Understanding public perception of bra size.

BACKGROUND: Breast cup size is often used in conversations between patients and their surgeons to communicate about goals and expectations for postoperative results. Cup size, however, is a poorly defined concept. The goal of this study was to assess whether the perception of breast cup size is consistent in a general population of survey respondents. METHODS: A survey consisting of a demographic questionnaire, personal bra use questionnaire, and 27 de-identified preoperative images of patient's breasts was administered to 500 respondents using the Amazon MTurk platform. Survey respondents we

Size perception in hemianopia and neglect.

Some debate remains as to whether underestimation of the horizontal size of objects in the left part of visual space is a general disturbance in spatial neglect. The issue is unclear because size perception may be influenced by factors other than neglect, e.g. visual field defects such as hemianopia. To disentangle these effects, we compared the performance of patients with pure neglect, pure hemianopia or both on the same size-comparison test. Whereas pure neglect was accompanied by misperception of horizontal object size, patients with pure hemianopia showed an even greater impairment of siz

Size constancy affects the perception and parietal neural representation of object size.

Humans and animals rely on accurate object size perception to guide behavior. Object size is judged from visual input, but the relationship between an object's retinal size and its real-world size varies with distance. Humans perceive object sizes to be relatively constant when retinal size changes. Such size constancy compensates for the variable relationship between retinal size and real-world size, using the context of recent retinal sizes of the same object to bias perception towards its likely real-world size. We therefore hypothesized that object size perception may be affected by the ra

Attentional modulation of size perception in peripheral vision.

The perceived size of objects decreases with increasing eccentricity, a phenomenon known as the "size-eccentricity effect." This bias is thought to reflect cortical magnification: the overrepresentation of central vision relative to peripheral vision. Previous studies suggest that attention may influence this perceptual distortion, yet the specific contribution of endogenous attention remains debated. Here, we investigated whether endogenous attention attenuates or exacerbates the size-eccentricity effect. Ten healthy right-handed participants performed a size comparison task. On each trial, p

Perception of body size and body dissatisfaction in adults.

Self-perception of body size seems to be not always in line with clinical definitions of normal weight, overweight and obesity according to Word Health Organization classification. The effect of self-perception of body size disturbances and body dissatisfaction may be the development of eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa or binge eating disorder-a major risk factor of obesity development. Therefore, the study aimed to assess separately the perception of weight status and body size as well as body dissatisfaction in adults with normal weight, overweight and obesity. The study included 7

The "Crowd Size Illusion" and the Relativity of Number Perception.

When we investigate busy visual scenes, how do we estimate the number of objects that we see? Most work on number perception answers this question by focusing on properties of the to-be-estimated set of objects-their number, their size, their relative position, and so on. Here, in contrast, we show that perceived number is influenced by extraneous visual information. In six experiments, participants were shown "crowds" of dots that filled "seats" in a visual grid, asking whether the perceived number is influenced not only by the number of occupied seats, but also the number of unoccupied seats

Structural basis for size-selective perception of chitin in plants.

Plants detect microbes through pattern recognition receptors that perceive conserved microbial surface motifs known as microbe-associated molecular patterns (MAMPs). Lysin motif (LysM) receptors recognize and mediate downstream responses to chitinous MAMPs. In this study, we elucidated the mechanism for the specific recognition of long-chain chitin oligomers and identified a hallmark bridge domain characteristic of the CHITIN PERCEPTION (CHIP) receptor class. Structural analysis of receptor-ligand complexes, biochemistry, and in planta functional studies of inhibitory nanobodies revealed the m

Impaired distance perception and size constancy following bilateral occipitoparietal damage.

Accurate distance perception depends on the processing and integration of a variety of monocular and binocular cues. Dorsal stream lesions can impair this process, but details of this neurocognitive relationship remain unclear. Here, we tested a patient with bilateral occipitoparietal damage and severely impaired stereopsis. We addressed four related questions: (1) Can distance and size perception survive limitations in perceiving monocular and binocular cues? (2) Are egocentric (self-referential) and allocentric (object-referential) distance judgments similarly impaired? (3) Are distance meas

Distance and Size Perception in Astronauts during Long-Duration Spaceflight.

Exposure to microgravity during spaceflight is known to elicit orientation illusions, errors in sensory localization, postural imbalance, changes in vestibulo-spinal and vestibulo-ocular reflexes, and space motion sickness. The objective of this experiment was to investigate whether an alteration in cognitive visual-spatial processing, such as the perception of distance and size of objects, is also taking place during prolonged exposure to microgravity. Our results show that astronauts on board the International Space Station exhibit biases in the perception of their environment. Objects' heig

Horizontal target size perturbations during grasping movements are described by subsequent size perception and saccade amplitude.

Perception and action are essential in our day-to-day interactions with the environment. Despite the dual-stream theory of action and perception, it is now accepted that action and perception processes interact with each other. However, little is known about the impact of unpredicted changes of target size during grasping actions on perception. We assessed whether size perception and saccade amplitude were affected before and after grasping a target that changed its horizontal size during the action execution under the presence or absence of tactile feedback. We have tested twenty-one particip

Maternal perception of decreased fetal movements is independent of infant size.

OBJECTIVE: Fetal movements are often used as a surrogate for fetal wellbeing. Previous research suggests a link between maternal perception of decreased fetal movements (DFM) and small-for-gestational-age (SGA) infants. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between maternal presentation with DFM and birth-weight centile categories at a large Australian perinatal center. METHODS: This was a retrospective study of non-anomalous singleton infants born at ≥ 28 + 0 weeks' gestation between January 2016 and October 2020 at the Mater Mothers' Hospital in Brisbane, Australia. The perception of food size and food shape in anorexia nervosa.

Visual perception of food size and shape in anorexia nervosa (AN) is an understudied topic, notwithstanding its relevance in approaching food, key-element in weight restoration. In addition, it is unclear how visual perception in AN is related to the age and the duration of illness. Here, we compared patients with AN to healthy controls (HCs) on their spatial resolution, biases in perceived food size, and holistic processing of food shape. A total of 122 participants were enrolled: 48 adolescents (27 AN and 21 HCs) and 74 adults (33 AN and 41 HCs). Participants at two academic sites (Israel an

Humans optimally integrate cutaneous and proprioceptive cues in haptic size perception.

Sensory perception relies on the brain's integration of multiple imprecise inputs, a process known as cue combination. Previous research has investigated multisensory integration or unisensory integration within non-haptic senses. In contrast, cue combination within the sense of touch has been understudied. Here, we investigated whether humans optimally combine haptic cutaneous and finger configuration cues when discerning the size of a disk held edge-on between the thumb and index fingers. When these two fingers span the disk to contact its perimeter, a finger configuration cue (the perceived

Saccadic adaptation shapes perceived size: Common codes for action and perception.

Recent findings suggest that perceptual and motor systems share common codes; for instance, perceived object location is known to correlate with motor changes in the oculomotor system. Here, we investigate whether modifying saccade amplitude affects object size perception. Participants saw in peripheral vision a test disk that could vary in size across trials. This disk was then replaced by a small target cross, which was the signal to make a saccade. After the saccade, the target cross was extinguished and replaced by a reference disk (thus seen in foveal vision). Participants had to compare

Stimulus size mediates Gestalt processes in object perception - evidence from simultanagnosia.

Simultanagnosia caused by posterior temporo-parietal brain damage is characterized through an inability to recognize a global Gestalt from an arrangement of single objects while perception of single objects appears widely intact. We asked whether recognition of single objects in simultanagnosia is still intact if objects are really large, i.e. if they exceed the size of a usual computer screen. Single objects were presented in three different sizes: 'regular', 'medium', and 'large'. Simultanagnosia patients demonstrated a decrease of recognition performance with increasing object size; recogni

Dissociations between the horizontal and dorsoventral axes in body-size perception.

Body size can vary throughout a person's lifetime, inducing plasticity of the internal body representation. Changes in horizontal width accompany those in dorsal-to-ventral thickness. To examine differences in the perception of different body axes, neural correlates of own-body-size perception in the horizontal and dorsoventral directions were compared using functional magnetic resonance imaging. Original and distorted (-30, -10, +10 and +30%) images of the neck-down region of their own body were presented to healthy female participants, who were then asked whether the images were of their own

Pupil size modulation drives retinal activity in mice and shapes human perception.

Retinal adaptation is assisted by the pupil, with pupil contraction and dilation thought to prevent global light changes from triggering neuronal activity in the retina. However, we find that pupillary constriction from increased light, the pupillary light reflex (PLR), can drive strong responses in retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) in vivo in mice. The PLR drives neural activity in all RGC types, and pupil-driven activity is relayed to the visual cortex. Furthermore, the consensual PLR allows one eye to respond to luminance changes presented to the other eye, leading to a binocular response and m

The Relation Between Female Genital Perception and Genital Measurements: Does Size Matter?

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Our aim was to measure the widths of labia minora and clitoral hood lengths of women not seeking labiaplasty and to assess their perceptions of their genitals using Female Genital Self Image Scale (FGSIS) scores to discuss whether size affects women's perceptions of their genitalia and also contribute to the literature on genital anatomy variation. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the gynecology clinic of a tertiary hospital, between February 2024 and July 2024, and included 200 women aged between 18 and 45 not requesting labiaplasty. The clito

Small or far away? Size and distance perception in the praying mantis.

Stereo or '3D' vision is an important but costly process seen in several evolutionarily distinct lineages including primates, birds and insects. Many selective advantages could have led to the evolution of stereo vision, including range finding, camouflage breaking and estimation of object size. In this paper, we investigate the possibility that stereo vision enables praying mantises to estimate the size of prey by using a combination of disparity cues and angular size cues. We used a recently developed insect 3D cinema paradigm to present mantises with virtual prey having differing disparity

Retinal versus physical stimulus size as determinants of visual perception in simultanagnosia.

Patients with simultanagnosia following bilateral parieto-temporo-occipital brain damage show a characteristic impairment of global gestalt perception, while their perception of individual objects or elements remains intact. For instance, when shown 'hierarchical' stimuli comprising a larger global object (e.g. a large letter) made up from smaller components (e.g. multiple small letters), they typically report seeing one of the smaller components but not the global figure. Recent work on simultanagnosia revealed that global perception can be improved if local element spacing is reduced. Howeve
