[Inpatient social therapy in adolescents with social behavior disorders].

This paper reports about 5 years experience with the therapy program of the social therapeutical ward/that was specially developed for adolescents with conduct disorders. Special attention is devoted to the problem behavior of the adolescents during the in-patient stay, the treatment, approaches and the future prospects of the adolescents after discharge from the social therapeutical ward. It is shown, that the major intentions of the concept of the social therapeutical ward could be put into practice. However, the analysis also displays problems with the application of this concept, that coul

Social Anxiety Disorder and Social Support Behavior in Friendships.

Relationship quality is a strong predictor of health outcomes, and individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) report increased interpersonal impairment. However, there are few studies testing the effect of SAD on friendships and it is thus unclear whether there are behavioral differences that distinguish friendships in which a target individual has SAD from friendships in which the target individual does not have SAD. We tested for differences in the provision and receipt of support behaviors as a function of having a SAD diagnosis and accounting for comorbid depressive symptoms. Participa

[Perception of social rank and submissive behavior in eating disorders].

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is to study the social behavior in patients with eating disorders, in particular the presence of low social ranking and high submissive behavior. We also considered the relationship between these factors and the presence of some personality traits and pathological eating behaviors. METHOD: We performed a case-control study on 249 young women (124 controls and 125 eating disorders subjects). Eating disorders were diagnosed as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and eating disorders non otherwise specified. The patients underwent a routine assessment by means of a

Cognitive-behavioral models of social anxiety disorder.

In 1985, Liebowitz et al labeled SAD the "neglected anxiety disorder." Clearly, times have changed. Although it took 10 years after this pronouncement for the first cognitive-behavioral model of SAD to be introduced, a great deal of research has been carried out and a great deal has been learned since then. The core features of these models seem to hold a great deal of validity. Perhaps the greatest "learning curve" has been seen in work done on the processing of the self as social object, a component of both cognitive-behavioral models of SAD. A great deal of empiric evidence now suggests tha

Cognitive-behavioral therapy for social anxiety disorder.

Research on the treatment of SAD has progressed so that patients have a choice between two empirically supported modalities of treatment: (1) CBT and (2) pharmacotherapy. Current studies suggest that acute outcome for these treatments is approximately equal, or show subtle advantages for pharmacotherapy, but that CBT offers the advantage of strong maintenance of treatment gains and a relatively promising cost-benefit ratio. Despite this good news, there is concern that these modalities of treatment may be underutilized in clinical practice and that an informed choice of which modality of treat

Promoting social behavior with oxytocin in high-functioning autism spectrum disorders.

Social adaptation requires specific cognitive and emotional competences. Individuals with high-functioning autism or with Asperger syndrome cannot understand or engage in social situations despite preserved intellectual abilities. Recently, it has been suggested that oxytocin, a hormone known to promote mother-infant bonds, may be implicated in the social deficit of autism. We investigated the behavioral effects of oxytocin in 13 subjects with autism. In a simulated ball game where participants interacted with fictitious partners, we found that after oxytocin inhalation, patients exhibited str

The effect of intranasally administered oxytocin on observed social behavior in social anxiety disorder.

Research has shown that patients with a social anxiety disorder (SAD) show social performance deficits. These deficits are a maintaining factor in SAD, as mending social behavior improves interpersonal judgments and reduces social anxiety. Thus finding ways to enhance social behavior is evidently of importance in the treatment of SAD. This double-blind, placebo-controlled study investigated the effect of an intranasal administration of the hormone oxytocin (24 IU) on social behavior and anxious appearance in SAD patients (N = 40) and healthy controls (N = 39). Forty minutes after oxytocin admi

Rodent models for mood disorders - understanding molecular changes by investigating social behavior.

Mood disorders, including depressive and bipolar disorders, are the group of psychiatric disorders with the highest prevalence and disease burden. However, their pathophysiology remains poorly understood. Animal models are an extremely useful tool for the investigation of molecular mechanisms underlying these disorders. For psychiatric symptom assessment in animals, a meaningful behavioral phenotype is needed. Social behaviors constitute naturally occurring complex behaviors in rodents and can therefore serve as such a phenotype, contributing to insights into disorder related molecular changes

Safety behaviors and positive emotions in social anxiety disorder.

The present study examined contextual factors that affect safety behavior use as well as positive emotions when using safety behaviors among individuals with SAD. Eighty-eight participants took part in the study, half (n = 44) met diagnostic criteria for SAD and half (n = 44) did not meet criteria for SAD. Participants completed a 21-day experience sampling methodology (ESM) measurement in which they reported on daily social interactions, safety behavior use, and emotions. Using multilevel linear modeling we found that both individuals with and without SAD used more safety behaviors when inter

Social Behavior in Animal Models of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by social deficits and stereotyped, repetitive patterns of behaviors, limited interests, and cognitive impairment. Especially, social deficit has been considered a core feature of ASD. Because of the limitations of the experimental approach in humans, valid animal models are essential in an effort to identify novel therapeutics for social deficits in ASD. The genetic and environmental factors are clinically relevant to the pathophysiology of ASD. Epidemiological studies demonstrate environmental interventions

Cognitive-behavioral approaches to the treatment of social anxiety disorder.

The current paper provides an overview of and evidence for the cognitive-behavioral formulation of social anxiety. In addition, the paper presents the theory supporting an empirical basis for the use of exposure and cognitive restructuring in the treatment of social anxiety disorder. Finally, the paper concludes with a review of the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral treatments for social anxiety disorder, including a comparison with psychopharmacological treatments. Both cognitive-behavioral and pharmacological interventions appear to be effective for social anxiety disorder, with relative

[Cognitive-behavioral therapy for treatment of social anxiety disorder].

There is good evidence for the effectiveness of exposure-based cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) in the treatment of social anxiety disorder (SAD). In this article, the Clark's cognitive model of SAD is presented, followed by the description of general CBT strategies, such as the shift from internal to external attention and the correction of anticipatory/postevent processing. Typical schemata in SAD and comorbid avoidant personality disorder are then illustrated, along with schema-focused approaches. Finally, a four-step CBT for SAD is suggested.

Childhood body-focused behaviors and social behaviors as risk factors of eating disorders.

BACKGROUND: The risk factors for adolescent eating disorders are poorly understood. It is generally agreed, however, that interactions with one's body and interactions with others are two important features in the development of anorexia and bulimia nervosa. Therefore, we assessed a variety of childhood body-focused behaviors and childhood social behaviors in eating-disordered patients as compared to non-eating-disordered subjects. METHOD: We compared 50 female inpatients with eating disorders (anorexia or bulimia nervosa), 50 female inpatients with polysubstance dependence, and 50 nonpatient

Spontaneous social behaviors discriminate behavioral dementias from psychiatric disorders and other dementias.

OBJECTIVE: Changes in social behavior are often the first symptoms of neurodegenerative disease. Patients with frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) often go undiagnosed, or are misclassified as psychiatric patients, because in the absence of cognitive deficits, nonexperts fail to recognize these social changes as dementia symptoms. The object of this study was to improve screening for behavioral dementias in primary care and mental health settings by quantifying spontaneous social behaviors specific to FTLD. METHOD: In a university hospital dementia clinic, examiners blind to subject diag

The socially enriched environment test: a new approach to evaluate social behavior in a mouse model of social anxiety disorder.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a common anxiety disorder characterized by a marked fear of social situations. Treatments for SAD, including exposure therapy and medication, are not satisfactory for all patients. This has led to the development of several paradigms to study social fear in rodents. However, there are still some social impairments observed in SAD patients that have never been examined in rodent models. Indeed, social situations avoided by SAD patients include not only social interactions but also public performances and being observed by others. Nevertheless, tests used to asse

New Developments in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Social Anxiety Disorder.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a highly prevalent and chronic disorder that causes considerable psychosocial impairment. This article reviews recent changes in the definition of SAD in DSM-5 and summarizes the current evidence for effective cognitive-behavioral treatments in adults, children, and adolescents. Current data suggests that cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is efficacious in the treatment of this condition. Among different CBT approaches, individual cognitive therapy may be associated with the largest effect sizes. In this review, interventions targeting dysfunctional cognitive

Dissociating social reward learning and behavior in alcohol use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is associated with deficits in social cognition and behavior, but why these deficits are acquired is unknown. We hypothesized that a reduced association between actions and outcomes for others, i.e., social reward learning, would explain prevalent social deficiencies in AUD. METHODS: We conducted one laboratory study (n = 234) and one confirmatory online study (n = 258), comparing young adults with AUD to age-, gender-, and education-matched healthy controls on a standardized reward learning task. In the task, participants learned to maximize reward for
