We quantify the oxygen consumption rates and cost of transport (COT) of a benthic batoid fish, the little skate, Leucoraja erinacea, at three swimming speeds. We report that this species has the lowest mass-adjusted swimming metabolic rate measured for any elasmobranch; however, this species incurs a much higher COT at approximately five times the lowest values recorded for some teleosts. In addition, because skates lack a propulsive caudal fin and could not sustain steady swimming beyond a relatively low optimum speed of 1.25 body lengths s(-1), we propose that the locomotor efficiency of ben

Crushing and eating hard prey (durophagy) is mechanically demanding. The cartilage jaws of durophagous stingrays are known to be reinforced relative to non-durophagous relatives, with a thickened external cortex of mineralized blocks (tesserae), reinforcing struts inside the jaw (trabeculae), and pavement-like dentition. These strategies for skeletal strengthening against durophagy, however, are largely understood only from myliobatiform stingrays, although a hard prey diet has evolved multiple times in batoid fishes (rays, skates, guitarfishes). We perform a quantitative analysis of micro-CT

Mineralocorticoid receptors (MR) and glucocorticoid receptors (GR) are descended from an ancestral corticoid receptor (CR). To date, the earliest CR have been found in lamprey and hagfish, two jawless fish (cyclostomes) that evolved at the base of the vertebrate line. Lamprey CR has both MR and GR activity. Distinct orthologs of the GR and MR first appear in skates and sharks, which are cartilaginous fishes (Chondrichthyes). Aldosterone, the physiological mineralocorticoid in terrestrial vertebrates, first appears in lobe-finned fish, such as lungfish and coelacanth, forerunners of terrestrial

In order to evaluate the infestation by anisakids present in elasmobranchs and their distribution in the Argentine Sea, this study was carried at a regional scale with the following aims: 1) to identify those anisakid species present in skates under exploitation; 2) to characterize quantitatively these infestations and 3) to determine those factors driving the variability in parasite burdens across skate species. A total of 351 skates, belonging to 3 species (218 Sympterygia bonapartii, 86 Zearaja chilensis and 47 Atlantoraja castelnaui) and from different localities of the Argentine Sea were

Elevated plasma potassium levels (hyperkalemia), reduced plasma pH (acidosis), reduced blood oxygen content, and elevated temperatures are associated with species-specific rates of at-vessel and post-release mortality in elasmobranch fishes. The mechanism linking these physiological disturbances to mortality remains undetermined however, and we hypothesize that the proximate cause is reduced myocardial function. We measured changes in the functional properties of isolated ventricular myocardial strips from clearnose skate (Rostroraja eglanteria), smooth dogfish (Mustelus canis), and sandbar sh

BACKGROUND: Parasites of deep-sea fishes from the South-East Pacific (SPO) are poorly known. Of c.1030 species of fish found in this area, 100-150 inhabit the deep-sea (deeper than 200 m). Only six articles concerning metazoan parasites of fish from deep-waters of SOP are known, and nine monogenean species have been reported. Currently, ten species are known in Acanthocotyle Monticelli, 1888 (Monogenea) and when stated, all of them are found in shallow waters (10-100 m). Acanthocotyle gurgesiella Ñacari, Sepulveda, Escribano & Oliva, 2018 is the only known species parasitizing deep-sea skates

The mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) is descended from a corticoid receptor (CR), which has descendants in lamprey and hagfish, cyclostomes (jawless fish), a taxon that evolved at the base of the vertebrate line. A distinct MR and GR first appear in cartilaginous fishes (Chondrichthyes), such as sharks, skates, rays and chimeras. Skate MR has a strong response to corticosteroids that are mineralocorticoids and glucocorticoids in humans. The half-maximal responses (EC50s) for skate MR for the mineralocorticoids aldosterone and 11-deoxycorticosterone are 0.07 nM and 0.03 nM, respectively. EC50s f

Cartilaginous fishes (e.g., sharks, rays, and skates) cannot see blue or violet light, potentially because they lack the shortwave-sensitive cone opsin gene (sws). Widespread gene loss can occur during evolution, but the evolutionary mechanisms underlying sws loss remains unclear. Here, we construct whole-genome assemblies of Okamejei kenojei (skate) and Prionace glauca (blue shark). We then analyze the distribution characteristics and intragroup differences of opsin-related genes in cartilaginous fishes. Using a zebrafish model with sws deleted we infer that in the presence of SWS1 and SWS2,

The mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) and its kin, the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) evolved from an ancestral corticoid receptor (CR) in a cyclostome (jawless fish) through gene duplication and divergence. Distinct MR and GR orthologs first appear in cartilaginous fishes, such as sharks, skates, rays and chimaeras. Although aldosterone, the main physiological mineralocorticoid in humans and other terrestrial vertebrates, is not synthesized by cyclostomes or cartilaginous fishes, cyclostome CR and cartilaginous fish MR and GR are activated by aldosterone. Aldosterone first appears in lungfish, lo

Elasmobranchs (sharks and rays) are charismatic cartilaginous fish, popular in public aquaria. Almost 200 shark and ray species are listed as threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), demonstrating the importance of captive breeding and research programmes. Limited studies investigate diseases of elasmobranchs in captive and free-living environments, and among available literature neoplasia is rarely reported, with even fewer cases of lymphoid neoplasia documented. This article outlines the first reports of lymphoid neoplasia in three elasmobranch species in whic

The Neptunea cumingii (N. cumingii) fishing industry has long relied on expensive and perishable skate (Raja porosa) meat as bait. The unknown chemical attraction mechanism has hindered the development of artificial alternatives. This study employed untargeted metabolomics to analyze the chemical composition of skate meat and combined quantitative behavioral analysis to identify four key attractant compounds. These compounds were taurine, glutamate (Glu), inositol, and lactate. A standardized behavioral assessment system was established using the three parameters of response time, displacement

Members of the Ikaros multigene family of zinc finger proteins are expressed in a tissue-specific manner and most are critical determinants in the development of both the B and T lymphocytes as well as NK and dendritic APC lineages. A PCR amplification strategy that is based on regions of shared sequence identity in Ikaros multigene family members found in mammals and several other vertebrates has led to the recovery of cDNAs that represent the orthologues of Ikaros, Aiolos, Helios, and Eos in Raja eglanteria (clearnose skate), a cartilaginous fish that is representative of an early divergence

Freshwater stingrays play a crucial ecological role in the Amazon; however, studies on their parasitic fauna still need to be made available. This study aimed to investigate the occurrence of hemoparasites, specifically Cyrilia spp., in specimens of Potamotrygon wallacei from the Lower Rio Negro, Brazil. The research was conducted through nighttime fishing at Praia do Açutuba and the Tupé Sustainable Development Reserve. Blood samples were collected by puncturing branchial vessels, and smears were stained and analyzed under a microscope for parasitemia quantification. The results showed that s

The axial skeleton of tetrapods is organized into distinct anteroposterior regions of the vertebral column (cervical, trunk, sacral, and caudal), and transitions between these regions are determined by colinear anterior expression boundaries of Hox5/6, -9, -10, and -11 paralogy group genes within embryonic paraxial mesoderm. Fishes, conversely, exhibit little in the way of discrete axial regionalization, and this has led to scenarios of an origin of Hox-mediated axial skeletal complexity with the evolutionary transition to land in tetrapods. Here, combining geometric morphometric analysis of v

This study aimed to evaluate the occurrence of hemoparasites and their effects on hematological and plasma biochemical parameters in stingrays from the lower Solimões River region, Amazonas. 130 juvenile stingrays were captured, 81 specimens of Potamotrygon motoro and 49 of Potamotrygon orbignyi. Gametocytes of Cyrilia sp. were found to be infected with mature erythrocytes, with parasitemia ranging from 0 to 1.9% of infected cells. The prevalence of infection was 49.2%, with no significant differences in prevalence or parasitemia between species or between males and females of both species stu

This study reports the first record of candiru, Vandellia sp. parasitizing the freshwater stingray Potamotrygon scobina in the Amazon basin, Brazil. In April 2018, a specimen of Potamotrygon scobina was collected by bottom long-term using fish as bait during the monitoring program in the Xingu River. During a routine inspection, a Vandellia sp. was observed in the branchial slit of the Potamotrygon scobina specimen. The trichomycterid was collected and preserved in 10% formaldehyde followed by preservation in 70% ethanol. This study is the first to record this parasite associated on a stingray

Stingrays cause more sting-related injuries than any other fish. Their venom and mechanism of injury lead to painful, poor-healing wounds that often become infected. Stingray injuries are further complicated by retained barbs and foreign bodies, which also may lead to considerable morbidity. Most stingray injuries can be treated with hot water immersion, wound debridement, and prophylactic antibiotics, while some may require more extensive treatment and surgical intervention at a tertiary care center. Educating patients about avoidance strategies, such as wading through water with a shuffling

The vertebral column is a key component of the jawed vertebrate (gnathostome) body plan, but the primitive embryonic origin of this skeleton remains unclear. In tetrapods, all vertebral components (neural arches, haemal arches and centra) derive from paraxial mesoderm (somites). However, in teleost fishes, vertebrae have a dual embryonic origin, with arches derived from somites, but centra formed, in part, by secretion of bone matrix from the notochord. Here, we test the embryonic origin of the vertebral skeleton in a cartilaginous fish (the skate, Leucoraja erinacea) which serves as an outgro

Commercial marine fish are a major source of exposure to harmful compounds such as methylmercury (MeHg) but are also an important source of nutrients including selenium (Se) and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω-3). Safe eating guidelines seek to provide information to minimize the risk of contaminant exposure, while promoting the nutritional benefits of eating fish, yet information on the patterns and drivers of contaminants and nutrients are scarce, particularly within and across populations of commercially harvested marine fish species. This study assessed total mercury (Hg), Se and to

Catch-and-release angling is a popular recreational pastime and an essential component of many fish research programmes. Marked physiological disturbances have been documented in elasmobranchs in response to angling and handling, but skates and rays remain understudied. Here, we describe for the first time the physiological responses of the critically endangered flapper skate (Dipturus intermedius) to angling, handling and tagging in Scotland. Sixty-one skate were captured by angling as part of a tagging research programme. We assessed individual health, measured blood parameters at two time p
