Quassia amara L., a neotropical forest shrub of the Simaroubaceae family, is widely used in Caribbean folk medicine and in some northern states of Brazil for the treatment of gastric ulcers. This plant is a source of numerous compounds including both beta-carbonile and cantin-6 alkaloids as well as, primarily, the bitter compounds known as quassinoids. We analyzed the possible antiulcerogenic activities of four extracts of different polarities: 70% ethanol (70% EtOH), 100% EtOH, 100% dichloromethane (DCM), and 100% hexane (HEX) obtained from Quassia amara bark. All extracts, administered at do

BACKGROUND: Botanical and microbial insecticides have been increasingly used for the control of mosquito given their efficacy and documented nontoxic effects on non-target organisms. The discovery of new insecticides is imperative because of the development of resistance by the mosquitoes to the readily available insecticides. The aim of this study was therefore to isolate and characterize compounds from a local medicinal plant, Quassia africana Baill and Baill (Simaroubaceae) that were toxic to Anopheles gambiae.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The methanol extracts of the leaves, stem and roots of Qu

This article presents two types of phytochemical data obtained from Brucea javanica (L.) Merr. roots, a medicinal plant belonging to the Simaroubaceae family. The high-resolution LC-MS dataset comprised the chemical profile of dichloromethane extract, which was utilised to annotate 35 chemical constituents. For annotations, the measured spectral data were compared with the in-silico spectral data generated from 920 molecular structures previously reported in Simaroubaceae. Indole alkaloids, quassinoids, aliphatics and lignan were the chemical groups identified in the root extract. The second d

BACKGROUND: Malaria is an infectious disease caused by parasites of the genus Plasmodium, of which Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum are the major species that cause the disease in humans. As there are relatively few alternatives for malaria treatment, it is necessary to search for new chemotherapeutic options. Colombia possesses a great diversity of plants, which are potential sources of new compounds of medical interest. Thus, in this study the antiplasmodial effect of extracts from two species of plants from the families Simaroubaceae and Picramniaceae (Picramnia latifolia and Picr

Brucea javanica (L.) Merr. (Simaroubaceae) is a widely recognized medicinal plant in traditional Chinese medicine, noted for its rich variety of structurally diverse secondary metabolites. As part of our ongoing phytochemical investigation on the fruits of this species, three undescribed indole alkaloids, named Yadanziindoles A-C (1-3), were isolated and identified. Their structures were elucidated based on extensive spectroscopic data (HRESIMS, 1D and 2D NMR). Structurally, compounds 1 and 2 feature a C-2 2-hydroxypropan-2-yl substituent and differ in the oxidation state of the C-3 functional

Simarouba amara (known in Brazilian Portuguese as "marupá") and S. versicolor (known in Brazilian Portuguese as "pé-de-perdiz") are Neotropical species belonging to the family Simaroubaceae. These species have historically been used in folk medicine to treat conditions such as malaria, cancer, helminthiasis, viral infections, gastritis, ulcers, diarrhea, and diabetes. Recent advances in high-throughput sequencing (HTS) technologies have improved the acquisition of genomic datasets for economically wild species. This genomics data enables the development of microsatellite markers (SSR), which a

The oncogenic transcription factor c-Maf has been proposed as an ideal therapeutic target for multiple myeloma (MM), a not-yet-curable malignancy of plasma cells. In the present study, we establish a c-Maf-based luciferase screen system and apply it to screen a homemade library composed of natural products from which bruceine B (BB) is identified to display potent antimyeloma activity. BB is a key ingredient isolated from the Chinese traditional medicinal plant Brucea javanica (L.) Merr. (Simaroubaceae). BB inhibits MM cell proliferation and induces MM cell apoptosis in a caspase-3-dependent m
