APCs in sinus floor augmentation.

After tooth loss in the posterior area of the maxilla, sinus floor elevation is often required to compensate the vertical bone loss due to sinus pneumatization. This narrative review reports on the potential benefits of autologous platelet concentrates (APCs) during this procedure. As for transcrestal approach, APCs have been used as "sole" substitute/graft. However, because of the low number of clinical trials available with PRGF, and even none for PRP, no definitive conclusions can be made regarding their efficacy. The number of studies on the use of L-PRF were outnumbered indicating good fe

[Bone quality after sinus floor augmentation].

The problem of insufficient alveolar bone in the edentulous maxilla caused by resorption and pneumatization can be overcome by augmentation of the sinus floor to increase bone volume for the placement of dental implants. The quality of bone which is achieved after sinus floor augmentation is hardly known. This study describes the histologic results obtained three till six months after sinus floor augmentation with autogenous bone from the iliac crest in patients with severe maxillary bone resorption. The bone biopsies taken from the implant sites showed a substantial bone volume with a mature

Sinus floor bone failures in maxillary sinus floor augmentation: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Extreme bone resorption in posterior maxilla may lead to absence of part of the sinus floor. This phenomenon has been termed sinus floor bone failure, and may compromise sinus floor augmentation. PURPOSE: The present article aims to evaluate risk factors related to sinus floor bone failures and to evaluate the influence of these failures in sinus floor augmentation outcomes in patients with severely atrophic posterior maxilla. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this case-control study, patients were selected among those referred for sinus floor augmentation. Only patients presenting a ridg

[Sinus floor bone augmentation: implementation of the concept of sinus-lift].

Sinus floor elevation is a technique allowing implant placement in the posterior edentulous maxilla when residual bone height is limited. This technique has evolved a lot since it has been first introduced in the eighties. Nowadays, this approach is considered as predictable, simple and practicable under local anaesthesia. The present article aims at understanding clearly the biological phenomenon of "sinus-lift". Moreover, the surgical protocol used at the University of Liège is considered didactically and reasoned according to the scientific literature.

Radiological changes in maxillary sinus morphology after lateral sinus floor augmentation.

Background: Restoration of the masticatory function in patients with edentulous posterior maxilla is often challenging due to the severe atrophy of the alveolar ridges and proximity of the maxillary sinus, resulting in insufficient bone quantity for implant-supported dentures.
Aim: The purpose of this study was to analyze the changes in Schneiderian membrane thickness after lateral sinus floor augmentation (LSFA) using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT).
Material and methods: WLSFA procedures using different bone gr

Clinical anatomy of the maxillary sinus: application to sinus floor augmentation.

The anatomy of the maxillary sinus, especially its vascular anatomy, and its relationships with the teeth and alveolar processes have been well documented. The development of cone-beam computed tomography has resulted in dentists being more familiar with maxillary sinus floor augmentation procedures. This paper aims to revisit the classic anatomy of the maxillary sinus and review the newly published literature in order to help dentists diagnose in more detail and perform safer surgery of the maxillary sinus.

Maxillary sinus floor augmentation in patients with maxillary sinus pseudocyst: case report.

The maxillary sinus floor elevation procedure has gained popularity with predictable results, and is a safe, acceptable technique for bone augmentation, providing a base for dental implant treatment. Faint radiopaque lesions at the base of the maxillary sinus are frequent diagnoses on radiographs and must be identified during dental implant planning. Pseudocysts classically appear hemispheric, homogeneously opaque, and well delineated in panoramic and periapical radiographs. The great majority of these lesions are asymptomatic and do not require surgical treatment. In this case report, we pres

Effect of maxillary sinus floor augmentation on sinus membrane thickness in computed tomography.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about maxillary sinus compliance, i.e., the intrinsic potential of the sinus membrane to resume its homeostatic status after the surgical trauma caused by sinus floor elevation. The aim of the present study is to investigate the effect of maxillary sinus floor augmentation on sinus membrane thickness. METHODS: Within-patient comparison of computed tomographic scans before bone grafting versus 4 to 6 months after bone grafting was performed. Changes in membrane thickness were evaluated in 65 maxillary sinus floor augmentation procedures via a lateral approach in 35

A review of rare complications of maxillary sinus floor augmentation.

Maxillary sinus floor augmentation (MSFA) is an essential procedure for implant installation in the posterior maxillary area with vertical alveolar bone deficiency. For the past several decades, MSFA has been refined in terms of surgical methods along with technical progress, accumulation of clinical studies, and development of graft materials and surgical instruments. Although some complications in MSFA are inevitable in clinical situations, management of those complications in MSFA has been well established thanks to many clinicians and researchers. Nevertheless, some rare complications may

From maximally to minimally invasive surgery for sinus floor augmentation.

Placing implants in the posterior region of the maxilla may require expanding the floor of the maxillary sinus. A major surgical procedure developed 30 years ago used lateral window access to the sinus cavity to achieve this. In the intervening years, less invasive techniques using a crestal approach were introduced; while they have reduced the complication and morbidity risks, they require micro-surgical skills. This review of the progression of maxillary sinus augmentation from major surgery to a minimally invasive procedure explores the various surgical approaches, discussing the advantages

[Imaging classification diagnosis and maxillary sinus floor augmentation of maxillary sinus cystic lesions].

Maxillary sinus cystic lesions can often be found in cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. However, whether this change affects the implementation of maxillary sinus floor augmentation remains unclear. Combining the common cystic change performance of CBCT, image classification diagnosis of maxillary sinus cystic change was introduced, and the indications and surgical methods of maxillary sinus floor augmentation and postoperative radiographic changes of mucous were analyzed. This procedure may help clinicians evaluate the feasibility and methods of maxillary sinus augmentation in maxil
