Metabolic Demand of Paralympic Alpine Skiing in Sit-Skiing Athletes.

Paralympic Alpine Skiing comprises three main categories, namely Standing, Visually Impaired and Sitting, to one of which athletes get classified depending on their individual impairment of ability. An existing sport profile of alpine skiing for able-bodied athletes facilitates the physical preparation process of Standing and Visually Impaired athletes. However, very little is known about performance determinants as well as content and structure of the physical preparation of athletes with congenital or acquired spinal cord injury competing in the Sitting class. The objective of this study was

Skiing injuries at the dizin ski resort.

Skiing is one of the more popular winter sports which may cause injuries. The objective of this study was to identify the most common types of injuries in Iran's largest ski resort. This cross-sectional descriptive study was performed on 1233 of patients admitted to the Dizin Resort Infirmary in 2008-2009. Obtained data included age, gender, injury type and medical interventions. All data were analyzed by SPSS 16.0 software. Results showed that 75% of the patients were male and 25% female. The mean age was found to be 27.86 (± 9.95) years. Most patients were between 20-29 years old (55.2%). Th

Snow skiing injuries.

BACKGROUND: Skiing is a sport that has exploded in popularity over the past 20 years. There are estimated to be 200 million skiers worldwide. OBJECTIVE: This article outlines the type and prevalence of ski injuries, and measures that have been made to reduce the incidence of injuries to skiers. DISCUSSION: The incidence of injury has decreased with the development of improved equipment, resort management and skier preparation. This decrease has been reflected in a lower rate of foot, ankle and tibial injuries. The overall incidence of knee injuries has increased and in particular an increase

Cross-Country Skiing.

Lighter-weight equipment, better groomed trails, and the increasing popularity of ski-skating techniques have introduced a new element to cross-country skiing: speed. Although the overall injury rate remains low, the number of traumatic injuries in cross-country skiers appears to be increasing. Most ski injuries, however, are still caused by overuse and can be easily prevented with proper conditioning.

Downhill Skiing Injuries.

In brief: Lower extremity injuries are common in downhill skiing. Fifty-three percent of the skiing injuries in one study, and 81% in another, were below the knee. Twelve case reports are presented and their treatment is discussed. The author suggests that skiers undertake a physical fitness program to increase stamina and elasticity of muscles and ligaments.

Technique and maximal skiing speed for youth cross-country skiing performance.

INTRODUCTION: Numerous researches concentrate on examining and preparing high-level male cross-country skiers, with a significant number of tests being conducted on roller skis. However, there is a scarcity of research on the testing and preparation of younger male and female athletes ranging from 10 to 16 years old. The main purpose of this research was to determine if certain cross-country (XC) skiing tests and maturity status are indicators of performance in youth cross-country skiing; to examine any differences in performance between young males and females; and to establish non-invasive d

Biomechanics of crosscountry skiing.

The mechanics of crosscountry skiing involve a complex interaction between the kinematic characteristics of the movement patterns and the kinetic relationships driving the motion. Crosscountry skiing techniques have been the subject of some biomechanical research, primarily involving the traditional diagonal stride technique. In the 1980s, skiers have developed several new approaches to moving across snow. These skating techniques rely on the generation of force from ski placements at an angle to the forward direction creating propulsive force while the ski slides forward. Biomechanical analys

Ankle injuries in skiing.

With the development of new ski equipment and improvement in skiing techniques and slope grooming, the incidence, mechanism, and type of ankle injuries suffered during skiing have changed. Ankle sprains, peroneal tendon dislocations, Achilles tendon ruptures, and ankle fractures all can happen as the result of skiing. However, the incidence of these injuries has been dramatically lowered in the past two decades. All of these injuries should be treated aggressively to allow the skier to return to skiing. The early functional treatment of acute ankle sprains will return many skiers to activity q

[Vascular injuries during skiing].

Traumatic lesions of blood vessels occur only rarely in skiing, they are, however, mostly very dramatic events which may lead to the loss of an extremity. Relatively simple measures of diagnosis and therapy may save the skier's threatened life and extremity. Some of these are: Realization that a vascular trauma has occurred, tight pressure bandage, bringing the patient into shock-position, immediate transport by helicopter to a medical center with surgeons trained in vascular surgery.

Clinical biomechanics of skiing.

Abnormalities of lower-leg alignment may lead to a number of skiing problems. Tibia vara may cause difficulties in turning and riding a flat ski unless the boot cuff is properly adjusted to the lower leg. Varus deformities in the foot may lead to boot-fitting difficulties, foot and knee pain, and the inability to edge a ski turn properly. Compensation for these problems with an appropriately posted, corrective, orthotic device may allow skiing participation with greater comfort and better performance.

Skiing injuries in Australia.

A prospective study of 1850 skiing injuries which occurred during the 1983 skiing season in Australia is presented. To date, it is the largest prospective review of skiing injuries in Australia. All injuries were seen and treated by the same medical practitioner. In contrast with previous reports, upper extremity injuries and lower extremity injuries were almost equally represented (36% and 42% of the total number of injuries, respectively); injuries to the head, face and neck accounted for 17% of the total number of injuries. The injury rate of 3.80 per 1000 skiers establishes skiing as a saf

Laboratory- and field-based performance-predictions in cross-country skiing and roller-skiing.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate how various laboratory- and field-based tests predict on-snow cross-country (XC) skiing and roller-skiing performance. Thirty-three national-level male XC skiers (19.0±2.5 years, maximal oxygen uptake [VO2max] 70.8±4.7 mL·min-1·kg-1) performed a 13.6-km roller-ski skating competition tracked by a global positioning system (GPS), which together with individual distance International Ski Federation (FIS) points was used to assess their performance level. On separate days, time in a 6.4-km uphill running time-trial (RUN-TT) and 1.3-km uphill rol

Risk factors for injuries in alpine skiing, telemark skiing and snowboarding--case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Alpine skiing and snowboarding have a substantial risk of injuries, but precise risk factor estimates are limited. Objective To determine the risk factors among skiers and snowboarders. STUDY DESIGN: Case-control study. METHODS: Ski patrols reported cases (N=3277) in eight major Norwegian alpine resorts. Injury type and risk factors (age, gender, nationality, skill level, equipment, helmet use, ski school attendance, rented or own equipment) were recorded. An uninjured control group (N=2992) was obtained at the same resorts. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to

Ski sickness.

Dizziness with illusionary rotatory or pendular sensations and dysequilibrium accompanied by nausea and occasionally by vomiting may appear during down-hill skiing. It is proposed that the condition is called "ski sickness". Ski sickness seems to represent a special form of motion sickness produced by unusual and contradictory sensory information between the visual, vestibular and somato-sensory system. The pathophysiology seems to be related to vestibular overstimulation from winding turns on uneven ground, insufficient visual control, specially on foggy days with reduced visibility (on so ca

To ski or not to ski? A meta-analysis of more than 750,000 upper extremity injuries comparing skiing and snowboarding.

BACKGROUND: Alpine skiing has seen advancements in equipment since the year 2000, with the appearance of ski carving. Its impact on upper extremity injuries has yet to be proven. We conducted a meta-analysis to determine the epidemiology of upper extremity injuries in alpine skiing and snowboarding, its chronological evolution in the last two decades, and the impact of carving. METHOD: A systematic search in PubMed was conducted including studies from 1939 to 2024. The search strategy used text words and relevant indexing to identify articles discussing upper extremity injuries associated wit

[Skiing Accident with Temporary Tetraparesis].

Skiing Accident with Temporary Tetraparesis Abstract. Summary: We present the case of a 74-year-old patient who initially suffered transient tetraplegia after a skiing accident. On presentation to the general practitioner, pyramidal tract signs as well as disturbances of fine motor function in both hands could be observed. MRI examinations of the cervical spine revealed high-grade spinal stenosis at level C5 with myelon compression. Surgical decompression of the spial cord, followed by fusion of the corresponding cervical vertebral bodies, was performed. After surgery and three weeks of neurol
