Sister Mary Joseph's nodule: Three case reports.

BACKGROUND: An umbilical metastatic lesion is called 'Sister Mary Joseph's nodule'. It is an uncommon clinical or radiographic finding, and it is rare as the first sign of a malignant disease. CASE PRESENTATION: We report three cases of Sister Mary Joseph's nodule. In the three cases presented, the primary tumor was an adenocarcinona of the sigmoid colon, a carcinoma of the bladder, and an adenocarcinoma of the gallbladder, respectively. CONCLUSION: The differential diagnosis of an umbilical lesion should always include metastatic disease apart from benign lesions and primary neoplasms.

Metastatic carcinoma of umbilicus: "Sister Mary Joseph's nodule".

A 72-year-old woman presented with a progressively enlarging, painful umbilical nodule. A biopsy specimen of the lesion showed focally mucin-producing adenocarcinoma, and the patient was diagnosed to have metastatic carcinoma of umbilicus: Sister Mary Joseph's nodule. Search for the primary tumor revealed adenocarcinoma of the splenic flexure of colon with metastasis to liver, spleen, and periaortic lymph nodes. Sister Mary Joseph's nodule is a well-known entity. It is a rare form of cutaneous umbilical metastases, can present as the first sign of intra-abdominal malignancy, carries very poor …

Fine needle aspiration of Sister Mary Joseph's nodule.

A case of Sister Mary Joseph's nodule (umbilical metastasis) is described from a primary adenocarcinoma of the transverse colon. Needle aspiration cytology made the diagnosis which was confirmed by immunocytochemical localization of CEA, B72.3, EMA, and cytokeratin in the tumour cells. Extensive mucus production in the tumour cells was demonstrated by alcian blue and mucicarmine stains.

Sister Mary Joseph's nodule - rare umbilical cutaneous metastasis.

This is a short review about a rare metastatic physical finding of abdomino-pelvic malignancies that is called Sister Mary Joseph's nodule. It is cutaneous metastasis in the umbilical region and it was first used almost 200 years ago. Even though it is a rare finding, we should not forget it in the differential diagnosis of umbilical nodules. The article also includes two case reports.

[Peritoneal Mesothelioma Diagnosed with a Sister Mary Joseph's Nodule].

In August 2022, a 59-year-old female noted a mass in her umbilicus and sought evaluation at Toyokawa City Hospital. Abdominal computed tomography(CT)scan revealed a 1.6 cm mass in the umbilical region, ascites in the pelvis, and increased absorption in the omentum. Peritoneal dissemination of the carcinoma and Sister Mary Joseph's nodule due to an unknown primary tumor were suspected because no abnormalities were detected during upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy. She underwent an umbilical lumpectomy and diagnostic laparoscopy to establish a definitive diagnosis. The surgical findings…

Sister Mary Joseph's nodule: a sign of internal malignancy.

The umbilicus can be affected by various skin diseases including metastasis of internal malignancies, at which point it is known as Sister Mary Joseph's Nodule. The authors report a case of Sister Mary Joseph's Nodule as the first sign of internal malignancy and highlight the importance for the dermatologist to recognize the condition.

Sister Mary Joseph's Nodule: Where Umbilicus Holds the Truth!

An umbilical metastasis from an internal visceral malignancy is defined as Sister Mary Joseph's nodule (SMJN), and, although a rare finding, it is a very poor prognostic indicator. We describe an interesting case of metastatic colon cancer with SMJN, emphasizing the significance of this classic finding. A 64-year-old female with a history of stage IV colon cancer with palliative right hemicolectomy and left hepatectomy presented to the hospital with nausea and abdominal discomfort. A computed tomography (CT) scan of the abdomen was performed, which showed small bowel obstruction secondary to m…

Sister Mary Joseph's nodule: the tip of an iceberg.

Sister Mary Joseph's nodule is a rare palpable umbilical cutaneous lesion as a result of an advanced intra-abdominal and/or pelvic malignancy. It may be the initial clinical manifestation of an underlying malignancy, originating mainly from the gastro-digestive or genito-urinary tract. We present here a rare case of a 67-year-old woman with a Sister Mary Joseph's nodule. On surgical exploration, a left ovarian mass with anterior abdominal wall metastasis, ascites and extensive intra-abdominal metastatic lesions were observed. Our case report shows the importance of a careful physical examinati…

Umbilical metastasis (Sister Mary Joseph's nodule) in a child.

Metastatic malignancy to the umbilicus, also known as Sister Mary Joseph's nodule, is a rare condition, which to our knowledge has not been reported in a child. We present a case of an umbilical metastasis from carcinoma of the colon in a boy who was also receiving chemotherapy for mediastinal lymphoblastic lymphoma.

Sister Mary Joseph's nodule: a clinical and histologic study.

The clinical and histologic findings in eighty-five cases of tumors metastatic to the umbilicus were studied. Clinically, the lesions were seen as firm, indurated nodules, sometimes with fissuring or ulceration. In twelve cases, the initial presentation of the internal primary malignancy was an umbilical nodule. Histologic material from the metastatic umbilical tumor was studied in all cases but was diagnostic of the primary carcinoma in only twenty-one. In seventeen cases, the primary site was never reliably determined, while stomach, large bowel, ovary, and pancreas were the most frequent pr

[Sister Mary Joseph nodule].

We here report the case of a 6-year old female patient with no pathological history, presenting with diffuse abdominal pain and abdominal distension evolving in the last 2 months. The patient had a deterioration in her general condition. Clinical examination showed distended abdomen, average abundance ascites, venous collateral circulation and multiple mobile hard abdominal masses measuring 3-4 cm in diameter at the level of the iliac fossa and of the left hypochondriac region associated with a well circumscribed, hard, rounded umbilical mass measuring 3cm in diameter lifting the skin with inf
