Abdominopelvic forms are relatively rare and may involve the colon as a solid mass, mimicking a malignant tumor. CASE PRESENTATION: A 68-year-old Tunisian man, with a history of diabetes, hypertension, penicillin allergy, and renal failure, presented to the emergency department with abdominal pain, vomiting, and bowel obstruction. CT scan showed an acute intestinal obstruction upstream with obstructive tissular mass at the sigmoid colon. Emergency surgery re

Case Report: Schwannoma of the sigmoid colon: a case report of a rare colonic neoplasm and review of literature.

Background: Schwannomas are tumors originating in Schwann cells of the peripheral nerve system and uncommonly develop in the gastrointestinal tract. Sigmoid colon schwannomas are very rare and only 28 cases have been reported. This study aims to report a case of a sigmoid colon schwannoma and present a literature review. Case report: We report a case of a 66-year-old female with asymptomatic sigmoid colon schwannoma. The patient underwent a screening colonoscopy and about 4cm sized submucosal tumor was identified at the sigmoid colon. A colonoscopic biopsy was performed and the microscopic exa

[Synchronous adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon and multifocal intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm of the pancreas in an elderly patient].

Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms are a well-recognized pathologic entity of the pancreas that is being reported with increasing frequency. These tumours carry a relatively favourable prognosis and are frequently associated with extrapancreatic malignancies. The combination of advanced age and co-existence of two neoplasms challenges the planning of the best treatment option. A 78-year-old man presented with rectal bleeding which led to the diagnosis of a stenosing adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon. No metastatic lesions were present but a 30 mm intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm

Transabdominal Ultrasound Colonography for Detection of Colorectal Neoplasms: Initial Clinical Experience.

We investigated the feasibility of using ultrasound colonography (USC) to visualize the healthy colon and rectum and detect colorectal polyps. Eight healthy volunteers underwent USC after standard bowel preparation. The feasibility and image quality of USC in different segments were evaluated. Then, USC was conducted on eight patients with known colonic neoplasms using colonoscopy as the reference standard. For volunteers, USC examinations were successfully performed on four (50.0%) ascending, three (37.5%) transverse and eight (100%) descending colons, as well as all sigmoid colons and rectum

Clinical significance of diminutive polyps of the rectum and sigmoid colon.

A retrospective review of 637 consecutive colonoscopies with polypectomy in 526 patients was performed to determine the association of small polyps of the rectum and sigmoid colon with more proximal colonic neoplasms. All colonic polyps were proximal to the sigmoid colon in 117 procedures. Proximal neoplasms were found in 32 percent of patients with a single polyp in the rectum or sigmoid colon. The incidence increased to 83 percent for those with three or more polyps. The occurrence of proximal colonic neoplasms was not affected by the size or histologic type of the rectosigmoid polyps. These

Low-Grade Cystic Mucinous Neoplasm of the Colon: A New Entity? Case Report and Review of Literature.

Low-grade cystic mucinous neoplasm of the sigmoid colon has never been previously reported and a classification for such a tumor does not currently exist. Here, we present a case of low-grade cystic mucinous neoplasm of the sigmoid colon and discuss the differential diagnosis especially as it relates to clinical management. Our case is a 68-year-old male who presented with anemia and a history of a lower gastrointestinal tract bleed. He denied abdominal pain and weight loss. A colonoscopy was done for further investigation, and he was found to have a 4-cm nonbleeding submucosal mass in the des

Simultaneous resection of an adenocarcinoma of the cardia and a synchronous adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid: Report of a case.

INTRODUCTION: Adenocarcinoma of the cardia synchronous with other intraabdominal neoplasms is very rare. We report the case of a Siewert type II adenocarcinoma of the cardia synchronous with an adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid both treated simultaneously by transjatal oesophago-gastrectomy and anterior resection of the sigmoid. CASE REPORT: A 62 year-old male was admitted for a progressing dysphagia and weight loss. Oesophago-gastric fibroscopy detected an adenocarcinoma of the cardia extending to the distal 2 cm of the esophagus (Siewert typeII). A CT-scan of the chest and abdomen confirmed the

Synchronous sigmoid and caecal cancers together with a primary renal cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Multiple primary neoplasms, a common clinical entity, can be classified as synchronous or metachronous. Renal cell carcinoma, in particular, is associated with a high rate of multiple primary neoplasms. METHODS: We report a case of a 67-year-old Caucasian woman, who was admitted with history of bleeding per rectum. We conducted a literature review of metachronous and synchronous multiple primary neoplasms. RESULTS: Colonoscopy revealed a 3 cm tumour in the caecum and a small sigmoid tubulovillous polyp. Staging computed tomography showed a non-enhancing mass in the upper pole of

Diverticula, neoplasia, or both? Early detection of carcinoma in sigmoid diverticular disease.

In 105 patients with symptomatic sigmoid diverticular disease, colonoscopy revealed an associated frequency of carcinoma of seven (6.6%) (Dukes A in 4, B in 2, and C in 1) and adenomas in 29 (27.6%), with a peak incidence of 60 to 79 years and an equal sex distribution. In 45 (43%) examinations, the barium enema was inaccurate. The presenting complaints of abdominal pain and/or alteration in bowel habit in 36 patients with neoplasms and 69 without were similar, but significantly more patients with neoplasms complained of rectal bleeding (p less than 0.05). [Carcinoma of the sigmoid colon in an incarcerated inguinal hernia].

Inguinal hernias may contain the small or large bowel. About 10% of inguinal hernias become incarcerated, causing strangulation, bowel obstruction or infarction. Malignant lesions in groin hernias are rare; most intrasaccular neoplasms are colonic, and the most common reported site is the sigmoid colon, usually in a left inguinal hernia. We report a case of an incarcerated inguinal hernia containing carcinoma of the sigmoid colon.

Carcinogenic effect of N-bis(2-hydroxypropyl)nitrosamine by a single administration in rats.

The carcinogenic effect of a single intraperitoneal injection of N-bis)2-hydroxypropyl)nitrosamine (BHP) was studied in male Wistar rats. Lung tumors (adenomas and adenocarcinomas) had the highest incidence (100%). Fewer neoplasms were induced in the thyroid (adenomas and adenocarcinomas, 36%), kidney (renal cell carcinomas, 8%), and the sigmoid colon (adenomas and adenocarcinomas, 9%). No pancreatic neoplasms were found.

Screening for colorectal neoplasia with faecal occult blood testing compared with flexible sigmoidoscopy directly in a 55-56 years' old population.

Reduced mortality from colorectal cancer may be achieved by screening with faecal occult blood testing. Screening for neoplasia in the rectum and sigmoid colon with flexible sigmoidoscopy is suggested to be more effective, particular among persons between 50 and 60 years of age. A cohort of 6367 persons 55-56 years of age were randomised to screening with rehydrated Hemoccult II tests (HII group) or with flexible videosigmoidoscopy directly (FS group). In the HII group 59% (1893/3183) attended, compared to 49% (1353/3184) in the FS group. Of the 1893 persons who attended in the HII group, 4% h
