Signal-to-noise ratio of chemosensory event-related potentials.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the influence of the number of stimuli on signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio of CSERP. METHODS: CSERP from 20 normosmic subjects were obtained in response to stimulation with two olfactory (H(2)S and PEA) and a trigeminal (CO(2)) stimulant. For each of these odors, 160 stimuli were delivered into the right nostril (duration 200ms, mean ISI 30s) using a constant-flow, air-dilution olfactometer. For each EEG recording site (Fz, Cz, Pz, C3, C4), peak-to-peak amplitude N1P2 and noise amplitude levels were determined. Subsequently, S/N ratios were calculated. RESULTS: The S/N

Adaptive Signal-to-Noise Ratio Indicator for Wearable Bioimpedance Monitoring.

Bioimpedance monitoring is an increasingly important non-invasive technique for assessing physiological parameters such as body composition, hydration levels, heart rate, and breathing. However, sensor signals obtained from real-world experimental conditions invariably contain noise, which can significantly degrade the reliability of the derived quantities. Therefore, it is crucial to evaluate the quality of measured signals to ensure accurate physiological parameter values. In this study, we present a novel wrist-worn wearable device for bioimpedance monitoring, and propose a method for estim

Modeling signal-to-noise ratio of otoacoustic emissions in workers exposed to different industrial noise levels.

INTRODUCTION: Noise is considered as the most common cause of harmful physical effects in the workplace. A sound that is generated from within the inner ear is known as an otoacoustic emission (OAE). Distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) assess evoked emission and hearing capacity. The aim of this study was to assess the signal-to-noise ratio in different frequencies and at different times of the shift work in workers exposed to various levels of noise. It was also aimed to provide a statistical model for signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of OAEs in different frequencies based on the two

Time-windowing of click-evoked otoacoustic emissions to increase signal-to-noise ratio.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of decreasing the response-window duration on the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of click-evoked otoacoustic emissions (CEOAEs). DESIGN: The ILO88 (Otodynamics, Ltd.) was used to measure CEOAEs from 149 normal adult ears, and 75 adult ears with high-frequency sensorineural hearing loss. Data were collected using the default response window of 2.5 to 20.5 msec post-click. Each response was rewindowed, post-hoc, from 2.5 to 7.5 msec, 2.5 to 9 msec, 7.75 to 14.25 msec, and 13 to 19.5 msec post-click. For each window, spectra of the CEOAE and of the background n

Dopamine suppresses pathological retinal oscillations and enhances the signal-to-noise ratio.

Infantile nystagmus is a debilitating involuntary eye movement disorder often associated with retinal diseases such as congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB). The oscillating eye movements of infantile nystagmus come with reduced visual acuity and strongly impair quality of life. No cure exists for this condition. Previously, we demonstrated that nystagmus in the CSNB mouse model Nyxnob has a retinal cause. Specifically, we found that synchronized oscillations of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) are transmitted to the accessory optic system, triggering compensatory eye movements. The RGC os

Research on automatic segmentation method of microseismic monitoring signal under low signal-to-noise ratio conditions.

To address the issues of reduced microseismic signal detection accuracy and difficulty in identifying event boundaries under low signal-to-noise ratio conditions, we propose SEU-Net, an automatic microseismic signal segmentation model that integrates a Squeeze-and-Excitation (SE) attention mechanism. This model embeds an SE module within the U-Net encoder, which enhances feature responses related to microseismic event boundaries through adaptive re-scaling of channel features. Simultaneously, it employs a temporal signal dimension expansion method to convert one-dimensional waveforms into an i

Practicality of wavelength selection to improve signal-to-noise ratio in near-infrared spectroscopy.

Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), which can be used to detect changes in the concentration of oxygenated hemoglobin (oxy-Hb) and deoxygenated hemoglobin (deoxy-Hb) in tissue by using illumination at two different wavelengths, is often applied to noninvasive measurements of human brain functions. It is common to use two wavelengths that are on opposite sides of the point where the optical absorptions of oxy- and deoxy-Hb are equal (about 800 nm) but an optimal wavelength pair has not yet been determined. In this study, we conducted simultaneous recordings at five wavelengths (678, 692, 750, 78

NMDA antagonists recreate signal-to-noise ratio and timing perturbations present in schizophrenia.

RATIONALE: There is increasing evidence that functional deficits in schizophrenia may be driven by a reduction in the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and consistent timing of neural signals. This study examined the extent to which exposure to the NMDA receptor antagonists ketamine and MK801, frequently used pharmacological models of schizophrenia, recreate deficits in electrophysiological markers of disturbed brain circuits that are thought to underlie the illness. Furthermore, this study characterizes the specificity of these differences across the frequency spectrum so as to help identify the na

Signal-to-noise ratio improvement in postmortem MRI using deep learning reconstruction (SwiftMR).

Postmortem imaging has become an essential modality for death investigation, with computed tomography (PMCT) being widely adopted as a rapid and objective screening tool. However, the application of postmortem magnetic resonance imaging (PMMRI) remains limited in routine forensic practice, primarily due to the longer acquisition time and the need for high-quality images under time constraints. SwiftMR™ (AIRS Medical, Seoul, Korea) is a deep learning-based reconstruction software designed to enhance MR image quality through denoising and multi-dimensional k-space optimization, allowing improved

The effect of sound level and signal-to-noise ratio on adaptation to noise in spectral and temporal modulation detection.

Adaptation to noise is the improvement in auditory function as the signal of interest is delayed in the noise. Previous research has shown that adaptation to noise occurs in the detection of temporal and spectral modulations when these modulations occur separately but not when they occur simultaneously. The aim of the present study was to investigate if adaptation to noise in spectral and temporal modulation detection depends on the signal level or on the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The signal was a 200-ms spectrally (2 cycles/oct) or temporally (10 Hz) modulated ripple noise embedded in whit

Effect of signal to noise ratio on the speech perception ability of older adults.

BACKGROUND: Speech perception ability depends on auditory and extra-auditory elements. The signal- to-noise ratio (SNR) is an extra-auditory element that has an effect on the ability to normally follow speech and maintain a conversation. Speech in noise perception difficulty is a common complaint of the elderly. In this study, the importance of SNR magnitude as an extra-auditory effect on speech perception in noise was examined in the elderly. METHODS: The speech perception in noise test (SPIN) was conducted on 25 elderly participants who had bilateral low-mid frequency normal hearing thresho

[Discrimination and critical signal to noise ratio of normal and pathological hearing (author's transl)].

With reference to the cocktail party situation the selective hearing of normal and pathological hearing was examined during a period of monaural or binaural noise representation. To describe the physiological situation we modified the physical definition of the signal to noise ratio adding the word "critical". Procedure of examination: Hearing level and speech intensity for maximum discrimination of numbers, monosyllables and sentences was evaluated. The speech intensity level defined by these measurements was fixed while the noise level was raised till speech discrimination was reduced to 35-

Signal to noise ratio of masticatory muscle activity of functional and non-functional oral tasks.

BACKGROUND: Electromyographic activity (EMG) of masticatory muscles during wakefulness is understudied. It is unclear if single channel ambulatory EMG devices are sensitive enough to detect masticatory muscle activity (MMA) during wakefulness. OBJECTIVES: To compare the MMA of various oral tasks recorded with a single channel EMG device ((Grindcare4-datalogger Prototype device) (GC4-β)) and a conventional EMG (cEMG) device. METHODS: EMG activity of 30 standardised oral tasks was recorded unilaterally from the masseter and anterior temporalis muscle in 24 healthy volunteers using GC4-β and a

Signal-to-Noise Ratio Effects Frontoparietal Network Lateralization: Electroencephalogram Evidence in Underwater Auditory Target Recognition.

Accurately recognizing auditory targets within background interference remains challenging at a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Using an oddball paradigm, this electroencephalogram study investigated the impact of SNR (0, -10, and -20 dB) on psychophysiological processes underlying underwater auditory target recognition in twenty normal-hearing participants. Reduced SNR impaired the N1-P2 component and led to P300 variations, with delayed latencies (N1: p = 0.0355; P300: p = 0.0075) and reduced amplitudes (P2: p = 0.0075; P300: p = 0.0277), indicating increased attentional demands. Denoising method for Raman spectra with low signal-to-noise ratio based on feature extraction.

Raman spectroscopy is a non-destructive technique utilizing lasers to observe scattered light in order to determine things such as vibrational modes in the molecular system. A major problem inherent to this technique is that due to their short exposure time and the low power of the excitation laser, Raman signals are very weak. They tend to be much weaker than the noise and can even be drowned out. Conventional denoising methods are currently unable to extract Raman peaks with precision so it is necessary to specifically study Raman signal extraction methods that involve a low signal-to-noise

A signal-to-noise ratio model for the speech-reception threshold of the hearing impaired.

This paper reviews the results of a series of investigations inspired by a model of the speech-reception threshold (SRT) of hearing-impaired listeners. The model contains two parameters accounting for the SRT of normal-hearing listeners (SRT in quiet and signal-to-noise ratio corresponding to the threshold at high noise levels), two parameters describing the hearing loss (attenuation and threshold elevation in terms of signal-to-noise ratio), and three parameters describing the hearing aid (acoustic gain, threshold elevation expressed in signal-to-noise ratio, and equivalent internal noise lev

Improving spatial accuracy and signal-to-noise ratio through Babinet-principle-based coherent amplitude modulation imaging.

A Babinet-principle-based coherent amplitude modulation imaging (BP-CAMI) method is proposed for accurate illumination characterization. It employs a random amplitude plate and a complementary constraint derived from the Babinet principle, establishing a dual-constraint framework that provides algorithmic rather than hardware redundancy. This approach effectively suppresses noise and artifacts during phase retrieval. Simulations and experiments on biomedical samples, resolution targets, and phase objects confirm substantial improvements in signal-to-noise ratio and spatial accuracy over conven

Synchronized Spontaneous Otoacoustic Emissions Provide a Signal-to-Noise Ratio Advantage in Medial-Olivocochlear Reflex Assays.

Detection of medial olivocochlear-induced (MOC) changes to transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) requires high signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). TEOAEs associated with synchronized spontaneous (SS) OAEs exhibit higher SNRs than TEOAEs in the absence of SSOAEs, potentially making the former well suited for MOC assays. Although SSOAEs may complicate interpretation of MOC-induced changes to TEOAE latency, recent work suggests SSOAEs are not a problem in non-latency-dependent MOC assays. The current work examined the potential benefit of SSOAEs in TEOAE-based assays of the MOC efferents. It w

Nanozymes-on-a-Bubble with High Signal-to-Noise Ratio Peroxidase-like Activity for Colorimetric Sensing.

Nanozyme-based colorimetric sensors have shown their immense potential in environmental monitoring and pharmaceutical quality control. However, achieving interference-free, high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and portable detection of the analyte using these sensors remains challenging because their compatibility with multiple optical paths has long been constrained by their inherent dispersibility and optical properties. To address this challenge, we here engineered a multifunctional bubble-scaffolded alloy nanozyme sensor. By leveraging the Hg2+-stimulated peroxidase-like catalytic activity on
