Ocular complications of infectious skin diseases are a common occurrence. Managing the inflamed or infected eye in the emergency setting presents a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge to the emergency physician. Infectious agents may affect any part of the eye. Ocular findings may be the first sign of many infectious diseases, such as, for example, gonorrhea or chlamydia infection. Understanding the various forms of ocular involvement in these conditions is important, because untreated ophthalmic involvement can lead to severe vision loss. This review focuses on the significant ocular manifes

Nowadays, dermoscopy is a global worldwide diffuse diagnostic tool supporting clinicians in their daily hard task of correct orientation among dermatological diseases. Born to be an instrument for early diagnosis of skin cancer, the dermatoscope is now considered the dermatologist's stethoscope, as it can be routinely used to support diagnosis in general dermatology, so spreading its utility in cutaneous inflammatory and infectious diseases, as adjuvant and not substitute to histology and potassium hydroxide examination. As concerns the latter, plenty of papers have been published since the fi

Although the benefits of practicing sports are unquestionable, it can contribute to the spread of skin diseases. Mechanical trauma, exposure to environmental and infectious agents, and contact with the skin of other athletes increase the chances of getting an infection. In contact sports, skin infections are responsible for up to 20% of lost training and competition time. In the USA, skin infections, with an incidence of 8.5-20.9%, are the 2nd cause (following upper respiratory infections) of all medical consultations among young wrestlers. The high morbidity of skin diseases poses a great cha

Infectious skin diseases pose considerable treatment challenges, especially given the recent appearance of several highly virulent pathogens as well as the rising number of immunocompromised patients in the United States. This article discusses common bacterial, fungal, and viral skin infections with an emphasis on cellulitis, dermatophyte infections, and herpes simplex viral infections. Disease pathogenesis, treatment, and cost of treatment are addressed with an emphasis on therapeutic needs and future research directions. Common priorities for all infectious skin disease categories include i

Desmosomes are intercellular adhesive junctions of epithelial cells that contain two major transmembrane components, the desmogleins (Dsg) and desmocollins (Dsc), which are cadherin-type cell-cell adhesion molecules and are anchored to intermediate filaments of keratin through interactions with plakoglobin and desmoplakin. Desmosomes play an important role in maintaining the proper structure and barrier function of the epidermis and mucous epithelia. Four Dsg isoforms have been identified to date, Dsg1-Dsg4, and are involved in several skin and heart diseases. Dsg1 and Dsg3 are the two major D

Certain dermatologic conditions are unique to the breast and nipple, whereas others may incidentally involve these structures. All require a nuanced approach to diagnosis and treatment because of the functional, sexual, and aesthetic importance of this area. The lactating patient requires special management because certain treatment options are contraindicated. All dermatologic conditions involving the breast and nipple require careful evaluation because malignancy of the breast can be mistaken for a benign condition or may trigger the development of certain dermatologic conditions. INTRODUCTION: Papulosquamous diseases are characterized by scaly papules and plaques with similar clinical picture which amounts to confusion and hence, a definitive histopathological diagnosis goes a long way in treatment of such diseases.
AIM: The aim of the study was to study the histomorphology of non-infectious, erythaematous, papulosquamous lesions of skin with clinicopathological correlation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Skin biopsies from 150 clinically diagnosed/suspected non-infectious erythaematous, papulosquamous skin diseases were received in the Department of Pathology. The specimens

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Cutaneous manifestations of tropical and subtropical infections represent a significant clinical and public health concern, affecting both populations in endemic regions and international travelers with significant socioeconomic burden and social stigma. In light of contemporary climate change, increased human mobility and urbanization, these infections have increased in incidence and gained a broader geographical distribution.Nevertheless, achieving a diagnosis remains challenging due to overlapping clinical presentations, often limited access to advanced diagnostic tools,

BACKGROUND: An infectious pathogenesis should always be considered in inflammatory infiltrates in the skin. While some organisms can be recognized on hematoxylin-eosin staining (e.g. yeasts, leishmania), histochemical and immunohistochemical stainings are available for others.
OBJECTIVES: If no organisms are seen in a section, the diagnosis of an infection cannot be made with surety, but the pattern of the inflammatory infiltrate can still be suggestive of an infectious process. New or little-known reaction patterns and difficulties in differential diagnosis will be demonstrated.

Infections may lead to a multitude of pathological skin alterations, and represent the most common diseases in pediatric dermatology. A prerequisite for successful treatment is an accurate diagnosis based on the medical history, clinical presentation and the culture of pathogens. Of importance among the bacterial skin diseases in pediatrics are impetigo, scarlet fever, borreliosis and cat-scratch fever. Dermatophytoses caused by Trichophyton or species of Microsporum affect either hair-bearing skin (scalp) (tinea capitis) or non-hair-bearing skin of the face, trunk, neck and limbs (tinea corpo

Antimicrobial peptides or proteins (AMPs) represent an ancient and efficient innate defense mechanism which protects interfaces from infection with pathogenic microorganisms. In human skin AMPs are produced mainly by keratinocytes, neutrophils, sebocytes or sweat glands and are either expressed constitutively or after an inflammatory stimulus. In several human skin diseases there is an inverse correlation between severity of the disease and the level of AMP production. Skin lesions of patients with atopic dermatitis show a diminished expression of the beta-defensins and the cathelicidin LL-37.

Specific diagnoses of infectious skin diseases can be established in dermatopathology by several methods: by algorithms based on pattern analysis, by differential diagnosis of clinicopathologically similar disorders, by attention to pitfalls, by exceptions to the rules and finally, very elegantly by clues. Ten clues to specific diagnoses of infectious skin diseases which are of importance in routine practice are presented. Clue 1: Features of an angiocentric angiodestructive lymphoma in the centre of a wedge-shaped necrotic insect bite reaction are a clue to a bite by a spider. Clue 2: Paraker

The aim of this work was to systematically collect all previously published population-based epidemiological data on skin diseases in Germany. A systematic literature search was performed using PubMed/MEDLINE for the period of the last 15 years. With the aim to include all dermatological diseases, a diagnostic list based on the ICD-11 catalogue was compiled. This list included 1,347 skin diseases and formed the basis for the search. The present part 3 of the publication series deals with infectious skin diseases. The results on cutaneous tumor diseases (part 1) and non-infectious skin diseases

Penoscrotal skin diseases encompass an array of pathologies that present with unique clinical features. A patient-tailored approach to management is necessary. This article, part of a continuing medical education series, is dedicated to offering insights for managing penoscrotal dermatoses. The first article will provide an overview of normal variations, benign lesions, and malignant growths. We will then highlight up-to-date diagnostic and treatment protocols. In the second article, we will discuss inflammatory and infectious conditions, reviewing common diseases such as syphilis, human papil

The most important infectious skin diseases of the newbornperiod are discussed in a short survey. Those skin alterations which can already be observed immediately after birth are especially emphasized. The search for skin infections has to be a routine measure in the care of the newborn, because even the smallest pyoderms can lead to septic complications, and non-infected newborn must be protected through the quarantining and treatment of those newborns with the infection. Frequent occurrence of pyoderms should be taken as a reason for examining the hygienic measures in the delivery room, nurs

Infectious skin diseases constitute a significant public health problem. Despite the systematic development of many modern diagnostic and therapeutic tools, they still pose a serious challenge for clinicians. Due to their prevalence and mild course in most cases, they are often marginalized, which can delay their diagnosis and treatment initiation. Such an approach in more clinically advanced cases can have serious consequences, sometimes leading to tragic outcomes. This work presents a series of four cases of common infectious skin diseases with an unusually atypical clinical picture: the his

The surface receptor for advanced glycosylation end-products (RAGE) and its soluble (sRAGE) and endogenous secretory (EN-RAGE) forms belong to the superfamily of toll-like receptors and play important roles in inflammation and autoimmunity, directly or through binding with advanced glycosylation end-products (AGE) and advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP). We reviewed the literature on the role of RAGE in skin diseases. Research in this field is still rather limited (28 articles) but suggests the involvement of RAGE and RAGE-related pathways in chronic inflammatory diseases (lupus, psoria
