Sleep quality, sleep propensity and academic performance.

We examined associations between measures of sleep propensity on the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, sleep quality on the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and academic performance by GPA and grades in introductory psychology for 414 students. In the total sample, neither sleep propensity nor sleep quality correlated with GPA or introductory psychology grades. However, among students carrying a full course load, those reporting poor sleep quality performed less well on academic measures than those reporting a better quality of sleep. Further research is needed to assess the moderating influence of over

Sleep in overweight adolescents: shorter sleep, poorer sleep quality, sleepiness, and sleep-disordered breathing.

OBJECTIVE: To document the sleep of overweight adolescents and to explore the degree to which weight-related sleep pathology might account for diminished psychosocial outcome. METHODS: Sixty children aged 10-16.9 from a weight-management clinic were compared to 22 healthy controls using comprehensive actigraphic, polysomnographic, and parent- and self-report questionnaire assessments. RESULTS: Overweight participants averaged more symptoms of sleep-disordered breathing, later sleep onset, shorter sleep time, and more disrupted sleep than controls. Although the groups did not differ in self-r

Relationships between sleep paralysis and sleep quality: current insights.

Sleep paralysis is the unusual experience of waking up in the night without the ability to move. Currently little is known about the experience, despite the fact that the vast majority of episodes are associated with extreme fear and in a minority of cases can lead to clinically significant levels of distress. The aim of this work was to review the existing literature pertaining to the relationship sleep paralysis has to sleep more generally, measured both with subjective questionnaires and objective laboratory recordings. In terms of subjective sleep variables, worse sleep quality has been fo

Sleep quality in Lyme disease.

Complaints of chronic fatigue as well as sleep disturbances are prevalent in Lyme disease. We compared polysomnographic measures of sleep in patients with documented Lyme disease with those of a group of age-matched normal control subjects. Eleven patients meeting Centers for Disease Control criteria for late Lyme disease with serologic confirmation by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and Western blot without a history of other medical or psychiatric illness and 10 age-matched control subjects were studied. Lyme disease patients and controls underwent 2 nights of polysomnography. Multiple sle

Poor Parental Sleep and the Reported Sleep Quality of Their Children.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric sleep disturbances are regularly diagnosed on the basis of parental reports. However, the impact of parental sleeping problems on parental perceptions and reports of their child's sleep has not yet been studied. We hypothesized that poor parental sleep decreases the parent-reported child sleep quality. METHODS: A 1-week actigraph recording was performed in 100 children aged 2 to 6 years recruited in 16 day care centers. Their biological parents completed a sleep diary and a Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC) on children's sleep. The parents also completed the Je

Quality of life in sleep disorders.

Quality of life is a major outcome variable in choosing and evaluating treatment alternatives for sleep disorders. However, the number of well validated and sufficiently responsive quality of life measures for use with this population is limited. The SF-36, Nottingham Health Profile (NHP) and Sickness Impact Profile (SIP) are the most frequently used generic measures. The Functional Outcomes of Sleep Questionnaire (FOSQ) and Sleep Apnoea Quality of Life Index (SAQLI) are useful as condition/disease specific measures. However there are not yet specific measures in common use for other sleep dis

Quality of sleep in the medical department.

The quality of sleep in 134 patients admitted to two medical departments and an intensive coronary care unit was studied by comparing pre- and post-admission sleeping scores. Four aspects of sleep have been evaluated: duration of sleep; number of awakenings; personal assessment of quality of sleep; and the need for using sleeping pills. Results were expressed in scores ranging from 1 (worst) to 4 (best). A significant reduction in the mean quality of sleep for the entire group was found for all scores employed (P < 0.01-P < 0.001). Of the 134 patients, 51% had a reduction in post-admission tot

Quality of sleep and chronic illnesses.

The association between sleep complaints and chronic illnesses was investigated in several patient groups, including type-2 diabetics, patients with recent myocardial infarction, chronic paraplegia, affective disorders or rheumatic (musculoskeletal) disorders. Sleeping habits and complaints were investigated by questionnaire. All diagnoses were established by the rehabilitation team of the Rehabilitation Research Centre (RRC). The prevalence of difficulty in initiating sleep (DIS) and difficulty in maintaining sleep (DMS) was slightly higher in the myocardial infarction group than in their res
