British journal of psychology (London, England : 1953)2013eng
Both psychological stress and predictive signals relating to expected sensory input are believed to influence perception, an influence which, when disrupted, may contribute to the generation of auditory hallucinations. The effect of stress and semantic expectation on auditory perception was therefore examined in healthy participants using an auditory signal detection task requiring the detection of speech from within white noise. Trait anxiety was found to predict the extent to which stress influenced response bias, resulting in more anxious participants adopting a more liberal criterion, and

BACKGROUND: Multi-cancer detection (MCED) blood tests have the potential to screen for early-stage cancers. Understanding how people experience an MCED cancer signal result is vital prior to any future implementation. We explored experiences in a trial context.
METHODS: A subset of 41 participants in the NHS-Galleri trial (NCT05611632), with a cancer signal detected result, were interviewed. We selected: 20 participants with cancer found (self-reported) and 21 without cancer (following tests). Transcripts were analysed thematically.
RESULTS: Expectations of cancer played a pivotal role in em

Mandler (1980) provided the classic "butcher on the bus" example illustrating the feeling of familiarity without recollection that may arise when an acquaintance is encountered in an unusual context. We studied this phenomenon by pairing photos of faces with photos of distinctive contexts at study and later testing recognition memory and remember/know judgments for faces presented with studied, switched, or new contexts. Estimates of recollection and familiarity, based on the assumption that these processes are independent, showed that switching contexts significantly lowered recollection whil

Levi et al. (2021) critique the concept of everyday amnesia (high confident misses) by arguing that these are simply due to criterion shifts within a signal detection framework. We agree that signal detection figures can be drawn to conceptualize the results, but we argue such efforts merely provide a re-description of the phenomenon without explaining it. For that, one would need a process theory. Signal detection theory represents an elegant framework for conceiving of issues in decision making, but not for explaining mechanisms underlying them. A signal detection figure can be created for a

Auditory-verbal signal detection tasks (AV-SDTs) are used to study hallucinatory experiences (HEs) in clinical and nonclinical groups, assessing perceptual decision making under ambiguous auditory conditions. Existing findings suggest that HEs are associated with response biases. However, effects sizes and subgroup differences remain unclear. This meta-analysis synthesized findings to quantify associations between HEs and AV-SDT performance, testing differences within clinical and nonclinical populations. Systematic searches identified studies published between January 1985 and April 2025. Ref

Signal detection theory (SDT) has long provided the field of psychology with a simple but powerful model of how observers make decisions under uncertainty. SDT can distinguish sensitivity from response bias and characterize optimal decision strategies. Whereas classical SDT pertains to "type 1" judgments about the world, recent work has extended SDT to quantify sensitivity for metacognitive or "type 2" judgments about one's own type 1 processing, e.g. confidence ratings. Here we further advance the application of SDT to the study of metacognition by providing a formal account of normative meta

The dual-process theory of recognition memory holds that recognition decisions can be based on recollection or familiarity, and the remember/know procedure is widely used to investigate those 2 processes. Dual-process theory in general and the remember/know procedure in particular have been challenged by an alternative strength-based interpretation based on signal-detection theory, which holds that remember judgments simply reflect stronger memories than do know judgments. Although supported by a considerable body of research, the signal-detection account is difficult to reconcile with G. Mand

Theorizing about how people perform any cognitive information-processing task typically takes the form of proposing a modular model of the cognitive system that people use to accomplish that task. Some of these models are stage models; many are not. In particular, models in which the passage of information from one module to another is cascaded rather than discrete are currently very popular, but these by definition are not stage models. The additive factor method as described by Sternberg (2011) is designed specifically for working with stage models. How useful is it for theorists whose model

This study replicated the effect of Wickless and Kirsch's experiential expectancy manipulation, in which lights and music from hidden sources were used to convince participants that they were responding successfully to suggestions for visual and auditory hallucinations. The hypothesis that the effect is mediated by detection of the manipulation was tested by providing some participants with cues that their experiences were due to actual changes in the physical environment rather than to their responses to suggestion. This hypothesis was not confirmed. A significant effect on suggestibility was

Memory is susceptible to illusions in the form of false memories. Prior research found, however, that sad moods reduce false memories. The current experiment had two goals: (1) to determine whether affect influences retrieval processes, and (2) to determine whether affect influences the strength and the persistence of false memories. Happy or sad moods were induced either before or after learning word lists designed to produce false memories. Control groups did not experience a mood induction. We found that sad moods reduced false memories only when induced before learning. Signal detection an

It is sometimes suggested that reaction time (RT) distributions have the same shape across conditions or groups. In this note we show that this is highly unlikely if the RT is the sum of the stochastically independent durations of 2 or more stages (sequential processes) (a) that are influenced selectively by different factors, or (b) 1 of which is influenced selectively by some factor. We provide an example of substantial shape differences in RT data from a flash-detection experiment, data that have been shown to satisfy requirement (a). Ignoring these requirements, we also note that in a larg

It is natural to see conscious perceptions as typically bringing with them a degree of confidence about what is perceived. So one might also expect such confidence not to occur if a perception is not conscious. This has resulted in the use of confidence as a test or measure of consciousness, one that may be more reliable and fine-grained than the traditional appeal to subjective report as a test for a perception's being conscious. The following describes theoretical difficulties for the use of confidence as a reliable test for consciousness, which show that confidence is less reliable than sub

Many recent findings suggest that human observers are surprisingly "blind" to changes in visual displays, failing to notice when substantial scene elements are added, subtracted, or altered in successive presentations of the scene. But observers are far more sensitive to certain visual changes than others, and we suggest that which types of changes enjoy differential sensitivity can reveal a great deal about the underlying visual representations. In this study, we investigate how the human visual system represents the shape of objects by demonstrating a previously unknown influence on detectio

BACKGROUND: Cognitive models have postulated that auditory hallucinations arise from the misattribution of internally generated cognitive events to external sources. Several experimental paradigms have been developed to assess this externalizing bias in clinical and non-clinical hallucination-prone samples, including source-monitoring, verbal self-monitoring and auditory signal detection tasks. This meta-analysis aims to synthesize the wealth of empirical findings from these experimental studies.
METHOD: A database search was carried out for reports between January 1985 and March 2012. Additi

Expectations broadly influence our experience of the world. However, the process by which they are acquired and then shape our sensory experiences is not well understood. Here, we examined whether expectations of simple stimulus features can be developed implicitly through a fast statistical learning procedure. We found that participants quickly and automatically developed expectations for the most frequently presented directions of motion and that this altered their perception of new motion directions, inducing attractive biases in the perceived direction as well as visual hallucinations in t

OBJECTIVE: The aim is to establish the extent to which the high false-alarm rate of air traffic control midair conflict alerts is responsible for a "cry wolf' effect-where true alerts are not responded to and all alerts are delayed in their response.
BACKGROUND: Some aircraft collisions have been partly attributed to the cry wolf effect, and in other domains (health care and systems monitoring), there is a causal connection between false-alarm rate and cry wolf behavior. We hypothesized that a corresponding relationship exists in air traffic control (ATC).
METHOD: Aircraft track and alert sy

In a context of increasing political polarization, ideological bias poses a challenge to evidence-based reasoning and the evaluation of factual information. However, its systematic study is hindered by the lack of reliable and valid measurement tools and by the frequent conflation of ideological bias with ideological stance. Addressing this gap, we introduce the Ideological Bias Expression (IBE) scale, a novel measure grounded in signal detection theory that disentangles discrimination accuracy from ideological bias in individuals' evaluations of evidence. Across two studies using German sampl

Recognition memory refers to the process of distinguishing between previously experienced and novel events. Apart from the objective quality of stored memories, recognition depends on the retrieval context produced by all items (foils) presented together with actually memorized targets and causing confusion. Memory models often conceptualize target-foil confusability via distances in psychological spaces where greater confusability originates from shorter interitem distances. We tested whether recognition spaces change when other foils are added to the retrieval context or when target memory s
