Signed languages are naturally occurring, fully formed linguistic systems that rely on the movement of the hands, arms, torso, and face within a sign space for production, and are perceived predominantly using visual perception. Despite stark differences in modality and linguistic structure, functional neural organization is strikingly similar to spoken language. Generally speaking, left frontal areas support sign production, and regions in the auditory cortex underlie sign comprehension-despite signers not relying on audition to process language. Given this, should a deaf or hearing signer su

Accessibility of interactive services is vital for building an inclusive society. While accessibility standards are increasingly being adopted, there remains a gap in user experience evaluation approaches tailored to deaf participants. To address this, the User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ) was translated to Slovenian Sign Language (SSL) and its appropriateness and reliability evaluated in a research study. Two interactive TV solutions for deaf viewers were developed and evaluated using a standard written UEQ in Slovenian (UEQ TXT) and a UEQ translated to Slovenian Sign Language (UEQ SSL). A

Signed languages continue to be a key element of deaf education programs that incorporate a bilingual approach to teaching and learning. In order to monitor the success of bilingual deaf education programs, and in particular to monitor the progress of children acquiring signed language, it is essential to develop an assessment tool of signed language skills. Although researchers have developed some checklists and experimental tests related to American Sign Language (ASL) assessment, at this time a standardized measure of ASL does not exist. There have been tests developed in other signed langu

PURPOSE: Sign language research has often been framed as supplementary to spoken language studies. In this article, I argue that sign language research is not only equal in value but also essential to understanding the human language faculty and its disorders.
METHOD: I present three arguments: that sign language reveals phenomena unobservable in speech, enables the testing of otherwise untestable hypotheses, and helps disentangle speech from language.
RESULTS: Drawing on research with deaf children with autism and other language disorders, I demonstrate how signed languages can transform bo

Deaf professionals, whom we term Deaf Language Specialists (DLS), are frequently employed to work with children and young people who have difficulties learning sign language, but there are few accounts of this work in the literature. Through questionnaires and focus groups, 23 DLSs described their work in this area. Deductive thematic analysis was used to identify how this compared to the work of professionals (typically Speech and Language Therapists/Pathologists, SLPs) working with hearing children with difficulties learning spoken language. Inductive thematic analysis resulted in the identi

Bangladeshi Sign Language is a primary means of communication for many Deaf people in Bangladesh, yet communication with non-signers remains difficult. Most existing systems for this language focus on alphabets or a small set of static signs and do not address accurate word-level translation in real time. This work targets that gap. We aim to build a practical sign-to-text pipeline that is accurate, efficient, and reproducible. Concretely, we set four objectives: first, standardize data curation and preprocessing for 102 everyday BdSL words using pose-based features; second, design a compact T

Many language-impaired children rely on telegraphic speech for expression. Functors such as prepositions and pronouns are mostly absent from their utterances. In an experimental analogue to clinical work, 14 3- to 11-year-old children with various levels of language impairment were exposed to drawings portraying a single scene. A meaningful sentence including either a pronoun or a preposition, which the children were not spontaneously using at pretesting, was associated with each drawing. Training the children to use the functors followed one of two approaches. The experimenter either vocalize

This article reviews the history of sign language (SL) and the rationale for its use in children with profound auditory agnosia due to Landau-Kleffner syndrome (LKS), illustrated by studies of children and adults followed for many years and rare cases from the literature. The reasons that SL was successful and brought some children out of isolation while it could not be implemented in others are discussed. The nowadays earlier recognition and treatment of LKS and better awareness of the crucial need to maintain communication have certainly improved the outcome of affected children. Alternative

OBJECTIVE: The British Sign Language Cognitive Screening Test (BSL-CST) is a culturally sensitive and linguistically appropriate tool for deaf BSL signing older adults in the United Kingdom. There are no equivalent tools for Australian Sign Language (Auslan) to ensure diagnostic accuracy for Auslan signers. We aimed to translate/adapt the BSL-CST into Auslan and establish its preliminary psychometric properties.
METHODS: The Auslan-CST was developed through consultation with deaf Auslan signers and Auslan interpreters, informed by evidenced-based translation standards and production guideline

This study examined fingerspelling accuracy and error patterns in deaf American Sign Language (ASL) signers and written spelling in hearing English speakers to investigate how orthographic representations are shaped by phonological, visual, and motor encoding strategies. Deaf participants (n = 39) completed a fingerspelling repetition task, while hearing participants (n = 35) completed a written dictation task using the same word and pseudoword stimuli. While overall accuracy did not differ significantly between groups, deaf participants exhibited qualitatively distinct error patterns, includi

This study examines the experiences of deaf interpreters (DIs), nondeaf interpreters (n-DIs), and deaf conference attendees in International Sign Language (IntSL) conference interpreting contexts. Drawing on ethnographic observations and semi-structured interviews at major international conferences, it examines teamwork, technology use, and professional role negotiation. Reflexive thematic analysis identified 6 themes: teamwork and collaboration, working conditions and logistics, technology and access tools, representation, equity and identity, audience participation and accessibility, and pro

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Communication using sign language (SL) between health care providers (HCPs) and deaf and/or hearing-impaired (DHI) patients was reported to be difficult and oftentimes results in a compromised delivery of quality health care to patients. This study surveyed Saudi health care providers on their perception of SL knowledge on the provision of high-quality care to DHI patients.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional descriptive study among HCPs in different health and primary care centers in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The questionnaire was distributed officially by the Department of S

As of 2025, there is no national sign language in Vanuatu. Sign languages are natural languages that emerge in deaf communities. While studies in the United States have estimated that approximately 95% of deaf children are born into hearing families who do not sign (Mitchell & Karchmer, 2004), there is no equivalent demographic data available for Vanuatu. This highlights a critical evidence gap. Because most deaf children are born into hearing families without signing skills, language acquisition of a language of wider use typically occurs in schools or other gathering places of the deaf commu

While Alois Alzheimer recognized the effects of the disease he described on speech and language in his original description of the disease in 1907, the effects of Alzheimer's disease (AD) on language in deaf signers has not previously been reported. We evaluated a 55-year-old right-handed congenitally deaf woman with a 2-year history of progressive memory loss and a deterioration of her ability to communicate in American Sign Language, which she learned at the age of eight. Examination revealed that she had impaired episodic memory as well as marked impairments in the production and comprehens

The study assessed the frequency of self-reported hand/wrist problems among sign language communicators, including interpreters, deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals, and educators. Comparisons were also made between sign language communicators and the general population regarding the frequency of medically diagnosed carpal tunnel syndrome. A survey was mailed to attendees of a national conference that focused on the quality of postsecondary educational opportunities for students with hearing deficits. Fifty-nine percent of 184 respondents reported experiencing hand/wrist problems. Twenty-six p

Iconicity in sign languages, visually motivated relationships between form and meaning, is closely tied to transparency, or the guessability of meaning based on its form. Yet, how to best measure this relationship remains contentious. This study compares iconicity ratings and transparency scores for 1412 lexical signs in Dutch Sign Language (Nederlandse Gebarentaal, NGT) across deaf NGT signers and Dutch and German non-signers. In this paper, we show that iconicity is perceived differently by the different groups of raters and replicate past findings that signers perceive signs from their own

Sign languages differ dramatically from spoken languages in their linguistic articulators (the hands/face vs. the vocal tract) and in how they are perceived (visually vs. auditorily), which can impact how they are processed in the brain. This review focuses on the neural network involved in sign language comprehension, from processing the initial visual input to parsing meaningful sentences. We describe how the signer's brain decodes the visual signed signal into distinct and linguistically relevant representations (e.g., handshapes and movements) primarily in occipital and posterior temporal
