BACKGROUND: Human skin, and its associated microbiome, is a delicate ecosystem that faces daily challenges from various external factors such as ultraviolet exposure, pollutants, hygiene habits and cosmetics use. The microbiome can also be affected by internal influences such as diet and stress. Hygiene practices, especially the use of soap and bodywash, play a crucial role in maintaining skin health, hygiene and balance of the microbial ecosystem.
OBJECTIVES: To understand the effects of daily usage of cleansing products on the skin microbiome.
METHODS: Here, we performed 16S rRNA gene-sequ

The microbiome plays a significant role in human health, homeostasis, immune system, and disease pathogenesis. Disrupted communication between the microbiome and host has been extensively studied in gastrointestinal diseases. To a lesser extent, there is emerging research on the skin microbiome and its connection with the gut, referred to as the gut-skin axis and its effects on dermatologic conditions. A basic overview will be provided of the gut and skin microbiome with a focus on the impact of this connection on cutaneous diseases, such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, rosacea, acne vulgaris

Microbiotas in the skin have high levels of diversity at the species level, but low phylum-level diversity. The human skin microbiota is composed predominantly of Gram-positive bacteria especially Actinobacteria, which are the dominant bacterial phylum on the skin. Lipoteichoic acid (LTA) is a major constituent of the cell wall of Gram-positive bacteria and is therefore abundant in the skin microbiome. Recent studies have shown that LTA, and other bacterial products, permeates the whole skin and comes into contact with epidermal and dermal cells, including mast cells (MCs), with the potential

The imbalance and/or the perturbation of the microbial populations that colonize the skin and that contribute to its defense may represent one of the causes of the development of noninfectious skin diseases. Atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, acne, and rosacea can be listed among these kinds of pathologies. In particular, considering that microbes have been long addressed as having a role in rosacea, this common dermatosis can be an interesting model to evaluate the correlation between microbiome alterations and the occurrence of clinical manifestations. Different microorganisms have been suggested

Prurigo nodularis (PN) is a chronic condition characterized by the presence of nodular lesions accompanied by intense pruritus. The disease has been linked to several infectious factors, but data on the direct presence of microorganisms in the lesions of PN are scarce. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diversity and composition of the bacterial microbiome in PN lesions by targeting the region V3-V4 of 16S rRNA. Skin swabs were obtained from active nodules in 24 patients with PN, inflammatory patches of 14 patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) and corresponding skin areas of 9 healthy vo

OBJECTIVE: Skin microbiomes vary across individuals. They are known to play essential roles in maintaining homeostasis and preventing infectious pathogens. In recent years, cosmetic product development has begun to focus on the relationship between skin microbiomes and skin conditions. However, the statistical methods used in many studies include the standard t-test and small-scale correlation analysis, which do not take into account the internal correlation structure in data on skin microbiomes and skin features. In this study, we aimed to understand the relationship between skin microbiomes

Microbiome dysbiosis correlates with aging-associated pathological skin conditions, and our understanding of how the microbiome regulates skin aging at a molecular level is rapidly advancing. Classical hallmarks of skin aging, including genomic instability and telomere attrition, loss of proteostasis, epigenetic alterations, and altered intercellular communication, are critically regulated by the microbiome. Oxidative stress represents a key factor implicated in virtually all hallmarks of skin aging. Meanwhile, recent data underscore the role of metabolism in intercellular communication and ag

The skin microbiome, a diverse and dynamic ecosystem of microorganisms, plays a pivotal role in maintaining skin health by interacting with skin cells, immune components, and structural barriers. It is essential for skin homeostasis, immune defense, and protection against pathogenic colonization. Dysbiosis in the microbiome has been implicated in numerous dermatological conditions, including acne, eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea. Acne, the most prevalent skin condition, affects up to 85% of individuals at some point in their lives, while eczema and psoriasis impose significant public health and

Human skin is the largest organ and serves as the first line of defense against environmental factors. The human microbiota is defined as the total microbial community that coexists in the human body, while the microbiome refers to the collective genome of these microorganisms. Skin microbes do not simply reside on the skin but interact with the skin in a variety of ways, significantly affecting the skin barrier function. Here, we discuss recent insights into the symbiotic relationships between the microbiome and the skin barrier in physical, chemical, and innate/adaptive immunological ways. W

Distinct microbial communities inhabit individuals as part of the human skin microbiome and are continually shed to the surrounding environment. Microbial communities from 17 skin sites of 10 sexually active cohabiting couples (20 individuals) were sampled to test whether cohabitation impacts an individual's skin microbiome, leading to shared skin microbiota among partner pairs. Amplified 16S rRNA genes of bacteria and archaea from a total of 340 skin swabs were analyzed by high-throughput sequencing, and the results demonstrated that cohabitation was significantly associated with microbial co

Acne is an immune-mediated chronic inflammatory disease. Although several factors are involved in its pathophysiology, this process is not completely understood. Androgen hormone activity increases sebum production inside the pilosebaceous follicle, adjusting the environment for the development of Propionibacterium acnes which triggers inflammation. Knowing how others factors such as the skin barrier and microbiome are involved in acne, can help in understanding more about the disease and may help to conduct a better treatment.

As the global population ages, the prevention and treatment of skin aging have become critical areas of scientific research. The aging process of the skin leads to a decline in immune function and a reduced capacity for self-repair. Skin aging is driven by various factors, including intrinsic elements (such as genetic predispositions and biological aging), and extrinsic factors (notably ultraviolet radiation). Recent studies have highlighted the crucial role of the skin microbiome in maintaining skin health and regulating the aging process. This review emphasizes the impact of biological aging

As the body's largest organ, the skin harbors a highly diverse microbiota, playing a crucial role in resisting foreign pathogens, nurturing the immune system, and metabolizing natural products. The dysregulation of human skin microbiota is implicated in immune dysregulation and inflammatory responses. This review delineates the microbial alterations and immune dysregulation features in common Inflammatory Skin Diseases (ISDs) such as psoriasis, rosacea, atopic dermatitis(AD), seborrheic dermatitis(SD), diaper dermatitis(DD), and Malassezia folliculitis(MF).The skin microbiota, a complex and ev

The adult skin microbiome typically exhibits low microbial complexity, particularly on sebaceous sites, where lipophilic Cutibacterium and Malassezia spp. predominate. Current understanding of healthy skin microbiome is largely based on western, industrialized populations, with limited representation of diverse cultures and lifestyles. Here, we investigate the skin microbiome of a remote indigenous Yanomami community and reveal a complex microbial ecosystem comprising 115 previously unreported bacterial genomes. The Yanomami skin microbiome includes genera common to western populations alongsi

Human skin is a complex ecosystem that hosts diverse species of microorganisms. Unbalanced conditions caused by intrinsic and/or extrinsic factors can lead to dysbiosis, presenting symptoms, such as dryness, high transepidermal water loss, reduced barrier protection, premature ageing, and in severe cases, inflammatory dermatoses. Strategies to maintain the skin microbiome balance are becoming increasingly suggested, with prebiotic, probiotic, or postbiotic ingredients promoting the diversity and relative abundance of important microorganisms. Topical products directly influence this balance, b

Recent evidence indicates that both the bacterial composition of the skin and gut microbiota may contribute to the pathogenesis and progression of hidradenitis suppurativa (HS). Several studies have identified alterations in the skin bacterial microbiota, including an increased abundance of anaerobic taxa such as Prevotella spp. and Porphyromonas spp., alongside a reduction in commensal species like Cutibacterium spp., changes that may promote chronic inflammation and biofilm formation. Comparative analyses of lesional versus non-lesional skin have also revealed enrichment of bacterial pathway

The skin is a physical and immunological barrier to the external environment. Its large surface area is colonized by diverse communities of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and Demodex species mites. These microorganisms and their genetic material together create the skin microbiome. Physiologic and anatomic properties of skin sites create biogeographical habitats (dry, moist, and sebaceous) where distinct microbiota communities reside. Although, in general, the composition of these habitats is maintained from person to person, the skin microbiome of an individual also has u

Human skin acts as a barrier between the body and the outside environment, preventing disease-causing organisms and foreign substances from getting into our body. The skin also serves as an ecosystem for billions of microorganisms, collectively called the skin microbiome. Some of these microorganisms are merely bystanders, while others work together with the skin to fight invaders or promote immunity. While knowledge of the skin microbiome lags behind that of the gut microbiome, there is growing evidence that microbial imbalances on the skin are associated with skin disorders and chronic wound
