Biological and therapeutic effects of ortho-silicic acid and some ortho-silicic acid-releasing compounds: New perspectives for therapy.

Silicon (Si) is the most abundant element present in the Earth's crust besides oxygen. However, the exact biological roles of silicon remain unknown. Moreover, the ortho-silicic acid (H4SiO4), as a major form of bioavailable silicon for both humans and animals, has not been given adequate attention so far. Silicon has already been associated with bone mineralization, collagen synthesis, skin, hair and nails health atherosclerosis, Alzheimer disease, immune system enhancement, and with some other disorders or pharmacological effects. Beside the ortho-silicic acid and its stabilized formulations

Harnessing Silicene-to-Silicic Acid Conversion for Organelle-Specific Silica Deposition in Tumor Therapy.

Inducing localized mineralized lesions offers a promising drug-free strategy for tumor suppression, yet calcium-phosphate systems are limited by slow crystallization, high ion requirements, and poor organelle specificity. Here, we develop a silicene-derived nanoplatform that serves as an "inorganic silicic acid reservoir", enabling controlled, organelle-specific biosilicification for cancer therapy. Silicene nanosheets are sequentially engineered with tannic acid and PEI-anchored triphenylphosphonium (TPTS), conferring high colloidal stability, efficient endosomal escape, and selective mitocho

In vitro tolerability of soluble silicic acid and tetraethyl orthosilicate in ocular epithelial cells.

Biodegradable silica microparticles (SiMPs) are a promising carrier matrix for controlled ocular drug delivery. In tissues, SiMPs degrade into silicic acid (SiA), a soluble inorganic weak acid. This study evaluated the in vitro toxicity and tolerability of SiA and SiMPs' precursor, tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), in human corneal epithelial cells (HCE-2) and retinal pigment epithelial cells (ARPE-19). Cells were exposed to serial dilutions of SiA and TEOS. Cell viability was assessed after 24, 48, and 72 h using the alamarBlue assay, while membrane integrity was analyzed through LDH release.

Quantitative determination of cardiolipin in mitochondrial electron transferring complexes by silicic acid high-performance liquid chromatography.

Quantitative determination of cardiolipin from two mitochondrial electron-transferring complexes was achieved using a rapid and sensitive silicic acid HPLC method combined with digital analysis of the elution profile. Phospholipid samples containing as little as 0. 01 nmol of cardiolipin were accurately analyzed. Phospholipids from detergent-solubilized cytochrome bc1 (EC 1.10.2.2) and cytochrome c oxidase (EC 1.9.3.1) were extracted by an organic two-phase system and analyzed by isocratic normal-phase HPLC after dissolving the dried sample in the mobile phase (cyclohexane:2-propanol:5 mM phos

Comparison of the effects of silicic acid, organosilicon and Nano-silicon on rice cell wall phosphorus.

Phosphorus is crucial for plant growth, but its deficiency is a global issue. can relieve plant phosphorus deficiency, yet the impacts and mechanisms of different silicon materials remain unclear. Here, we first showed a negative correlation between leaf silicon and cell wall phosphate among 14 rice varieties. Subsequently, we compared the effects of three silicon materials: inorganic silicon (silicic acid), organosilicon (ethoxy-modified polytrisiloxane) and Nano-silicon on rice growth and explored the underlying mechanism from the perspective of cell wall. Inorganic silicon can increase the

Inhibition of acid rock drainage with iron-silicate or phosphate film: in rainy and submerged environments.

Iron phosphate-based coating and iron silicate-based coating were used to inhibit the oxidation of sulfide minerals in rainy and submerged environments. The inhibiting effectiveness of coating agents on the oxidation of iron sulfide minerals was investigated using pyrite and rock samples resulting from acid drainage. The film formed with both surface-coating agents was identified by pyrite surface analysis. It was also confirmed that the formation of coatings varies depending on the crystallographic orientation. The inhibitory effects under rainy and submerged conditions were investigated usin

Ortho-silicic Acid Prevents Glucocorticoid-Induced Femoral Head Necrosis by Promoting Akt Phosphorylation to Inhibit Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress-Mediated Apoptosis and Enhance Angiogenesis and Osteogenesis.

Glucocorticoid-induced osteonecrosis of the femoral head (SONFH) is the most prevalent form of secondary osteonecrosis affecting the femoral head. Glucocorticoids can cause damage to both vascular endothelial cells and osteoblasts. Previous studies have demonstrated that silicon can improve the resistance of vascular endothelial cells to oxidative stress and positively impact bone health. However, the impact of silicon on SONFH has yet to be investigated. We examined the influence of ortho-silicic acid (OSA, Si(OH)4) on the apoptosis and proliferation of vascular endothelial cells after glucoc

Interlayer Modification of a Layered Silicate RUB-18 with 4-Phosphonophenylsilane and Its Surface Acidic Functions.

The interlayer silylation of a layered silicate H-RUB-18 (Si4O7(OH)2) using a new aromatic silylating reagent containing a phosphonic acid group (4-phosphonophenylsilane: PPS) was demonstrated (H-PPS-RUB-18). The phosphonic acid groups were attached to the silicate layers through the reaction of H-RUB-18 with (4-diethoxyphosphorylphenyl)-triethoxysilane (p-PPS-E), and the ester moieties were subsequently hydrolyzed with hydrochloric acid. H-PPS-RUB-18 is a solid acid, as indicated by the intercalation of various alkylamines and the catalytic acetalization of ketones. A systematic increase in i
