[Smoking prevention in preoperative patient factsheets].

INTRODUCTION: Information for patients undergoing elective surgery is often supported by factsheets. This information is required for ethical and legal reasons. Among the 11 million surgical procedures performed annually in France, three million concern smokers. Data of a 2005 French Expert's conference show that smoking doubles or triples the risk of postoperative complications and quitting smoking cancels this risk. METHODS: By a query on www.google.fr, 100 factsheets were collected in 2009 (pilot study) and 500 in 2012. These factsheets were systematically analyzed on tobacco information.

Smoking prevention: towards a process approach.

Current studies of smoking prevention treat the adolescent as a target of influence, they emphasize the acquisition of skills for resisting peer pressure and give too little attention to motivation for resistance. Studies consistent with this social learning framework show moderate reductions in the incidence of smoking for the short term; recent, long-term follow-ups show no reduction in experimental over control conditions. We propose a re-examination of the influence framework and suggest that adolescents use smoking and dress, to project an image of self that will increase the likelihood o

Hutchinson Smoking Prevention Project: long-term randomized trial in school-based tobacco use prevention--results on smoking.

BACKGROUND: No long-term impact has yet been observed with the use of the social-influences approach to school-based smoking prevention for youth. However, whether this lack of impact is due to methodologic problems with the studies or to the failure of the interventions is unclear. The Hutchinson Smoking Prevention Project (HSPP), conducted from September 1984 through August 1999, aimed to attain the most rigorous randomized trial possible to determine the long-term impact of a theory-based, social-influences, grade 3-12 intervention on smoking prevalence among youth. METHODS: Forty Washingt

[Prevention of coronary heart disease: smoking].

Smoking is the leading preventable cause of illness and premature death in Germany, claiming over 110,000 lives a year because it directly increases the risk of dying from heart disease, stroke, emphysema and a variety of cancers. The overwhelming majority of smokers begin tobacco use before they reach adulthood. Among those young people who smoke, the average age is now 13-14. In Germany, about 39% of male and 31% of female adults (age 18-60 years) continue to smoke, despite information about the unequivocally negative health consequences of smoking. The exact mechanisms of smoking-related va

The role of the pediatrician in smoking prevention.

Smoking prevention during childhood and adolescence is critical to the successful reduction of tobacco-related morbidity and mortality in the United States. The research literature is replete with surveys describing youth smoking acquisition and related factors. In addition to its direct harm, tobacco use may be a gateway to other substance abuse and a marker of other health-compromising behaviors. The pediatrician can play an important role in prevention by screening all patients and providing individual counseling. The pediatrician can also contribute as a consultant and advocate of school-

Smoking and potentially preventable hospitalisation: the benefit of smoking cessation in older ages.

AIMS: Reducing preventable hospitalisation is a priority for health systems worldwide. This study sought to quantify the contribution of smoking to preventable hospitalisation in older adults and the potential benefits of smoking cessation. METHODS: Self-reported smoking data for 267,010 Australian men and women aged 45+ years linked with administrative hospital data were analysed using Cox's models to estimate the effects on risk of hospitalisation for congestive heart failure (CHF), diabetes complications, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and angina. Personal Network Changes among Smoking Relapse Prevention Intervention Participants.

OBJECTIVES: Tobacco use remains a leading cause of preventable death in the United States, and relapse rates among those who quit smoking are alarmingly high. Personal networks (PNs) substantially influence smoking and quitting behaviors but have not been incorporated into relapse prevention approaches. Thus, we carried out a pilot study employing PNs in relapse prevention and measured changes in participants' PNs. METHODS: This pilot study was a single-group pre-post intervention where participants received Helpers Stay Quit (HSQ), a behavioral relapse prevention intervention we designed to

[Primary and secondary prevention of coronary heart disease: smoking].

Although smoking is one of the major risk factors for the development of atherosclerosis, the exact mechanism of smoking-related vascular disease is not known. Smoking causes acute hemodynamic alterations such as increase in heart rate, systemic and coronary vascular resistance, myocardial contractility, and myocardial oxygen demand. These short-term effects could lower the ischemic threshold in smokers with coronary artery disease and contribute to the increased risk for acute cardiovascular events. Endothelial damage is thought to be an initiating event in atherosclerosis and early studies h

[The pediatrician and cancer prevention. Dietetic factors and smoking].

Cancer has been associated to well-defined risk factors. Nutritional factors and tobacco are the most important causes of cancer deaths. Prevention should be based on health education. Beikost guidelines should be the early step to implement a healthy diet. American Cancer Society, US Department of Health and Human Services, and the National Academy of Sciences recommendations are analyzed. Recommendations include maintain a desirable body weight, eat a varied diet, include a variety of both vegetable and fruits, eat more high fiber foods, cutdown on total fat intake, limit consumption of alco

Patient rights and law: tobacco smoking in psychiatric wards and the Israeli Prevention of Smoking Act.

In August 2001, the Israeli Ministry of Health issued its Limitation of Smoking in Public Places Order, categorically forbidding smoking in hospitals. This forced the mental health system to cope with the issue of smoking inside psychiatric hospitals. The main problem was smoking by compulsorily hospitalized psychiatric patients in closed wards. An attempt by a psychiatric hospital to implement the tobacco smoking restraint instruction by banning the sale of cigarettes inside the hospital led to the development of a black market and cases of patient exploitation in return for cigarettes. This

Reducing tobacco smoking and smoke exposure to prevent preterm birth and its complications.

Tobacco smoking and smoke exposure during pregnancy are associated with a range of adverse health outcomes, including preterm birth. Also, children born preterm have a higher risk of complications including bronchopulmonary dysplasia and asthma when their mothers smoked during pregnancy. Smoking cessation in early pregnancy can help reduce the adverse impact on offspring health. Counselling interventions are effective in promoting smoking cessation and reducing the incidence of preterm birth. Peer support and incentive-based approaches are likely to be of additional benefit, whereas the effect

Strategies to Avoid Returning to Smoking (STARTS): a randomized controlled trial of postpartum smoking relapse prevention interventions.

The majority of women who quit smoking during pregnancy relapse postpartum and many experience increased depressive symptoms and concerns about body shape and weight. Given the relationship of weight concerns and negative mood to smoking relapse, interventions designed to address the postpartum experience are indicated. However, there are several challenges to research with postpartum women. We describe the rationale of a randomized controlled trial of postpartum smoking relapse prevention intervention and discuss methods to address the specific challenges to recruiting, retaining and conducti

Interventions for preventing tobacco smoking in public places.

BACKGROUND: Environmental tobacco smoke is a health hazard. Reducing exposure to tobacco smoke in public places is a widespread public health goal. There is, however, considerable variation in the extent to which this goal has been achieved in different settings and societies. There is therefore a need to identify effective strategies for reducing tobacco consumption in public places. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness of interventions to reduce tobacco consumption in public places. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Tobacco Addiction Review Group trials register, Medline, EMBASE, HEALT

Effect of postpartum lifestyle interventions on weight loss, smoking cessation, and prevention of smoking relapse: a systematic review.

UNLABELLED: Postpartum lifestyle interventions are recommended for women after pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia, intrauterine growth restriction, and/or gestational diabetes, since they are at increased cardiovascular risk. To identify potential intervention strategies to reduce this risk, a systematic review of the literature is presented on the effectiveness of postpartum lifestyle interventions aimed at weight loss, smoking cessation, and smoking relapse prevention. The main characteristics of these postpartum lifestyle interventions are briefly described. The PubMed, Embase, Web of

Development of a Targeted Smoking Relapse-Prevention Intervention for Cancer Patients.

We describe the series of iterative steps used to develop a smoking relapse-prevention intervention customized to the needs of cancer patients. Informed by relevant literature and a series of preliminary studies, an educational tool (DVD) was developed to target the unique smoking relapse risk factors among cancer patients. Learner verification interviews were conducted with 10 cancer patients who recently quit smoking to elicit feedback and inform the development of the DVD. The DVD was then refined using iterative processes and feedback from the learner verification interviews. Major changes

Prevention. Part 1: smoking cessation advice within the general dental practice.

Smoking remains the largest single preventable cause of death and disability in the UK and costs the NHS 1.7 billion pound each year. More than 120,000 people die prematurely due to smoking related diseases. Worldwide smoking is the single most important public health problem. The detrimental effects of smoking and tobacco use on oral health are well recognised. Oral cancers and pre-cancers, periodontal diseases and poor wound healing are the most significant and serious effects of smoking on the mouth. In addition, staining of the teeth, soft tissue changes and halitosis are aesthetic and soc

Postpartum Behavioral Sleep Intervention for Smoking Relapse Prevention: A Pilot Trial.

OBJECTIVES: Rates of postpartum smoking relapse are high (70-90%) but standard relapse prevention interventions are not effective postpartum. This pilot study evaluated effects of a combined relapse prevention and sleep intervention on sleep and relapse to smoking. METHODS: Twenty-eight postpartum mothers were assigned to the intervention group-combined relapse prevention and behavioral sleep intervention-or to the comparison group-relapse prevention alone. Questionnaires and actigraphy were completed at baseline (1-week postpartum), post-treatment (8-weeks postpartum), and follow-up (12-week

Smoking cessation: strategies and effects in primary and secondary cardiovascular prevention.

Although smoking is seen as a major health problem by most clinicians, few are able to provide evidence based smoking cessation interventions to their patients. Most individuals who smoke actually want to quit. Unfortunately, smoking is still seen as a vice or lifestyle choice, when it is actually a chronic disease which often starts in adolescence. Nicotine dependence is complex and must be quantified and treated differently for each patient in order to achieve high quit rates. Smoking has a significant impact on the development and progression of cardiovascular disease. Smoking cessation is
