The single parent family and the child's mental health.

The prevalence of psychiatric and psychosomatic disorders in a 1 year birth cohort from northern Finland followed up until 19 years was examined on the basis of hospital records and national registers for subsidies for chronically sick children. Psychiatric disorders were found to occur with higher frequency in children of single parent families, especially those lacking a father during the child's whole life. Childhood enuresis was most frequent in the children who had experienced the divorce of their parents. Discriminant function analysis was used to establish the explanatory value of the f

Are single-parent families different from two-parent families in the treatment of adolescent bulimia nervosa using family-based treatment?

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether family-based treatment (FBT) for adolescent bulimia nervosa (BN), which emphasizes family involvement in helping to reduce binge eating and purging behaviors, is differentially efficacious in single-parent families versus two-parent families. METHOD: Forty-one adolescents (97.6% female; 16.0 +/- 1.7 years old) with either BN (n = 18) or subthreshold BN (n = 23) were randomized to FBT as part of a larger randomized controlled trial studying treatments for adolescent BN. RESULTS: Two-parent (n = 27; 65.9%) and single-parent (n = 14; 34.2%) families were compared o

Relationship between family dysfunction and the presence of generalized anxiety disorder in single-parent families.

BACKGROUND: The family structure has evolved into various emerging types, such as single-parent families, which, due to their characteristics, have higher prevalence of mental disorders. OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship between family functioning and generalized anxiety disorder in single-parent families. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was an observational, analytical, cross-sectional, comparative study involving 440 children from single-parent families. Participants were divided into two groups based on the family functioning questionnaire (FF-SIL). Quantitative variables were compared

Moving to place: childhood cancer treatment decision making in single-parent and repartnered family structures.

Few researchers have studied how parents from diverse family structures cope with childhood chronic illness. We designed this study to discern the childhood cancer treatment decision-making (TDM) process in these families. Using grounded theory, we interviewed 15 custodial parents, nonresidential parents, and stepparents who had previously made a major treatment decision for their children with cancer. "Moving to place" was the central psychosocial process by which parents negotiated involvement in TDM. Parents moved toward or were moved away from involvement based on parent position in the fa

Maternal psychological functioning, family processes, and child adjustment in rural, single-parent, African American families.

A family process model was tested, linking adequacy of family financial resources to academic and psychosocial adjustment among 156 African American 6- to 9-year-old children with single mothers who lived in the rural South. Seventy five percent of the sample lived in poverty. Lack of adequate financial resources was associated with more depressive symptoms and lower self-esteem among mothers. Self-esteem was linked with family routines and mother-child relationship quality. The paths from mother-child relationship quality and family routines to child academic and psychosocial adjustment were

The hospitalization experience and single-parent families. A time of special vulnerability.

Hospitalization of a child is always stressful to families. For families without two parents to share the responsibilities and support one another, the stress is not easily borne. Furthermore, such families are likely to already have additional stresses related to the reason for the family breakup (divorce or death of a parent) and have the limited resources of single-parenthood: financial, social, time, and energy. If nurses and other health care personnel will evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of these vulnerable families and offer support and workable solutions to relieve specific press

BACKGROUND: Studies of parents' psychological well-being in single-family rooms in neonatal intensive care units have shown conflicting results. AIMS: To compare emotional distress in the form of depression, anxiety, stress and attachment scores among parents of very preterm infants cared for in a single-family rooms unit vs an open bay unit. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective survey design. SUBJECT: Parents (132) of 77 infants born at 28 0/7-32 0/7 weeks of gestation in the two units. OUTCOME MEASURES: Duration of parental presence was recorded. Cognitive Vulnerabilities to Depression for Adolescents in Single-Mother and Two-Parent Families.

Although research consistently suggests that adolescents in single-mother families are at increased risk for depression, the mechanisms that explain this relationship are unclear. In a community sample of adolescents (N = 368; ages 12-16; 50 % female; 50 % White) and their mothers (42 % single), adolescents completed measures of depressive symptoms, rumination, and depressogenic inferential style at baseline and two yearly follow-ups. Mothers reported on stressful events that occurred in the child's life from birth until baseline. Adolescents raised by single mothers, relative to partnered mot

Demographic features and psychosocial problems in single-parent families: 1985 to 1995.

Single-parent families and children seen in Hacettepe University's Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in 1985 and 1995 were evaluated. Divorce was the most frequent reason for single parenthood. Children of divorced families experienced a higher number and severity of symptoms, and a longer delay before applying for medical help. Oppositional defiant behavior was at equal frequency in all groups, but suicide attempts, school failure due to psychological causes, conduct disorder, and somatoform disorders were more frequent in divorced families. Divorced mothers were more likely to ha

Children's experience in single-parent families: implications of cohabitation and marital transitions.

Data from the National Survey of Families and Households indicate that 10 percent of children born between 1960 and 1968 were born outside of marriage and that before age 16, another 19 percent experienced the dissolution of their parents' marriage. When parental death and other causes of family disruption are also considered, 36 percent of the children in that age cohort had been separated from at least one parent before they reached age 16, compared with 22 percent of children born two decades earlier. In all, 27 percent of nonmarital births between 1970 and 1984 were to cohabiting couples;

[The evolution of female single parent families in various regions of Quebec, 1971-1981].

Developments concerning single-parent, female-headed households in Quebec are analyzed. The authors note that in contrast to past experience, "the new single parent family is in most cases the result of a voluntary disruption of the household, or of a birth outside marriage; its head is mostly--and increasingly--the mother; and it concerns an increasingly younger population, among parents as well as children." Differences among metropolitan regions are analyzed with regard to labor force participation, income, and housing conditions. (SUMMARY IN ENG AND SPA)

Hospital-treated psychiatric disorders in adults with a single-parent and two-parent family background: a 28-year follow-up of the 1966 Northern Finland Birth Cohort.

This study investigates the relationship between the family type (two-parent and 4 different single-parent types, mainly divorced) during childhood up to 14 years of age and adult hospital-treated psychiatric disorders in a sample from the unselected, general population Northern Finland 1966 Birth Cohort (N = 11,017). Up to the end of 1994, a total of 387 individuals (3.5%) had a hospital-treated psychiatric disorder, with 3.1% in two-parent families and 5.4% in single-parent families (p < .001). Family Functioning and Parent Behavioural Changes Post-Admission to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit: A Single-Centre Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Admission to a paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) is a significant event with potential long-term effects on family dynamics. Although Post-Intensive Care Syndrome in paediatrics (PICS-p) is well recognised, the effects of PICU admission on family functioning are not well understood. AIMS: This study sought to characterise family functioning in a cohort from the PICU following discharge and to investigate the impact of PICS-p sequelae on family dynamics. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a caregiver-reported cross-sectional survey of a single-centre cohort in Brisbane, Australia. Car

[Being raised by lesbian parents or in a single-parent family is no risk factor for problem behavior, however being raised as an adopted child is].

Modern reproductive techniques and alternative family structures (with single or homosexual parents and adoption situations) raise questions about the consequences for the growing children involved. Genetic links appear to be less important for the functioning of a family than a strong wish for parenthood; parents who have become parents only through great efforts display a better quality of parenthood than average natural parents. Characteristics of the parent/parents, such as paedagogic qualities, and the quality of the parent-child relationship appear more important than the type of family.

Single-parent family background and physical illness in adulthood: a follow-up study of the Northern Finland 1966 birth cohort.

The association between single-parent family background and physical illness in early adulthood was studied in a sample of an unselected, general population: the Northern Finland 1966 Birth Cohort. Between the ages of 16 and 28 years, women of single-parent family background were more commonly treated (61% versus 57%) for any physical condition in hospital wards compared with women of two-parent family background. Spontaneous abortions (odds ratio; OR = 1.4, 95% CI 1.0-2.0), complications of pregnancy (OR = 1.1, 95% CI 1.0-1.3), and intracranial injuries (OR = 2.0, 95% CI 1.0-3.8) were more co

Depression in left-behind adolescents from single-parent families: a nomogram based on multidimensional risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a significant issue affecting adolescents' mental health. While depression research is relatively extensive, studies focusing on left-behind adolescents from single-parent families remain limited. Due to their unique family structure, this group is more susceptible to multiple stressors, increasing their risk of depression. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to construct a predictive model based on a nomogram to identify the multidimensional characteristics of depression risk among left-behind adolescents from single-parent families, providing theoretical and practical evide

The influence of left-behind experiences on depression in single-parent adolescents: the mediating role of family satisfaction and the moderating effects of exercise frequency.

With the rise of rural-to-urban labor migration, the number of left-behind children in single-parent families has increased, raising concerns about their mental health. This study examines the impact of left-behind experiences on depression in single-parent left-behind adolescents, particularly focusing on the mediating role of family satisfaction and the moderating effects of exercise frequency and separation age. Using cross-sectional data from the China Psychological Health Guardian Project (CPHG), which includes 23,523 single-parent left-behind adolescents aged 12-18, we collected data on
