[Eczematous skin diseases].

The skin, as one of the most important barriers of the human body, protects the inner homeostasis from the harmful environmental influences as well as physical, chemical and biological factors. When the impact of these factors exceeds the tolerance and reproducing capacity of the skin, pathological alterations will develop. If follows from this that dermatology can surely be considered to be a part of environmental medicine. Eczematous diseases are mostly pathological pictures of varied mechanisms developing as a result of environmental influences (irritants, contact allergens, microbes). Sinc

Skin diseases of the vulva: eczematous diseases and contact urticaria.

Skin diseases in the vulvar area include a variety of disorders many of which have a chronic course with significant morbidity. It is important to be aware of the symptoms, signs and diagnostic tools in order to optimise treatment. Herein, the most common eczematous diseases of the vulvar area, i.e. lichen simplex chronicus, seborrhoeic dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, irritant contact dermatitis, and non-systemic and systemic allergic contact dermatitis are reviewed. Allergic contact urticaria is also described.

Illness perceptions of adults with eczematous skin diseases: a systematic mixed studies review.

BACKGROUND: Eczematous skin diseases, e.g., atopic dermatitis or contact dermatitis, are associated with a high disease burden, a significant impact on quality of life and a higher risk for anxiety and depression. Therefore, coping strategies are of interest. In order to understand coping processes, it is necessary to examine the patients' perspectives on their illness. The aim of this systematic mixed studies review is to investigate the illness perceptions of patients with eczematous skin diseases to get a better understanding of their coping processes. METHODS: We performed a systematic li

Eczematous skin disease and recall of past diagnoses: implications for smallpox vaccination.

BACKGROUND: Persons with atopic dermatitis or eczema, regardless of disease severity or activity, may develop eczema vaccinatum if they or their close contacts receive the smallpox vaccine. According to current recommendations, a preexposure vaccination program should identify these persons and exclude them from participating. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of diagnosed atopic dermatitis and eczema in a defined population and assess the sensitivity of screening questions to identify patients who have received these diagnoses. DESIGN: Population-based prevalence survey and telephone i

Topical and transdermal delivery with diseased human skin: passive and iontophoretic delivery of hydrocortisone into psoriatic and eczematous skin.

Psoriasis and atopic dermatitis (eczema) are both common immune-mediated inflammatory skin diseases associated with changes in skin's stratum corneum lipid structure and barrier functionality. The present study aimed to investigate healthy, eczematous, and psoriatic excised human tissue for the effect of non-infectious skin diseases on skin characteristics (surface color, pH, transepidermal water loss, electrical resistance, and histology), as well as on permeation and retention profile of hydrocortisone. Further, differences in percutaneous absorption on application of iontophoresis on health

Cutaneous larva migrans, a neglected tropical disease of skin, with severe secondary eczematization at an unusual location.

Cutaneous larva migrans (CLM), commonly referred to as creeping eruption, is an infectious condition caused by various types of hookworms. It primarily affects the superficial layers of the skin owing to the absence of hyaluronidases and proteases. Typically, the distal lower extremities are the most commonly affected areas. The presence of distinctive lesions characterized by erythematous, winding, or serpentine tracks, slightly elevated from the skin surface, is indicative of the condition. Diagnosis primarily relies on clinical observation. Dermoscopy reveals multiple segmented yellowish-li

Chronic eczematous dermatitis in patients with neurodegenerative diseases may be an early marker of bullous pemphigoid.

The number of elderly patients with chronic pruritus has been gradually increasing in aging countries. Bullous pemphigoid, a common autoimmune blister disease in the elderly, is always heralded by pruritic eczematous dermatitis and is often associated with neurodegenerative diseases. We hypothesized that chronic eczematous dermatitis in patients with neurodegenerative diseases may be an early marker of bullous pemphigoid. By conducting retrospective chart review, we found neurodegenerative diseases are more prevalent in elderly patients with chronic eczematous dermatitis. The mean time delay b

The Endocannabinoid System and Its Role in Eczematous Dermatoses.

The skin serves as the foremost barrier between the internal body and the external world, providing crucial protection against pathogens and chemical, mechanical, and ultraviolet damages. The skin is a central player in the intricate network of immune, neurologic, and endocrine systems. The endocannabinoid system (ECS) includes an extensive network of bioactive lipid mediators and their receptors, functions to modulate appetite, pain, mood, and memory, and has recently been implicated in skin homeostasis. Disruption of ECS homeostasis is implicated in the pathogenesis of several prevalent skin

[Disseminated perinaevic Meyerson phenomenon revealing melanoma].

BACKGROUND: Meyerson phenomenon (MP) consists of an eczematous reaction occurring around a pre-existing dermatologic lesion that is usually melanocytic and generally benign, and which is known as a Meyerson naevus. We report a case of multiple Meyerson naevi revealing melanoma, which itself was surrounded by a halo of eczema. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A 55-year-old man of phototype III with atopic eczema presented for pruritic eczema present for a fortnight, found solely on and around the naevi on his trunk and at roots of his limbs. One of the melanocytic lesions affected by these Meyerson pheno

[Periorbital contact eczema].

Periorbital contact eczema is most commonly the result of an allergic contact dermatitis whereas other eczematous skin diseases like atopic eczema or seborrheic eczema occur less frequently. Also, other diseases like autoimmune disorders or rosacea need to be considered. Allergic contact dermatitis is a T-cell-mediated immunological response towards ubiquitous contact allergens. Activated T-cells migrate through the vessels into the skin and produce several inflammatory mediators. Epicutaneous patch testing is an important tool for the diagnosis of contact allergy whereby the allergens are ana

Colors and contact dermatitis.

The diagnosis of skin diseases relies on several clinical signs, among which color is of paramount importance. In this review, we consider certain clinical presentations of both eczematous and noneczematous contact dermatitis in which color plays a peculiar role orientating toward the right diagnosis. The conditions that will be discussed include specific clinical-morphologic subtypes of eczematous contact dermatitis, primary melanocytic, and nonmelanocytic contact hyperchromia, black dermographism, contact chemical leukoderma, and others. Based on the physical, chemical, and biologic factors

Delayed eczematous skin reaction as an adverse drug reaction to immunoglobulin infusions: A case series.

BACKGROUND: Pompholyx and eczematous reactions are known adverse reactions to intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIg) infusion, but little is known about their clinical characteristics, associated outcomes and management. OBJECTIVE: To describe IVIg-induced eczematous skin reactions. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study on cases of delayed skin reactions post-IVIg infusion notified to the French Regional Pharmacovigilance Centre from 1985 to 2020. RESULTS: A total of 27 patients were identified, of whom 85% were male. IVIg infusions were given in a neurological indication in 82% of cases.

Immunohistopathological Analysis of Spongiosis Formation in Atopic Dermatitis Compared with Other Skin Diseases.

Whether the spongiotic reaction caused by the interaction of keratinocytes, T-lymphocytes, inflammatory dendritic epidermal cells (IDECs), and Langerhans cells (LCs) observed in atopic dermatitis (AD) represents a common feature of spongiosis in various skin diseases remains unclear. We analyzed the characteristics of spongiosis in AD compared with those in other eczematous dermatitis and inflammatory skin diseases by using immunohistochemical methods. Infiltration of IDECs (CD11c+ cells and/or CD206+ cells) and T-lymphocytes, accompanied by degenerated keratinocytes and aggregated LCs (CD207+

Hand eczema: diagnosis and management.

The most common clinical presentations of hand eczema are atopic hand dermatitis, pompholyx, and contact dermatitis (irritant contact dermatitis [ICD], allergic contact dermatitis [ACD]). The diagnosis of hand dermatitis is determined by a review of the patient's medical history, a physical examination including other body sites as well as the hands, and a thorough overview of the patient's daily activities with emphasis on occupation and hobbies. Irritant contact dermatitis usually is diagnosed by the absence of a positive patch test result; however, patch testing is essential in confirming a
