A frequently noted but largely anecdotal behavioral observation in Williams syndrome (WS) is an increased tendency to approach strangers, yet the basis for this behavior remains unknown. We examined the relationship between affect identification ability and affiliative behavior in participants with WS relative to a neurotypical comparison group. We quantified social behavior from self-judgments of approachability for faces, and from parent/other evaluations of real life. Relative to typical individuals, participants with WS were perceived as more sociable by others, exhibited perceptual defici

The present study aimed to investigate how online and offline social behavior interact with each other ultimately to affect the well-being of socially anxious adolescents. Based on previous studies, it was assumed that there might be three-way interactive effects among online social behavior, offline social behavior, and social anxiety regarding the relationship with well-being. To measure social anxiety, online and offline social behavior, and mental well-being, self-report questionnaires such as the Korean-Social Avoidance and Distress Scale, Korean version of the Relational Maintenance Beha

Relationship quality is a strong predictor of health outcomes, and individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) report increased interpersonal impairment. However, there are few studies testing the effect of SAD on friendships and it is thus unclear whether there are behavioral differences that distinguish friendships in which a target individual has SAD from friendships in which the target individual does not have SAD. We tested for differences in the provision and receipt of support behaviors as a function of having a SAD diagnosis and accounting for comorbid depressive symptoms. Participa

This paper reports about 5 years experience with the therapy program of the social therapeutical ward/that was specially developed for adolescents with conduct disorders. Special attention is devoted to the problem behavior of the adolescents during the in-patient stay, the treatment, approaches and the future prospects of the adolescents after discharge from the social therapeutical ward. It is shown, that the major intentions of the concept of the social therapeutical ward could be put into practice. However, the analysis also displays problems with the application of this concept, that coul

Mounting evidence from animal models and human studies indicates that psychostimulants can significantly affect social behaviors. This is not surprising considering that the neural circuits underlying the regulation and expression of social behaviors are highly overlapped with those targeted by psychostimulants, which in most cases have strong rewarding and, consequently, addictive properties. In the present work, we provide an overview regarding the effects of illicit and prescription psychostimulants, such as cocaine, amphetamine-type stimulants, methylphenidate or modafinil, upon social beh

As humans rely on social groups for survival, social motivation is central to behavior and well-being. Here we define social motivation as the effort that initiates and directs behavior towards social outcomes, with the goal of satisfying our fundamental need for connection. We propose an integrated framework of social motivation which emphasizes the maintenance of optimal connection levels through effort exertion, regulating social approach and avoidance, which allow interpersonal synchrony. Together, these behaviors serve as basic building blocks of social behavior, and give rise to behavior

Social interaction is integral to animal behavior. However, lacking tools to describe it in quantitative and rigorous ways has limited our understanding of its structure, underlying principles, and the neuropsychiatric disorders, like autism, that perturb it. Here, we present a technique for high-resolution 3D tracking of postural dynamics and social touch in freely interacting animals, solving the challenging subject occlusion and part-assignment problems using 3D geometric reasoning, graph neural networks, and semi-supervised learning. We collected over 110 million 3D pose samples in interac

Accumulating evidence suggests that the cerebellum plays a crucial role not only in the motor and cognitive domains but also in emotions and social behavior. In the present chapter, after a general introduction on the significance of the emotional components of social behavior, we describe recent efforts to understand the contributions of the cerebellum in social cognition focusing on the emotional and affective aspects. Specifically, starting from the description of the cerebello-cortical networks subtending the social-affective domains, we illustrate the most recent findings on the social ce

Social interactions are essential for the survival of individuals and the reproduction of populations. Social stressors, such as social defeat and isolation, can lead to emotional disorders and cognitive impairments. Furthermore, dysfunctional social behaviors are hallmark symptoms of various neuropsychiatric disorders, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Consequently, understanding the neural circuit mechanisms underlying social behaviors has become a major focus in neuroscience. Social behaviors, which encompass a wide range of expressions and

Recent advances in circuit manipulation technologies have enabled the association of distinct neural circuits with complex social behaviors. The brain areas identified through historical anatomical characterizations as mediators of sexual and parental behaviors can now be functionally linked to adult social behaviors within a unified circuit. In vivo electrophysiology, optogenetics and chemogenetics have been used to follow the processing of social sensory stimuli from perception by the olfactory system to valence detection by the amygdala and mesolimbic dopamine system to integration by the c

Human behavior is influenced by the social context and depends on emotional state. This study focuses on the effect of the presence of others and group in interaction with the emotional impact on motor, cognitive and affective performance. Seventy-four subjects participated in the study. Each participant performed a dart shooting action in three conditions: the individual, presence of others, and group presence. Motion kinematics were detected using Adope Premier software and affective states were recorded using a Deep-learning facial expression recognition model. Performance analysis revealed

Aggression is a transdiagnostic behavior that is associated with poor clinical outcomes. As such, it is important to understand factors that contribute to various manifestations of aggressive behavior. Recent research has revealed a subtype of individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) who tend to display relatively high amounts of aggression and experience more severe social anxiety and dysfunction compared to individuals in the prototypical SAD group. The current study used a status threat manipulation along with behavioral indices of aggression to examine the impact of paranoia and soci

Disrupted social connectedness is associated with suicidal thoughts and behaviors among individuals with substance use disorders (SUDs). The current study sought to further characterize this relationship by examining several indices of social connectedness--(a) living alone, (b) perceived social support, (c) interpersonal conflict, and (d) belongingness. Participants (n = 814) were recruited from 4 residential substance-use treatment programs and completed self-report measures of social connectedness as well as whether they had ever thought about or attempted suicide. Multivariate results indi

BACKGROUND: Social phobia is a type of performance and interpersonal anxiety disorder and as such may be associated with sexual dysfunction and avoidance. The aim of the present study was to evaluate sexual function and behavior in patients with social phobia compared with mentally healthy subjects.
METHOD: Eighty subjects participated in the study: 40 consecutive, drug-free outpatients with social phobia (DSM-IV) attending an anxiety disorders clinic between November 1997 and April 1999 and 40 mentally normal controls. The Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders and the Lie

Two hundred and sixty college students completed a questionnaire that provided information regarding their sexual experience, knowledge, and attitudes; their self-evaluations on dimensions related to sexuality; and their level of heterosocial anxiety (anxiety experienced in social interactions with members of the other sex). Compared with subjects low in heterosocial anxiety, highly anxious respondents were less sexually experienced, engaged in sexual activity less frequently, had fewer sexual partners, were less likely to have engaged in oral sex, expressed a higher degree of apprehension abo

Social interactions play a key role in animal survival and reproduction, shaping mating success, cooperation, competition, and the transmission of information and disease. Across species, the social environment not only influences behavior but also feeds back on physiology, stress responses, and evolutionary trajectories. Despite this central importance, the molecular signals that control how animals sense and respond to one another remain incompletely understood. Drosophila melanogaster provides a powerful model to probe these mechanisms, as it combines a rich repertoire of social behaviors w

We have developed a multi variate analysis of social communication behavior which allows for discriminating the emotional state of an agent interacting with other agents (Bouquet method). Domestic chick or common marmoset was reared under socially isolated conditions, later tested for its development of communication behavior with peers by Bouquet, and compared with that of animals reared under grouping conditions. We found the existence of high sensitive period for social interaction, given less experience, developing less affiliated behavior. From chick model, a couple of neuronal difference

This longitudinal study of 1,447 first-time college students tested separate time-varying covariate models of the relations between academic and social motives/behaviors and alcohol use and related problems from senior year of high school through the end of the second year in college. Structural equation models identified small but significant inverse relations between academic motives/behaviors and alcohol use across all time points, with relations of somewhat larger magnitude between academic motives/behaviors and alcohol-related problems across all semesters other than senior year in high s
