The effect of illumination of the malic acid content and anion/cation balance of mustard leaves (Sinapis alba).

1. Mustard plants have been grown under conditions in which the length of artificial day could be controlled. 2. Leaf samples were analysed for malic acid and citric acid, and for a number of inorganic anions and cations. A simple method is described by which sap was obtained from 0.5g. samples of leaves. 3. In days of 16hr. or more, malic acid was accumulated; the chief cation accumulated was calcium. 4. When the day-length was reduced the malic acid content decreased considerably but the calcium content remained the same. There was little change in the pH value of the sap, the balance of ani

Characterization of five new low-molecular-mass trypsin inhibitors from white mustard (Sinapis alba L.) seed.

Five new low-molecular-mass trypsin inhibitors belonging to the RTI/MTI-2 family were identified from white mustard (Sinapis alba L. ; MTI-2) seed. Purified MTI-2 consisted of a peptide mixture, displaying Ile or Arg at position 43, Trp or kynurenine (Kyn) at position 44, and C-terminal ragged ends. The occurrence of Ile or Arg at position 43 suggested that MTI-2 inhibitors originated from different genes. The presence of 5-oxo-proline (pyroglutamic acid; 5-oxoPro1) and Kyn44 reflected post-translational processing of the serine proteinase inhibitor. MTI-2 showed approximately 70% amino-acid i

Toxic Effects of Single Antibiotics and Antibiotics in Combination on Germination and Growth of Sinapis alba L.

Antibiotics enter agro-ecosystems via the application of farmyard manure, sewage sludge, animal by-products, or digestates. There are many open questions regarding the behavior of such compounds in the soil like their adsorption, degradation, half-life, and their effects on soil organisms and plants. The impact of antibiotics on the development of antibiotic resistance genes in the environment is regarded as the most important effect that endangers the environment as well as human health. Nevertheless, direct plant toxicity, especially of different antibiotics and heavy metals at the same time

Draft genome of multiple resistance donor plant Sinapis alba: An insight into SSRs, annotations and phylogenetics.

BackgroundSinapis alba is a wild member of the Brassicaceae family reported to possess genetic resistance against major biotic and abiotic stresses of oilseed brassicas. However, the resistance nature of S. alba was not exploited generously due to the unavailability of usable genome sequences in public databases. Therefore, the present study was conducted to assemble the first draft genome from raw whole genome shotgun sequences with annotation and develop simple sequence repeat markers for molecular genetics and marker-assisted breeding.ResultsThe raw genome sequences had 96x coverage on the

Functional analysis of the promoter of a glycosyl hydrolase gene induced in resistant Sinapis alba by Alternaria brassicicola.

A putative family 3 glycosyl hydrolase (GH) gene showed significant differential expression in resistant Sinapis alba, compared with the susceptible Brassica juncea, as part of the initial responses during interaction with the necrotroph Alternaria brassicicola. To understand the mechanism of induction, the promoter was isolated and deletion analysis carried out. All the promoter fragments were fused with the β-glucuronidase gene and the expressions were studied in stable B. juncea transgenics and transiently transformed Nicotiana tabacum. Analysis of the expression of the promoter showed the

Improving benzyl - isothiocyanate bioaccessibility in white mustard (Sinapis alba) sauce through spray - drying microencapsulation and Pickering emulsions.

This study compared the bioaccessibility and behaviour of different formulations of benzyl - isothiocyanate (benzyl - ITC) prepared using different approaches and the INFOGEST in vitro digestion protocol. The aim was to improve the low bioaccessibility of this bioactive compound caused by its lipophilic properties. Spray-dried microparticles were prepared using a matrix of either mannitol or maltodextrin, and compared with Pickering emulsions produced with cellulose nanofibres. The different systems were characterised and their ability to associate benzyl - ITC determined. The in vitro digesti

Agronomic drivers of Tribenuron-methyl resistance in wild mustard (Sinapis arvensis) in dryland wheat fields of western Iran.

Understanding the impact of common agronomic practices on the evolution of herbicide resistance is essential for developing sustainable weed management strategies that incorporate non-chemical control methods. In this study, we investigated the frequency of Tribenuron-methyl (TBM) reduced-sensitivity in wild mustard (Sinapis arvensis L.) by analyzing survival patterns and their association with agronomic management across 313 dryland wheat fields in the Eslamabad-e-Gharb district, Kermanshah, Iran. The results showed that survival levels in the studied fields varied notably, with 47.3% exhibit

Phytochemical analysis and biological study on Sinapis alba L. seeds extract incorporated with metal nanoparticles, in vitro approach.

White mustard (Sinapis alba L.) seeds are the most commonly used mustard species in herbal medicine to treat a wide range of inflammatory disorders. Due to its increased bioavailability and lower toxicity, the green biosynthesis of metal nanoparticles (M-NPs) utilizing plant extract as a capping agent has been demonstrated over a number of years. Thus, the current study sought to examine the in vitro biological activity of copper oxide nanoparticles  (CuO-NPs) and selenium nanoparticles (Se-NPs) that were biosynthesized using aqueous, methanolic, and petroleum ether extracts from S. alba seeds

Salicylic acid-mediated establishment of the compatibility between Alternaria brassicicola and Brassica juncea is mitigated by abscisic acid in Sinapis alba.

This work addresses the changes in the phytohormonal signature in the recognition of the necrotrophic fungal pathogen Alternaria brassicicola by susceptible Brassica juncea and resistant Sinapis alba. Although B. juncea, S. alba and Arabidopsis all belong to the same family, Brassicaceae, the phytohormonal response of susceptible B. juncea towards this pathogen is unique because the latter two species express non-host resistance. The differential expression of the PR1 gene and the increased level of salicylic acid (SA) indicated that an SA-mediated biotrophic mode of defence response was trigg

UV-B Inhibition of Phytochrome-Mediated Anthocyanin Formation in Sinapis alba L. Cotyledons : Action Spectrum and the Role of Photoreactivation.

An action spectrum was measured for ultraviolet (UV) radiation-induced damage to (inhibition of) phytochrome-induced anthocyanin formation in cotyledons of 40-hour-old Sinapis alba L. seedlings. The action spectrum showed maximum effectiveness in the 260 to 280 nanometer waveband with little effect above 295 nanometers. The damaging effect of UV could be photorepaired by subsequent exposure to sunlight or to long wavelength (360 nanometers) UV radiation. Because this form of damage is subject to photorepair (photoreactivation), it is probably due to the formation of pyrimidine dimers, and the
