Structure fires, smoke production, and smoke alarms.

Smoke inhalation injury causes severe morbidity and death. In the United States, the majority of fatalities from fire and burns occur because of inhalation of smoke. Medical treatment is only supportive; there is no known antidote to the damaging effects of smoke toxicants on pulmonary tissue. Without question, minimization of the morbidity and mortality that are caused by smoke inhalation is best accomplished by prevention of the injury. Effective prevention programs depend on a thorough and detailed understanding of the mechanism of damage caused by smoke, as well as of the available options

[Smoke poisoning].

UNLABELLED: SYSTEMIC AND LOCAL EFFECT: Smoke inhalation causes systemic and local, mainly respiratory, toxicity due to the asphyxiant and irritant properties of toxic gases. OXYGEN DEPRIVATION AND INTOXICATION: The syndrome of oxygen deprivation and intoxication by asphyxiant gases is caused by combustion-induced oxygen deprivation and exposure to carbon monoxide (CO) and cyanide (CN), but also to other toxic gases. A loss of consciousness is a good sign of systemic toxicity; however, the respective role of CO, CN and other toxic gases cannot be determined. The presence of apnea, lactic acido

Smoke inhalation.

Unfortunately, fires are common events both in urban and rural portions of the United States. Smoke inhalation is the leading fire-related cause of death. The elemental combustion products of fire are light, heat, and smoke. Smoke is a very complex mixture of potentially harmful substances. Although a relatively rare presenting event to small animal hospitals, when animal fire victims do appear, clinicians must know how to recognize the signs of smoke inhalation and how to successfully deal with them. This discussion will investigate the toxic nature of fire smoke, its mechanism of action upon

Why to smoke? Why not to smoke? Major reasons for children's decisions on whether or not to smoke.

UNLABELLED: This study, aimed at the primary prevention of smoking behaviour in children and adolescents, attempts to find the main factors that distinguish smokers and non-smokers in the period of their first experimentation with cigarettes. There are only a few studies dealing with investigations into current motivations of teenagers as to whether or not to smoke. The programme entitled "Normal is not to smoke", using evaluation questionnaires given to children in the 3rd and 5th classes, also contains--among many other things--specifics on reasons children have for making the decision wheth

Smoke inhalation injury.

Pulmonary injury due to smoke inhalation is a significant cause of death in fire victims. Singed nasal hair and carbonaceous sputum are easily recognized warning signs, but other subtle clues should prompt thorough evaluation and aggressive treatment. Dr Lee-Chiong describes the basic mechanisms of injury and discusses how to assess and manage complications caused by smoke inhalation.

Environmental tobacco smoke.

In 1992, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a "Черновик" assessment of ETS and lung cancer in adults and respiratory disorders in children. Relying on weak and inconclusive epidemiological data, the supposed similarity between ETS and MS, the presence of "known or suspected carcinogens" in MS and by extrapolation in ETS, and the "biological plausibility" of an adverse relationship between ETS and health, the EPA recommended that ETS be classified as a "Group A (known human) carcinogen." Fundamental physical and quantitative chemical differences among ETS, MS, and SS and human e

Smoke inhalation injury.

Smoke inhalation injury is a complex of disease processes best understood and treated when defined in terms of the time period after injury. The early phase (0 to 36 hrs) is characterized by diagnosis and treatment of carbon monoxide and cyanide toxicity and by management of early airways edema, bronchorrhea, and bronchoconstriction with aggressive pulmonary toilet. Between 1 and 5 days, the major characteristic is airways mucosal slough, tracheobronchitis, and increasing lung water and impaired gas exchange. Pulmonary toilet and infection control, as well as close management of fluid shifts,

Changes in Secondhand Smoke Exposure After Smoke-Free Legislation (Spain, 2006-2011).

INTRODUCTION: In 2011, the Spanish partial smoke-free legislation was extended to affect all enclosed settings, including hospitality venues and selected outdoor areas. This study evaluated the change in self-reported exposure to secondhand smoke among the adult, nonsmoking population. METHODS: Two cross-sectional surveys were conducted on nationally representative samples of the adult (≥18 years) nonsmoking Spanish population. One was conducted in 2006 (6 months after the first ban) and the other in 2011, 6 months after the new ban was implemented. We assessed the prevalence and 95% confiden

[Biomarkers of tobacco smoke].

In order to estimate the exposure of passive and active smokers to tobacco smoke one can use the questionnaire method or laboratory examination of chemical compounds being widely accepted exposure biomarkers. Substances that make such biomarkers include some of the tobacco smoke components and its metabolites formed in the body. The study discusses two groups of biomarkers. First, includes substances that serve as exposure markers of carcinogenous properties (metabolites of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, N-nitrosamines, trans, transmuconic acid, S-phenylmercapturic acid). Second group includ

Tobacco smoke is phototoxic.

BACKGROUND: Both cigarette smoke and ultraviolet (UV) radiation are known to cause changes of the skin which can be regarded as premature ageing. OBJECTIVES: To assess the theory that the effects of these two exposures could be linked by a phototoxic action of cigarette smoke. METHODS: A photohaemolysis test was used, in which human erythrocytes were incubated with cigarette smoke condensate, followed by UV irradiation and measurement of exposure-dependent haemolysis. RESULTS: Cigarette smoke condensate was clearly phototoxic. Photohaemolysis depended on the concentration of the condensate

Burns and smoke inhalation.

Smoke inhalation injury affects nearly one third of all major burn victims. Significant inhalation exposures must be suspected in persons who were entrapped in a closed space or who became unconscious during a fire. Each individual fire generates a characteristic smoke depending on the type of materials burnt, temperatures reached during pyrolysis, and the availability of oxygen to sustain combustion. In addition to variable amounts of thermal loads, firesmoke may contain mixtures of carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, nitrogen oxides, and other highly irritating gases. Each constituent of fire

Smoke inhalation: radiologic manifestations.

The medical records and radiographs of 62 patients admitted for smoke inhalation were reviewed to determine the value of the plain chest radiograph in the early detection of inhalation injury. Pulmonary edema resulting from the inhalation injury often leads to pulmonary insufficiency, and its early diagnosis is crucial to the management of patients with this condition. In addition to the usual presentation of pulmonary edema, subtle radiographic findings of interstitial edema such as perivascular fuzziness and peribronchial "cuffing" were observed. Of 56 patients with significant inhalation in

Tobacco and tobacco smoke.

Epidemiologic studies have demonstrated a causal relation between smoking of cigarettes and cancer of the lung in man. Women smokers, cigar, and pipe smokers also face an increased risk for lung cancer. Prospective and retrospective studies have found a correlation between smoking of cigarettes, cigars, and pipes and cancer of the oral cavity, larynx, and esophagus and for cigarette smokers increased risks to develop cancer of the pancreas, kidney, and urinary bladder. Dose responses have been established between number of cigarettes smoked and cancer of the respiratory and upper digestive tra

Secondhand Smoke and CKD.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Active smoking is associated with higher risk of various diseases. However, the risk of CKD development in nonsmokers exposed to secondhand smoke is not well elucidated. We aimed to investigate the association between secondhand smoke exposure and the risk of CKD development among never-smokers. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, & MEASUREMENTS: A total of 131,196 never-smokers with normal kidney function, who participated in the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study from 2001 to 2014, were analyzed. The participants were classified into three groups on the basis of freq

Toxicity of fire smoke.

This review is an attempt to present and describe the major immediate toxic threats in fire situations. These are carbon monoxide, a multitude of irritating organic chemicals in the smoke, oxygen depletion, and heat. During the past 50 years, synthetic polymers have been introduced in buildings in very large quantities. Many contain nitrogen or halogens, resulting in the release of hydrogen cyanide and inorganic acids in fire smoke as additional toxic threats. An analysis of toxicological findings in fire and nonfire deaths and the results of animal exposures to smoke from a variety of burning
