[Single umbilical artery (SUA)].

Single umbilical artery (SUA) is the most common abnormality of the umbilical cord. It is associated with an increased incidence of atresia of hollow organs, renal abnormalities, limb reduction defects and spontaneous abortions. The aim of our study is to establish the association of SUA with types of malformations and the corresponding pathology of pregnancy and parturition. Although our investigation is in proof of the association of SUA with anomalies of GIT, CCS and CNS, most of our cases exhibit circulatory disturbances leading to pathology of pregnancy and delivery.

Umbilical Artery Thrombosis Masquerading as Single Umbilical Artery in a Stillbirth.

Background: Umbilical artery thrombosis (UAT) masquerading as a single umbilical artery (SUA) is a rare but critical diagnostic challenge in prenatal care. Case Presentation: We described a case of a 22-year-old primigravida with an uneventful obstetric history who presented with reduced fetal movements at 22 weeks of gestation. Ultrasound showed no gross fetal structural anomalies while umbilical artery Doppler flow imaging revealed an isolated SUA. The patient again presented with diminished fetal movement at 24 weeks gestation, and a diagnosis of intrauterine demise was confirmed ultrasonog

Umbilical vein to artery ratio in fetuses with single umbilical artery.

In fetuses with single umbilical artery (SUA) the entire blood flow to the placenta is transported through only one umbilical artery, resulting in a compensatory increase of the arterial diameter. In order to establish whether umbilical vessel size could be used as an additional ultrasonographic criterion for prenatal diagnosis of SUA, we measured umbilical vein and umbilical artery diameters in 55 fetuses with SUA and in 55 with a normal three-vessel cord matched for gestational age. In all but one fetus with SUA, the diameter of the umbilical artery was greater than 50% of that of the umbili

Single umbilical artery: prenatal findings.

In 450 patients with pregnancy at high risk for fetal malformation and/or intrauterine growth retardation, the umbilical cord was investigated sonographically for the presence of a single umbilical artery. A single umbilical artery was diagnosed in four fetuses between 23 and 33 weeks of gestation and suspected in two. Three cases were overlooked at sonography. All seven surviving fetuses had growth retardation at delivery and four also showed severe malformations. Whenever a single umbilical artery is found at sonography, further work-up is required to rule out associated anomalies, intrauter

Double umbilical artery converging into a single umbilical artery: A case report.

RATIONALE: The normal structure and Doppler parameters of the umbilical cord are closely related to many diseases, including fetal infection, chromosomal abnormalities, hypoxia, and growth and development restrictions. We report a case of bilateral umbilical artery confluence resulting in the formation of a single umbilical artery in the free segment of the fetal umbilical cord, diagnosed at 24 weeks and 4 days gestation. The fetus was born prematurely after premature membrane rupture at 31 weeks and 3 days gestation. The Toxoplasma, Others, Rubellavirus, Cytomegalovirus, Herpesvirus test show

Single umbilical artery in twin pregnancies.

OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to evaluate the antenatal incidence of single umbilical artery (SUA) in twin pregnancies according to chorionicity and to assess its relationship with outcome. METHODS: Consecutive twin pregnancies undergoing ultrasound evaluation at our institutions were included. A targeted sonographic evaluation of the umbilical cord and vessels was performed in all cases. Chorionicity was determined according to standard ultrasound criteria. RESULTS: A total of 174 twin pregnancies, 100 dichorionic (DC) and 74 monochorionic (MC), were included in the study. An SUA was identifie

Rhombencephalosynapsis: association with single umbilical artery.

A 6-year-old girl who presented with developmental delay and non-progressive ataxia is described. MRI of brain showed agenesis of cerebellar vermis with fusion of cerebellar hemispheres and dentate nuclei. MRI findings were characteristic of rhombencephalosynapsis. Partial agenesis of corpus callosum and absent septum pellucidum were also seen. The child had also been noted to have a single umbilical artery at birth: a hitherto undescribed association.

Single umbilical artery: Does side matter?

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to determine if laterality of an absent umbilical artery (AUA) is associated with specific sonographic findings, chromosomal defects or postpartum birth defects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, ultrasound reports and medical records of patients who received an obstetric ultrasound at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics with an identified laterality of the AUA from 1989 to 2007 (n = 405) were reviewed. Rates of sonographic abnormalities between fetuses with a right versus left AUA were compared using Fisher's exact tes

Single umbilical artery in fetopathological investigations.

Single umbilical artery (SUA) is a relatively common malformation that may call attention to the possibility of associated malformations (often chromosome aberrations). The current study aimed at surveying malformations associated with SUA on the basis of fetopathological investigations, analyzing the role of history, summarizing the clinically important factors emerging together with this malformation. In this study, we processed the details of 204 cases in which SUA was confirmed fetopathologically after miscarriage or induced abortion between 1990 and 2007. In our sample, SUA occurred in 7.

[Fissured "single" umbilical artery (author's transl)].

The finding of a single umbilical artery 10 cm above the placenta is no prove of its singularity in all the course. This observation indicates that a solitary umbilical artery is neither a main pathogenetic fact nor an evident morphologic pattern concerning fundamental disorders in placentation and fetal development.

Spontaneous haematoma of the umbilical cord with a single umbilical artery.

A rare example of the partial rupture of the umbilical vein resulting in a cord haematoma is reported. CTG alterations made possible to anticipate the deterioration of the foetal condition and a healthy infant was delivered by emergency caesarean section. Cross sections of the umbilical cord revealed the lack of one of the umbilical arteries and the haematoma having interfered with the foetal circulation.

Single umbilical artery. Correlation of clinical status and umbilical cord histology.

Although numerous reports are available concerning infants who have single umbilical artery, there are no studies that correlate the incidence of congenital malformations or prognosis of such infants with the presence or absence of an atrophied artery in their associated umbilical cords. For this reason, we studied 48 infants who have single umbilical artery. No significant differences were detected in congenital malformations or neonatal mortality between infants with atrophy of one of their arteries and infants with arterial aplasia.

Transverse umbilical arterial diameter: technique for the prenatal diagnosis of single umbilical artery.

We investigated the relationship between the transverse umbilical arterial diameter and the presence of a single umbilical artery. Further, we speculated that fetal physiologic and hemodynamic limitations in pregnancies complicated by a single umbilical artery would result in larger umbilical arterial diameters than the typical three-vessel cord. The identification of a sufficiently large umbilical artery may be pathognomonic for single umbilical artery. The transverse umbilical arterial diameter was obtained in 100 consecutive, uncomplicated singleton pregnancies between 20 and 38 weeks' gest

Isolated single umbilical artery and fetal karyotype.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the need for fetal karyotyping in cases of an isolated single umbilical artery (SUA) identified during the second-trimester routine anomaly scan. METHODS: All patients booked for antenatal care and delivery in our hospital are offered two ultrasound scans in pregnancy, one at 11-13 weeks' gestation as part of screening for chromosomal defects and another at 20-23 weeks for detailed fetal examination. In addition we examine patients referred from other hospitals because of suspected fetal abnormalities during their routine second-trimester scan. We performed a search of

Antenatal sonographic detection of single umbilical artery.

The absence of one umbilical artery of single umbilical artery (SUA) is one of the most common congenital malformations in man. This vascular anomaly of the umbilical cord is frequently associated with other congenital malformations as well as some adverse perinatal events such as intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR), premature delivery, and increased perinatal mortality. Five cases of SUA detected prenatally by ultrasound are reported here in detail, including the first reported case in a twin gestation. None of the 5 affected infants had associated anomalies, but 2 cases of intrauterine gr

Antenatal sonographic diagnosis of single umbilical artery.

Seven fetuses with a single umbilical artery were detected at the perinatal ultrasound unit of Yale University during a one-year period. Other sonographic abnormalities included hydramnios (four cases) and intrauterine growth retardation (two cases). Two neonates died shortly after birth, two others survived with abnormalities, and three were normal. The varied sonographic appearances of single umbilical artery are illustrated and contrasted with sonograms of normal umbilical cords.

Twin pregnancies discordant for single umbilical artery.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the perinatal outcomes in twin pregnancies discordant for single umbilical artery (SUA). STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort study. Our database was searched for all cases of twin gestation and SUA from 1997-2009. We reviewed all the maternal and neonatal records and placental pathology reports. The outcomes of the SUA fetuses were compared to that of their co-twins with a 3-vessel cord (3VC). Paired t test and chi2 tests were used for statistical analyses. RESULTS: We identified 29 cases of twin pregnancies discordant for SUA out of 60,989 ultrasound patient

[Single umbilical artery: review of 12 cases].

The umbilical cord normally consists of three vessels, two arteries and one vein. The absence of one umbilical artery or single umbilical artery (SUA) has been associated with some adverse perinatal events, such as low birth weight, prematurity, congenital malformations and perinatal mortality. The authors present 12 cases of SUA confirmed by histologic examination and the principal maternal and perinatal features of these cases are analyzed. In our study there were a prematurity rate of 58%, a low birth weight rate of 66% and a perinatal mortality rate of 580/1000. Among our patients, 42% of
