Altogether 11 cases of stings in dogs are reported. In at least nine cases, common vipers (Vipera berus) were identified to be the causes. The most frequently observed symptoms were haemorrhagic and oedematous inflammations of the area of the wounds, furthermore haemolysis and intense leukocytosis with relative and absolute neutrophilia and in some cases shock symptoms. One dog died 17 days after the accident from multiple organ insufficiencies, all the other dogs improved. As a therapy, bandage of the injured limb, quieting of the dog, snake antitoxin, corticosteroids, antihistaminics, antibi

Primary care physicians may be required to treat snake-bitten patients and must differentiate between venomous and nonvenomous snakes. The chief distinguishing characteristics of venomous snakes are fangs and a single row of subcaudal anal plates. The physiologic effects of snake venom are on the cardiovascular, hematologic, and neurovascular systems. The snake-bitten patient first needs supportive treatment and stabilization. Then, the physician must establish whether envenomation has occurred, grade it, and monitor edema around the bite. Local treatment, broad-spectrum antibiotics, and tetan

A defibrination syndrome developed in two men (aged 51, and 29 years old) within two hours of having been bitten by vipers Echis carinatus and Agkistrodon halys, respectively. In both the syndrome was characterized by afibrinogenemia with prolongation of the thrombin time, presence of fibrin monomers and split products of fibrinogen. Haemorrhagic signs included oral mucosa bleeding and macrohematuria. Specific serum was administered 9 and 16 hours, respectively, after the bite and achieved normalization of all clotting values within 48 hours.

Snake venom toxins have evolved to affect many prey physiological systems including hemostasis and thrombosis. These toxins belong to a diverse array of protein families and can initiate or inhibit multiple stages of the coagulation pathway or platelet aggregation with incredible specificity. Such specificity toward vertebrate molecular targets has made them extremely useful for diagnosis of human diseases or as molecular scalpels in physiological studies. The large number of yet-to-be characterized venoms provides a vast potential source of novel toxins and subsequent cardiovascular therapeut

Exotic snake bites are not rare in Switzerland. Treatment can be challenging for medical staff particularly as rapid and focused management are critical to improve patient outcome. The case of a young herpetologist bitten by an exotic venomous snake is used to review measures to be taken before arrival at the emergency department and to highlight key points of management. Resources for the obtention of expert advice and antivenoms are also reported.

Epidemiological features as reflected by 101 patients with unequivocal sea-snake bite received in north-west Malaya are reviewed. Enhydrina schistosa caused over half the bites, including seven of the eight fatal bites. It is the most dangerous sea-snake to man. Over 90 per cent of the victims were male and 80 of the 101 patients were fishermen bitten at their job. Most victims were bitten on the lower limb through treading on the snake, and this resulted in more cases of serious poisoning than upper limb bites (caused through handling nets, sorting fish and so on). Only 14 cathers were bitten

North American coral snakes are distinctively colored beginning with a black snout and an alternating pattern of black, yellow, and red. They have fixed front fangs and a poorly developed system for venom delivery, requiring a chewing action to inject the venom. The severity of a coral snake bite is related to the volume of venom injected and the size of the victim. The length of the snake correlates positively with the snakes venom yield. Coral snake venom is primarily neurotoxic with little local tissue reaction or pain at the bite site. The net effect of the neurotoxins is a curare like syn

Neurologic dysfunction due to natural neurotoxins is an important, but neglected, public health hazard in many parts of the world, particularly in the tropics. These toxins are produced by or found among a variety of live forms that include venomous snakes, arthropods such as scorpions, spiders, centipedes, stinging insects (Hymenoptera), ticks, certain poisonous fish, shellfish, crabs, cone shells, skin secretions of dart-poison frogs, and bacterial poisons such as botulinum toxin. These toxins commonly act on neuromuscular transmission at the neuromuscular junction where acetylcholine is the

Four families of venomous snakes are found in Nigeria--Viperidae, Elapidae, Colubridae and Actraspididae but three species carpet viper (Echis ocellatus), black-necked spitting cobra (Naja nigricollis) and puff adder (Bitis arietans), belonging to the first two families, are the most important snakes associated with envenoming in Nigeria. The incidence of bites has been reported as 497 per 100,000 population per year with a 12 percent natural mortality, with Echis ocellatus accounting for at least 66 percent in certain foci. Bites occur more often while victims were farming, herding or walking

Authors treated five patients who suffered venomous snake-bite injury. Although these snakes are not native in Hungary, this kind of injury is estimated to be more frequent, because of the increasing number of the private collections and illegal import of these reptiles. The local and general symptoms, the therapeutic steps are summarised in this study considering the literature as well. Two patients did not show any systemic or local symptoms at the level of injury, they needed only short observation, and woundcare. The other three patients had serious transient systematic symptoms (vasolabil

Four patients were admitted with respiratory muscle paralysis following an elapid snake bite. Two were treated with antivenine, repeated doses of neostigmine and artificial ventilation; the other two with artificial ventilation only. There was no clinically significant difference in recovery. It is suggested that one should avoid the use of antivenine and neostigmine in the management of elapid snake bite once muscle paralysis has become established.

Management of a patient with snake bite is influenced by the nature of the offending snake. Species diagnosis based on the patient's history and physical signs is often unreliable and the possibility of making a species diagnosis by immunological means has therefore been investigated. Wound aspirates, blister fluids, sera, and urine samples from patients with snake bite were examined for the presence of species-specific venoms using immunodiffusion. A positive species diagnosis was made in 40 out of 101 patients. Immunodiagnosis was especially successful in patients bitten by the puff adder, B

In 7 years snake bite was diagnosed in 80 dogs. Sporting breeds figured prominently. The average was 3.6 years. The commonest presenting signs were salivation, vomiting, dilated pupils, absence of the pupillary light reflex, depression and generalised muscle weakness, hindlimb ataxia and respiratory distress. Sixty-seven cases (84%) occurred in 6 warmer months on the year. Fifty-one dogs (64%) were seen either to be bitten or in contact with a snake. Tiger and Brown snakes were implicated on 32 and 3 occasions respectively. An overall recovery rate of 87% was obtained for patients receiving an

IMPORTANCE: Venomous snake and spider bites are relatively rare in the Unites States and even more so in the pregnant population. However, the impact of a venomous bite, also known as an envenomation, can be serious in a pregnant patient. Thus, providers in endemic and high-risk areas must be familiar with the management of envenomation in the pregnant population.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to review the current literature on the most common snake and spider envenomations in the United States, the effects of envenomation on maternal and fetal health, and the management of enven

Electroencephalograms (EEGs) were obtained for 26 patients with snake bite to observe the cerebral impact of snake venom. All snakes were identified; 19 (73%) were Russell's vipers, one (4%) was a common cobra, five (19%) were hump-nosed vipers, and one (4%) was a dog-faced fresh water snake. The EEG was abnormal in 25 patients (96%) and these results included all the snake species identified. The EEG abnormalities observed were reduced alpha activity, increased theta/beta activity or sharp waves (grade 1), sharp waves or spikes and slow waves (grade 2), or diffuse delta activity (grade 3). It is estimated that every year about 500 000 people around the world are bitten by poisonous snakes. Between 30 000 to 50 000 persons die due to snake-bites; the highest frequency is reported from Southern Asia. Clinically three types of snake-bites can be distinguished: 1. Bites with local damage (extreme pain, edema, necrosis), 2. Bites followed by generalized hemorrhagic symptoms and 3. bites with neurotoxic effects of the poison (no local pain, paralysis of cerebral nerves, coma). For tropical snake-bites snake-venom is live-saving. As in many cases the biting animal cannot be identified

OBJECTIVE: To determine the extent of the snake bite problem in domestic animals, its regional significance and the effects of antivenom treatment.
DESIGN: A questionnaire was designed seeking information on the number and type of domestic animals referred, whether treated or untreated, type of snakes and management of the bite.
PROCEDURE: The survey form was sent to 10% of veterinary surgeons, selected at random throughout Australia.
RESULTS: The response of 106 veterinary surgeons revealed that snake bite in domestic animals is frequent, with an estimated 6200 cases reported annually. Bit
