I have explored some issues of power and the balance of power in the situation of the single parent and the family. The single parent may need the support of a holding environment to achieve psychological integration as exemplified by my treatment with Ms. B. Without a cooperative mate and with societal prejudice, the psychotherapeutic situation may be the only nurturing environment. The therapist empowers the single parent by providing a supportive, nurturing environment. Parenting is receiving bad press in this decade. More examples of child abuse and the extreme of homicide come to public a

OBJECTIVES: To characterize whether single parent households are associated with pediatric asthma-related repeat healthcare utilization and to examine family-level psychosocial variables that may explain this relationship.
METHODS: We analyzed a prospective cohort of 526 children aged 1-16 years hospitalized for asthma or bronchodilator-responsive wheezing whose caregivers self-reported their marital status. Those reporting being "single" were considered the at-risk category. The outcome was repeat asthma-related utilization (emergency room (ER) revisit or hospital readmission) within 12 mont

The prevalence of psychiatric and psychosomatic disorders in a 1 year birth cohort from northern Finland followed up until 19 years was examined on the basis of hospital records and national registers for subsidies for chronically sick children. Psychiatric disorders were found to occur with higher frequency in children of single parent families, especially those lacking a father during the child's whole life. Childhood enuresis was most frequent in the children who had experienced the divorce of their parents. Discriminant function analysis was used to establish the explanatory value of the f

Dyslexia is a specific learning difficulty that affects the development of literacy and language-related skills, unrelated to intellectual ability. While the impact of parenting an individual with dyslexia (IWD) for married parents has been widely studied, little is known about the impact on single parents. This study explored the lived experiences of single parents of an IWD. Six female participants completed semi-structured interviews discussing their experience of the diagnostic process, support received and general parenting perspectives. Interview transcripts were analysed using Interpret

The hypothesis that the modification of parent-child interaction would reduce the dysfluency of a pre-school child was tested in an experimental single-case study. The subject, a four-year-old boy with a moderate to severe stutter, and his parents attended their local clinic for a total of 17 weeks. On each visit, 20-minute play periods with each parent were recorded and measures of fluency taken. No advice was offered in the first six weeks and these measures were used as a baseline for subsequent therapy. Therapy was given over the next six weeks. The parents were advised to make changes in

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether family-based treatment (FBT) for adolescent bulimia nervosa (BN), which emphasizes family involvement in helping to reduce binge eating and purging behaviors, is differentially efficacious in single-parent families versus two-parent families.
METHOD: Forty-one adolescents (97.6% female; 16.0 +/- 1.7 years old) with either BN (n = 18) or subthreshold BN (n = 23) were randomized to FBT as part of a larger randomized controlled trial studying treatments for adolescent BN.
RESULTS: Two-parent (n = 27; 65.9%) and single-parent (n = 14; 34.2%) families were compared o

Single-parent families and children seen in Hacettepe University's Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in 1985 and 1995 were evaluated. Divorce was the most frequent reason for single parenthood. Children of divorced families experienced a higher number and severity of symptoms, and a longer delay before applying for medical help. Oppositional defiant behavior was at equal frequency in all groups, but suicide attempts, school failure due to psychological causes, conduct disorder, and somatoform disorders were more frequent in divorced families. Divorced mothers were more likely to ha

BACKGROUND: Endovascular coil embolization has become an important method in the management of intracranial aneurysm. However, simultaneously coiling multiple intracranial aneurysms (MIAs) in unilateral parent artery in one-stage may fail or insufficient in geographic difficult aneurysm. Flow diverter (FD) has the potential to manage MIAs with nonamenable to coiling. Herein, we report periprocedural morphologic change and outcomes using single FD to manage unruptured MIAs in a parent artery.
METHODS: Over a 3-year period, a total of 63 patients with 126 MIAs successful managed by single FD wi

Data from the National Survey of Families and Households indicate that 10 percent of children born between 1960 and 1968 were born outside of marriage and that before age 16, another 19 percent experienced the dissolution of their parents' marriage. When parental death and other causes of family disruption are also considered, 36 percent of the children in that age cohort had been separated from at least one parent before they reached age 16, compared with 22 percent of children born two decades earlier. In all, 27 percent of nonmarital births between 1970 and 1984 were to cohabiting couples;

Hospitalization of a child is always stressful to families. For families without two parents to share the responsibilities and support one another, the stress is not easily borne. Furthermore, such families are likely to already have additional stresses related to the reason for the family breakup (divorce or death of a parent) and have the limited resources of single-parenthood: financial, social, time, and energy. If nurses and other health care personnel will evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of these vulnerable families and offer support and workable solutions to relieve specific press

Although research consistently suggests that adolescents in single-mother families are at increased risk for depression, the mechanisms that explain this relationship are unclear. In a community sample of adolescents (N = 368; ages 12-16; 50 % female; 50 % White) and their mothers (42 % single), adolescents completed measures of depressive symptoms, rumination, and depressogenic inferential style at baseline and two yearly follow-ups. Mothers reported on stressful events that occurred in the child's life from birth until baseline. Adolescents raised by single mothers, relative to partnered mot

Developments concerning single-parent, female-headed households in Quebec are analyzed. The authors note that in contrast to past experience, "the new single parent family is in most cases the result of a voluntary disruption of the household, or of a birth outside marriage; its head is mostly--and increasingly--the mother; and it concerns an increasingly younger population, among parents as well as children." Differences among metropolitan regions are analyzed with regard to labor force participation, income, and housing conditions. (SUMMARY IN ENG AND SPA)

BACKGROUND: Agoraphobia has traditionally been grouped with panic disorder in clinical and research settings. However, it has recently been acknowledged as a distinct condition which can and does occur in the absence panic disorder. The genetic heritability of agoraphobia is high. It can be impractical or impossible to contact parents directly to assess their psychiatric history, often leading to the use of single item measures of parental psychiatric history (e.g., has your mother/father ever had agoraphobia?). This study examined the agreement between responses of adult children (n = 1193) o

We have used X- and Y-linked RFLPs to determine the origin of the single X chromosome in 25 live-born individuals with Turner syndrome. We determined that 18 individuals retained a maternal X (Xm) and that seven retained the paternal X (Xp). No occult mosaicism was detected. We found no differences in either maternal or paternal ages for the two groups. The ratio of maternal X to paternal X is just over 2:1, which is consistent with the expected proportion of meiotic or mitotic products, with equal loss at each step, given the nonviability of 45,Y. Six phenotypic or physiologic characteristics

BACKGROUND: The family structure has evolved into various emerging types, such as single-parent families, which, due to their characteristics, have higher prevalence of mental disorders.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship between family functioning and generalized anxiety disorder in single-parent families.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was an observational, analytical, cross-sectional, comparative study involving 440 children from single-parent families. Participants were divided into two groups based on the family functioning questionnaire (FF-SIL). Quantitative variables were compared

Few researchers have studied how parents from diverse family structures cope with childhood chronic illness. We designed this study to discern the childhood cancer treatment decision-making (TDM) process in these families. Using grounded theory, we interviewed 15 custodial parents, nonresidential parents, and stepparents who had previously made a major treatment decision for their children with cancer. "Moving to place" was the central psychosocial process by which parents negotiated involvement in TDM. Parents moved toward or were moved away from involvement based on parent position in the fa

A family process model was tested, linking adequacy of family financial resources to academic and psychosocial adjustment among 156 African American 6- to 9-year-old children with single mothers who lived in the rural South. Seventy five percent of the sample lived in poverty. Lack of adequate financial resources was associated with more depressive symptoms and lower self-esteem among mothers. Self-esteem was linked with family routines and mother-child relationship quality. The paths from mother-child relationship quality and family routines to child academic and psychosocial adjustment were

Historically, cochlear implantation is reserved for those with bilateral severe to profound hearing loss. However, indications have expanded to include Single-Sided Deafness (SSD) because of the known benefits of binaural hearing and the limitations of unilateral hearing, especially for children developing linguistic and cognitive skills. This study aimed to provide a qualitative perspective of lived experiences of children with SSD who use a cochlear implant (CI), as perceived and reported by their parents. An online questionnaire was developed and distributed to evaluate outcomes of cochlear

OBJECTIVE: This study compares the mental health of single parents relative to partnered parents and assesses the contribution of the social and demographic factors to this difference, examining the gender difference in it.
METHODS: We analyzed 12,024 single and partnered subjects, aged 30-59 years, living with children, aged 0-19 years, drawn from the 4th, 5th, and 6th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) dataset in South Korea conducted from 2007-2013. Mental health was evaluated by self-reported questionnaires including depressive mood for recent two weeks, pres

BACKGROUND: Single parent families, including families headed by single fathers, are becoming increasingly common around the world. Previous evidence suggests that single parenthood is associated with adverse health outcomes and increased mortality; however, most studies have focused on single mothers, with little known about the health of single fathers. This study aimed to examine mortality in a large population-based sample of Canadian single fathers compared with single mothers and partnered fathers and mothers.
METHODS: We used a representative sample of 871 single fathers, 4590 single m
