Sperm quality of healthy smokers, ex-smokers, and never-smokers.

The possible effects of cigarette smoking on sperm quality were investigated in a blind study of 333 healthy male volunteers 19 to 40 years of age. All subjects with clinically proven abnormalities, operations, or inflammatory diseases of the genital organs, exposure to radiation exceeding routine x-ray examination, or medication were excluded, and the data from 150 smokers, 37 ex-smokers, and 52 never-smokers were evaluated. There was a small but insignificant decrease in sperm density from never-smokers to ex-smokers and to smokers. Eight smokers (6%) had sperm counts less than 1 X 10(6)/ml,

Use of routine clinical preventive services among daily smokers, non-daily smokers, former smokers, and never-smokers.

INTRODUCTION: Studies examining differences in clinical preventive services between smokers and nonsmokers have yielded mixed results. While some have noted reduced rates of certain preventive services among smokers relative to nonsmokers, others have reported no differences based on smoking status. These inconsistencies may be due, at least in part, to the way in which smoking status was measured. The present investigation examined variability in utilization of six common preventive services including immunization (influenza and pneumococcal) and cancer screening (breast, cervical, colorectal

Patterns of depressive symptomatology in women smokers, ex-smokers, and never-smokers.

To investigate the possibility that specific symptom patterns contribute differentially to excess depression among smokers, we analyzed Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression (CES-D) and subscale scores in 931 women current smokers (CS), ex-smokers (ES), and never-smokers (NS). After adjusting for differences in age, education, and marital status, significant group differences were found for the CES-D overall and for Depressed Affect, Anhedonia, and Somatic Features, but not Interpersonal Distress. Both CS and ES scored significantly higher than NS on most measures, whereas differences

Bacterial adherence in smokers and non-smokers.

Bacterial adherence is thought to be a first important step in the pathogenesis of infection. It is now recognized that bacteria bind to and colonize mucosal surfaces in a highly selective manner via a lock- and key mechanism with complementary receptors on the mucosal surfaces of the host. We studied adherence to buccal cells of a panel of potential respiratory pathogens as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa in 18 smokers and 18 healthy non-smokers. Our results show an increased pneumococcal adherence in smokers compared to that

Supragingival dental biofilm microbiomes of tobacco heating system smokers, cigarette smokers and non-smokers.

OBJECTIVES: The study compared the bacterial composition of supragingival dental biofilm (SDB) among smokers and non-smokers (NS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 60 subjects allocated into three groups: tobacco heating system smokers (THSS), cigarette smokers (CS) and NS. SDB samples were collected, and bacterial DNA was extracted and prepared for next generation sequencing of the 16s rRNA gene hypervariable regions. Bioinformatic pipelines were applied to assess microbial diversity and taxonomic composition. RESULTS: No significant differences were observed in al

Comparison of native light daily smokers and light daily smokers who were former heavy smokers.

INTRODUCTION: An increasing proportion of daily smokers are light smokers (≤10 cigarettes per day). Some light smokers have never smoked more than 10 cigarettes per day (native light smokers) and others smoked at higher levels but have cut down (converted light smokers). It is important that we expand our understanding of these distinct subgroups of light smokers in order to develop effective interventions. METHODS: Data for this report come from a larger sample of smokers who completed a cross-sectional survey administered through an online panel survey service. The sample of 522 light smoke

Prepared and reactive inhibition in smokers and non-smokers.

INTRODUCTION: Models of addiction have identified deficits in inhibitory control, or the ability to inhibit inappropriate or unwanted behaviors, as one factor in the development and maintenance of addictive behaviors. Current literature supports disruption of the prefrontal circuits that mediate reactive inhibitory control processes (i.e., inhibition in response to sudden, unplanned changes in environmental demands) in substance use disorders. However, the relationship between disorders of addiction, such as nicotine dependence, and planned inhibitory processes (i.e., inhibition that occurs af

Quantitative fundus autofluorescence in smokers compared to non-smokers.

Increased fundus autofluorescence is directly related to increased RPE lipofuscin deposition in the retina and has been observed in eyes with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Smoking is the most significant modifiable risk factor for the development and progression of AMD, in which one of the main mechanisms is oxidative damage from smoking leading to RPE cell toxicity. The relationship between smoking and autofluorescence is not established and could provide insight into pathogenic mechanism of AMD. Therefore, our objective was to compare quantitative fundus autofluorescence (qAF) in t

Tracheobronchial submucous gland profiles in smokers and non-smokers.

We have recently presented a method of assessing the amount of submucous gland, expressed as volume per unit luminal surface area in the tracheobronchial tree. We have now applied this technique in the trachea, left main bronchus, left upper lobe bronchus, lingular bronchus and three generations of the inferior lingular bronchus in 14 non-smokers and 14 smokers. The results show that there was statistically significantly more gland in the smoking group than in the non-smoking group at all but the two most distal generations, so the technique could be used to assess the effects of inhaled pollu

[NO2 inhalation in two smokers and two non-smokers].

Four healthy men were exposed to an anti-rust substance in a stainless steel tank. Acute respiratory failure developed in two of them, both non-smokers. Their chest roentgenograms revealed marked infiltration, which suggested pulmonary edema due to the inhalation of NO2 and hydrogen fluoride. These two patients recovered from respiratory distress within several days. However, small airway disease was still evident one year later. The other two, who were smokers, had only mild respiratory symptoms. These cases indicate that smoking may reduce the sensitivity to NO2. Further study is needed to e

Differences in cardiovascular mortality in smokers, past-smokers and non-smokers: findings from the FRENA registry.

BACKGROUND: The influence of smoking on outcome in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) is controversial. Even less is known about its influence in patients with cerebrovascular (CVD), or peripheral artery (PAD) disease. PATIENTS AND METHODS: FRENA is an ongoing, observational registry of consecutive outpatients with symptomatic CAD, CVD, or PAD. We reviewed their cardiovascular mortality according to smoking status. RESULTS: As of May 2008, 2501 patients had been enrolled in FRENA. Of these, 439 (18%) were current smokers, 1086 (43%) past-smokers, 976 (39%) had never smoked. Current-

ECG Changes in Smokers and Non Smokers-A Comparative Study.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco consumption is the single most cause of the preventable deaths globally. Tobacco is consumed in the form of cigarettes. It contains nicotine which causes physical and psychological dependencies. Cigarette smoking increases the blood coagulability. Nicotine facilitates conduction block, re-entry and it increases the vulnerability to ventricular fibrillation. Hence, Nicotine and other components of cigarette can produce profound changes in the heart, which can be assessed by doing an ECG, which is the, cheapest and the most reliable method for assessing cardiovascular abnor

Classifying a smoker scale in adult daily and nondaily smokers.

INTRODUCTION: Smoker identity, or the strength of beliefs about oneself as a smoker, is a robust marker of smoking behavior. However, many nondaily smokers do not identify as smokers, underestimating their risk for tobacco-related disease and resulting in missed intervention opportunities. Assessing underlying beliefs about characteristics used to classify smokers may help explain the discrepancy between smoking behavior and smoker identity. This study examines the factor structure, reliability, and validity of the Classifying a Smoker scale among a racially diverse sample of adult smokers. M

Evaluation of clinical periodontal conditions in smokers and non-smokers.

Given that tobacco smoking habit is a risk factor for periodontal diseases, the aim of this study was to compare clinical periodontal aspects between smokers and non-smokers. The clinical status were assessed in 55 patients, 29 smokers and 26 non-smokers, aged 30 to 50 years, with mean age of 40. The clinical parameters used were: probing depth (PD), plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), clinical attachment level (CAL), gingival recession (GR) and gingival bleeding index (GBI) for arches (upper and lower) and teeth (anterior and posterior). Tooth loss was also evaluated in both groups. Multi

Investigation of periodontal destruction patterns in smokers and non-smokers.

BACKGROUND: Previous work has suggested that tobacco smoking has a local as well as a systemic effect on the severity of periodontal disease. OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that smokers have more disease in the upper anterior region. METHODS: A retrospective stratified random sample of 49 non-smokers and 39 heavy smokers (>or=20 cigarettes/day) was obtained from a total of 3678 referred patients with adult periodontitis. Probing depth data were collected from clinical records and radiographic measurements were carried out on existing dental panoramic tomographs to assess the inter-proxima

Histopathological characteristics of nasal polyps in smokers and non-smokers.

OBJECTIVE: It is known that cigarette smoking causes squamous metaplasia in upper and lower airways. We hypothesized that in patients with nasal polyposis, nasal polyps of smokers might reveal some histopathological changes and there might be an increased neoplasia risk. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to explore the effects of smoking on nasal polyp histopathology and clinical measures. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective chart review. SETTING: Fatih Sultan Mehmet Education and Research Hospital. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty smoker and 47 non-smoker patients with nasal polyposis who underwent e

Airway epithelial changes in smokers but not in ex-smokers with asthma.

RATIONALE: Smoking has detrimental effects on asthma outcome, such as increased cough, wheezing, sputum production, and frequency of asthma attacks. This results in accelerated lung function decline. The underlying pathological process of smoke-induced deterioration of asthma is unknown. OBJECTIVES: To compare bronchial inflammation and remodeling in never-smokers, ex-smokers, and current smokers with asthma. METHODS: A total of 147 patients with asthma (66 never-smokers, 46 ex-smokers, and 35 current smokers) were investigated. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Lung function, exhaled nitric o

Chemoprevention of lung carcinogenesis in addicted smokers and ex-smokers.

Chemoprevention of lung carcinogenesis is one approach to controlling the epidemic of lung cancer caused by cigarette smoking. The target for chemoprevention should be the activities of the multiple carcinogens, toxicants, co-carcinogens, tumour promoters and inflammatory compounds in cigarette smoke. At present there are many agents, both synthetic and naturally occurring, that prevent lung tumour development in well-established animal models. It seems likely that logically constructed mixtures of these agents, developed from the ground up, will be necessary for the prevention of lung carcino

DNA adducts in different tissues of smokers and non-smokers.

Purified DNA from human lung, liver, bladder, pancreas, breast and cervix has been analysed for DNA adducts using the nuclease P1 modification of the 32P post-labelling technique. Tissues were obtained at autopsy from 13 men and 6 women. Relatives were asked to provide information on smoking history for deceased subjects. All tissues examined except the breast had detectable adducts. In lung, bladder and pancreatic tissue a characteristic pattern of adducts was seen which has previously been reported as typical of cigarette-smoke-induced damage. Smokers and former smokers tended to have higher

[Prevalence of peptic ulcer in smokers and non-smokers in Aragon].

The present study has attempted to determine the prevalence of peptic ulcer (UP) in smokers and nonsmokers in the geographic region of Aragon (Spain) using a sample of 10,000 subjects, 1,897 with ulcer, 1,708 of them diagnosed by endoscopy. The prevalence of smokers is 42.4% (63% of males and 14% of females). The prevalence of peptic ulcer in smokers (26.87%) is double that of nonsmokers (13.38%) (p less than 0.05). In males, all of the locations (duodenal, duodenal + gastric and gastric) are more common among smokers than among nonsmokers. These differences do not exist in women, gastric ulce
