[Social competence in children with social adjustment disorders].

Teachers and parents of a sample of 1774 students at three grade levels (4th, 6th and 8th grades) were asked to judge the social competence of the children by means of the social competence questionnaire by Buhrmester et al. (1988). These ratings were correlated with the social status of the pupils, with peer statements on aggressive behavior and victimization and with the teachers' ratings of behavior in class and towards fellow pupils. Teachers proved to be more critical than parents, crediting boys with less social competence than girls, though this difference diminished in the higher grade

Social support, social adjustment, and recovery status in bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: To examine recovery status in bulimia nervosa (BN) and its relation to social support and social adjustment. METHOD: Using a cross-sectional design, we administered the modified Social Support Questionnaire and the Social Adjustment Scale-Self-Report (SAS-SR) to 40 women, each of whom was actively bulimic (ABN), was in remission from BN (RBN), or had no history of eating disturbance (comparison). RESULTS: In terms of social support, relative to RBN and comparison subjects, the ABN group had significantly fewer persons in their friendship and kinship networks available to provide e

Epilepsy and children's social and psychological adjustment.

This research investigates the effects of epilepsy on the social and psychological adjustment of the children studied in the National Health Interview Survey of 1988. Analyses examine the effect of epilepsy on four measures of adjustment--home behavior problems, school behavior problems, depressed mood, and impulsiveness. For each outcome, we address five questions: (1) Do children with currently active epilepsy have poorer adjustment than children with inactive epilepsy? (2) Do children with epilepsy fare worse than other children? (3) Do demographic background and family structure moderate t

Social adjustment in panic-agoraphobic patients reconsidered.

Forty-eight depressed panic-agoraphobic patients--clinically matched for severity of depression with 35 primary chronic depressives--had significantly better adjustment in most areas of social functioning, especially those related to interpersonal contact, work, leisure activities, and sexual life. Even when depressed, panic-agoraphobic patients appear to possess sufficient interpersonal skills--that is, by learning on significant others--to engage in a range of social activities, both at home and beyond. These data, which are open to different interpretations, nonetheless suggest that anxiety

Social support, social constraint, and psychological adjustment in patients with colorectal cancer.

Cancer patients' social networks, particularly their spouses or romantic partners, can promote or undermine their psychological adjustment. This study examined the relative associations of partner social support and social constraint with patients' psychological adjustment and further tested gender's moderating role in these associations. Participants were 124 patients newly diagnosed with colorectal cancer (M age = 56.6 years, 34% female), who completed questionnaires on perceived spousal social support and social constraint, depressive symptoms, and life satisfaction. Findings revealed that

Social adjustment experiences of adolescents with Tourette syndrome.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To explore and describe the experience of social adjustment of adolescents with Tourette syndrome in Taiwan. BACKGROUND: Although Tourette syndrome is a non-life-threatening disease, the inherent difficulties in controlling tics and comorbidities can cause long-term physical and psychological issues, as well as social maladjustment among adolescents. Good social adjustment can promote mental health among adolescents. Currently, it is not clear how adolescents with Tourette syndrome can self-adjust and maintain harmonious social interaction with others. DESIGN: Descriptiv

Psychological and social adjustment in older transsexual people.

Several forces conspire to make the later decades a climacteric for transgendered persons. This paper will examine the social, emotional, and hormonal influences that entwine and challenge the stability of the elderly transgendered person. Case studies and therapeutic interventions will be addressed. Within our article, the cases are fictitious and therefore consent was not required for our vignettes.

Friendships of children and adolescents with spina bifida: social adjustment, social performance, and social skills.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize dyadic and general friendships of youth with spina bifida (SB). METHODS: Families of youth with SB recruited a peer to participate; 106 dyads participated. Youth with SB and peers completed questionnaires and interviews regarding characteristics of the dyadic friendship and each individual's general friendships. RESULTS: Youth with SB and their peers were similar in many ways. However, youth with SB rated the friendship as closer and were more likely to see peers as best friends rather than the reverse. Regarding general friendships, youth with SB spent fewer days

Work and social adjustment in patients with anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: The Work and Social Adjustment Scale (WSAS) assesses patients' perceptions of impairment in everyday functioning and has been reported as a simple and reliable self-report measure in different psychiatric disorders. This study compared WSAS data from an anorexia nervosa (AN) patient group with that from healthy controls (HCs) and published data from other patient groups. A total of 160 female participants (AN, 77; HC, 83) completed the WSAS as well as measures of eating disorder symptom severity and brief assessments of anxiety and depression. RESULTS: Work and Social A

Systemic juvenile rheumatoid arthritis: cognitive function and social adjustment.

In contrast with other systemic rheumatic diseases in childhood, no systematic studies exist that focus on possible long-term risks for central nervous system involvement in systemic juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (SJRA). We investigated 31 children and adolescents with SJRA, aged 6 to 24 years (mean, 12.5 years; standard deviation, 4.3 years), with mean disease duration of 6.2 years (standard deviation, 3.5 years; range, 0.6-14 years) for their cognitive and fine motor abilities. We also examined 31 matched healthy control subjects. In addition, parents assessed social activities and social an

Children with physical handicaps and their mothers: the interrelation of social support, maternal adjustment, and child adjustment.

Examined the interrelation of maternal adjustment, mother-child interaction, and child adjustment in 29 families of children with spina bifida and without mental retardation and in 28 families of children without handicaps. A multivariate, ecological model proposed that adjustment of mother and child depends on the adaptiveness of maternal response to the stress of the physical handicap and on the ability of mothers to create an optimal caregiving environment through mother-child interaction. Analyses examining the relationships among maternal social support, maternal psychological adjustment,

Social adjustment based on reported behaviour in bipolar affective disorder.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the effects of mood and additional clinical variables on different domains of current interviewer-rated social adjustment reflecting the reported behaviour of patients with bipolar disorder (BD). METHOD: Multi-center cross-sectional study employing multiple linear regression to investigate whether mood and other clinical features, previously linked to self-rated social adjustment, were associated with eight domains of interviewer-rated social adjustment in 253 BD patients. Baseline variables were entered sequentially in blocks representing current mood, demographic, c

Social adjustment in in-patients with affective disorders: predictive factors.

We assessed social adjustment in 145 depressed in-patients using the self-reporting Social Adjustment Scale (42-item version) to evaluate the contribution of demographic and clinical variables and examine social functioning at different levels of depression. Our results indicate that the presence of a psychopathology in association with interpersonal sensitivity, hostility and perceived social support aspects -- and not the severity of current depressive symptoms -- were the most important factors affecting social adjustment. As expected, social disturbances are more pronounced in severe depre

Social adjustment over 10 years following diagnosis with bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: The authors sought to describe social adjustment among women diagnosed with bulimia nervosa more than a decade earlier. METHOD: A cohort of women who were diagnosed with bulimia nervosa between 1981 and 1987 were located and invited to participate in follow-up assessments. RESULTS: Although the current sample demonstrated considerable improvement in disordered eating behaviors and social adjustment, measures of social adjustment suggested continued impairment in interpersonal relationships and only a modest association with eating disorder outcome. DISCUSSION: Continued difficult

Social support and adjustment in chronically ill and handicapped children.

The relationship between social support and adjustment was investigated in children with a chronic physical illness or handicap. Mothers of 153 children with juvenile diabetes, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, chronic obesity, spina bifida, or cerebral palsy reported on these children's family support, peer support, externalizing behavior problems, and internalizing behavior problems. Children reported as having high social support from both family and peers showed a significantly better adjustment than those with high social support from only one of these sources. Chronically ill or physically

Household chaos, emotion regulation and social adjustment in preschool children.

Social adjustment is critical to preschool children's overall development and well-being. Household chaos and emotion regulation are important influencing factors that affect young children's social adjustment. Our study examines the interplay between household chaos and social adjustment among preschool children and investigates the mediating function of emotion regulation. Three parent report scales with sufficient reliability and validity were completed by parents from six kindergartens: the Confusion, Hubbub and Order Scale (CHAOS), Emotion Regulation Checklist (ERC), and Social Competence

We contrasted the overall social functioning of pure dysthymics, double depressives, episodic major depressives and normal controls using both interview and self-report measures of social functioning and depression. In addition, we used hierarchical multiple regression to assess the differential impact of several variables (comorbid personality, anxiety and substance use disorders, life stress, duration of dysthymia and severity of depressive symptomatology) on social functioning in the dysthymics and double depressives. Participants included 41 outpatients with early-onset dysthymia alone, 56

Families of young adolescents who have survived cancer: social-emotional adjustment, adaptability, and social support.

Young adolescent (10-15 year old) survivors of childhood cancer and their families (n = 35) completed self-report measures of perceived self-competence, social support, child behavior, parental distress, and family adaptability and cohesion, at two data points, 6 months apart. Relative to instrument norms and a comparison group (n = 13), survivors and their families scored within normative levels. The overall lack of group differences is discussed in terms of the implications of tests of the null hypothesis for families with chronically ill children. Changes over time for the survivors suggest
