Emerging advancements in anticancer drug discovery research are leaning towards the plant-based bioactive fractions, which is a cocktail of naturally abundant two or more substances with unique proportions, exhibiting greater potential to combat cancers than the individual molecules. Thus, isolation and characterization of anti-cancer activity enriched fractions from plants is gaining scientific attention. Consistent with this view, one of the evidence-based traditional medicinal plants, well known for its anti-cancer potential, Simarouba glauca (SG) leaf has been scientifically examined to id

The study explored Simarouba glauca DC. for mosquito larvicidal potential by performing bioactivity-guided chemical investigation of its root extract resulting in isolation of the known bioactive metabolite glaucarubinone (1). Mosquito larvicidal activity of glaucarubinone (1) against the three vector species viz. Anopheles stephensi, Aedes aegypti, and Culex quinquefasciatus was determined using a modified WHO 2005 protocol. It was observed that Culex quinquefasciatus larvae were the most susceptible species with LC50 13.88 ppm and LC90 70.01 ppm followed by Aedes aegypti and Anopheles stephe

Species of the genus Simarouba have been studied because of their antimalarial and antileukemic activities. A group of oxygenated terpenes called quassinoids have been isolated from species of the Simarouba genus, and are responsible for its therapeutic properties. We hypothesized that Simarouba tulae, an endemic plant from Puerto Rico, is a natural source rich in quassinoid compounds with anticancer activity. The leaves were processed and extracted with solvents of different polarities. The extracts were screened for their antiproliferative activity, and it was shown that the chloroform extra

Simarouba glauca has been widely reported to be effective against a number of diseases and possesses medicinal benefits. Thus, the study was conducted to evaluate the toxic effect of aqueous leaf extract of Simarouba glauca (AESG) on relevant organs of male Wistar rats. The oral acute toxicity of AESG was evaluated according to the method described by Lorke. Sub-chronic toxicity of AESG was carried out in line with the guidelines of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), using a total of twenty-four (24) male Wistar rats divided into four groups of six rats each. Simarouba amara (known in Brazilian Portuguese as "marupá") and S. versicolor (known in Brazilian Portuguese as "pé-de-perdiz") are Neotropical species belonging to the family Simaroubaceae. These species have historically been used in folk medicine to treat conditions such as malaria, cancer, helminthiasis, viral infections, gastritis, ulcers, diarrhea, and diabetes. Recent advances in high-throughput sequencing (HTS) technologies have improved the acquisition of genomic datasets for economically wild species. This genomics data enables the development of microsatellite markers (SSR), which a

Two male Labrador retrievers developed bleeding erosions/ulcerations involving the oral mucosa, mucocutaneous junctions of the lips, nose, prepuce and anus, ulcerated nodules on the chin, and crusting lesions on the elbows, hocks and scrotum. One of the dogs was anorexic and depressed, had haematological abnormalities consistent with damage to the liver and signs of neurological disease. As these dogs had recently been exposed to bedding containing Simarouba amara shavings and because of the striking similarities of clinical signs to those described for horses, a probable diagnosis of wood poi

Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) infection is a major cause of death in children under the age of five in developing countries. ETEC (O78:H11:CFA/I:LT+:ST+) mechanism has been studied in detail with either heat labile (LT) or heat stable (ST) toxins using in vitro and in vivo models. However, there is no adequate information on ETEC pathogenesis producing both the toxins (LT, ST) in BALB/c mice model. In this study, female mice have been employed to understand ETEC H10407 infection induced changes in physiology, biochemical and immunological patterns up to seven days post-infection and

While anticancer properties of Simarouba glauca (SG, commonly known as Paradise tree) are well documented in ancient literature, the underlying mechanisms leading to cancer cell death begin to emerge very recently. The leaves of SG have been used as potential source of anticancer agents in traditional medicine. Recently attempts have been made to isolate anticancer agents from the leaves of SG using solvent extraction, which identified quassinoids as the molecules with tumoricidal activity. However, it is not known whether the anti-cancer potential of SG leaves is just because of quassinoids a

Gastrointestinal disorders are important causes of morbidity in developing countries. Natural healing is the traditional way of treating these diseases in Guatemala. Ethnobotanical surveys and literature reviews showed that 385 plants from 95 families are used in Guatemala for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders. The activity of 84 of the most commonly used plants was screened in vitro against five enterobacteria pathogenic to man (enteropathogenic Escherichia coli, Salmonella enteritidis, Salmonella typhi, Shigella dysenteriae and Shigella flexneri). Results indicate that 34 (40.48%)

Intestinal helminthiasis is a neglected disease that affects a significant portion of the global population, specifically in developing countries, where medicinal plants are widely used for therapeutic purposes. With the purpose to identify the native species used in traditional Brazilian medicine for the management of helminthiasis, ethnopharmacological books edited in Brazil documenting the folk use of medicinal plants were analyzed. The native species cited in at least three studies were selected, and bibliographic research was performed using electronic databases to identify their scientif

BACKGROUND: Sustainable micronutrient management is vital for early crop establishment in legumes, as conventional molybdenum fertilizers often exhibit low bioavailability during early growth stages. In legumes, molybdenum plays an important role in nitrogen fixation and root nodule functioning through nitrogenase and nitrate reductase enzymes. Therefore, phytochemical-mediated molybdenum-based nanoparticles were synthesized and evaluated as a seed treatment for improving seedling vigour and early establishment of greengram (Vigna radiata L.) during 2024-2025 at the Department of Agronomy, Uni
