[Social class and health].

This publication deals with the German social class and their interactions with health or illness. The analysis uses the data of the German National Health Interview and Examination Survey 1998. The results are as follows: During the last decade the proportion of inhabitants of lower social class has decreased in favour of the proportions of middle and upper social classes. The formerly observed differences between the eastern part (former GDR) and the western part of Germany have diminished or have even levelled to zero. Even today men in Germany belong more often to the upper social class th

Social class and social mobility in depressed patients.

In the present study current social class, parental social class and social mobility have been compared in a series of 111 depressed patients of different diagnostic subgroups and of 97 non-psychiatric controls. Social class III was shown to be overrepresented in the unipolar, bipolar and unspecified groups. However, no differences concerning parental social class emerged. Unipolar and bipolar patients were more downwardly mobile than the neurotic depressives, the unspecified depressives and the controls.

Social class and human twinning.

In a comparative study to examine the effect of social factors on human twinning, data on sociodemographic and other factors were collected from parents of all twins born alive in Denmark in 1984 or 1985 and from a random sample of parents of singleton infants born in the same years. A postal questionnaire was used. The twins were classified as monozygotic (MZ) or dizygotic (DZ) twins by the similarity method. A trend was found in DZ-twinning, with significantly fewer DZ-twins born in the lower social classes, but not in MZ-twinning. All results were controlled for maternal age and parity.

Social class and infectious mononucleosis.

The socio-economic status of 80 patients with infectious mononucleosis was compared with the socio-economic distribution of the general population in the same area of south-west London. An excess incidence of infectious mononucleosis was observed among subjects from upper socio-economic groups. A possible relationship between this observation and the epidemiology of the Epstein-Barr virus is discussed.

Effect of parental social class, own education and social class on mortality among young men.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study is to examine the effects of parental class, own education and social class on mortality by cause of death among young men. METHODS: The study is based on 1990 census records for 186,408 Finnish men, aged 30-34 in 1990, linked with death records for 1991-95 (1530 deaths). RESULTS: Parental class was associated with all-cause (Index of Relative Dissimilarity (IRD) = 12%) and cause-specific mortality before adjustment for one's own social class and education. Adjustment reduced the IRD by 18-58%, depending on the cause of death, and caused mortality differences

Social class and cause of death.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that causes of death differ in their relationship to social class, but we lack a more comprehensive description of this variation. The present study provides a detailed and extensive list of social class differences for a large number of specific causes of death. METHODS: All deaths between 1991 and 2003 in Sweden were linked with information on household social class from 1990. Relative death risks and excess mortality in groups of causes according to the European shortlist were estimated separately for men and women in eight classes using Cox Regressi

Social Class Discrimination and Academic Success: A Person-Centered Approach Among Adolescents Disadvantaged in Social Class.

INTRODUCTION: Prior research indicates that social class is strongly associated with academic outcomes such as GPA. However, little work explores the role that social discrimination plays in this relation. This study examined the link between social class discrimination and academic outcomes among high school students. METHOD: Participants were 956 working class adolescents (ages 13-18; 55% boys, 65% Latine) in the western United States. Using latent profile analysis, we identified four patterns of discrimination from five sources (teachers, classmates, friends, other teenagers, and community

Tobacco smoking, cancer and social class.

Consumption of tobacco products, both by smoking and by other means, has long been causally connected with cancers of the lung, larynx, mouth and pharynx, oesophagus, bladder, and many other sites. Tobacco is the main specific contributor to total mortality in many developed countries and has become a major contributor in the developing countries as well. In most industrialized countries, prevalence of cigarette smoking is currently higher in low than in high social classes, although in some industrialized countries smoking was more frequent in high social classes during the first half of this

Negative emotion and perceived social class.

People use stereotypes about the benefits of wealth and success to infer that rich people look happier than poor people. For instance, perceivers categorize smiling faces as rich more often than they categorize neutral faces as rich. Moreover, richer people's neutral faces in fact display more positive affect than poorer people's neutral faces. Applying these emotion stereotypes thus enables perceivers to accurately classify targets' social class from their neutral faces. Extant research has left unexplained whether perceivers use broad differences in valence or specific emotions when judging

Social class gradients in health during adolescence.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To review existing data on social class gradients in adolescent health and to examine whether such gradients exist in new data concerning US adolescents. DESIGN: Review of relevant publications and unpublished data; regression analyses using adolescent self reported health status data to determine whether there are gradients by social class, using three classes categorised by adolescent reported parental work status and education. PARTICIPANTS: Adolescents of ages 11-17. MAIN RESULTS: Findings from the literature indicate the presence of social class gradients in some but n

Environmental exposure, social class, and cancer risk.

Exposure to a variety of environmental factors associated with cancer occurrence varies by social class. These factors include air pollutants (SO2, NO2, total suspended particulates, etc.), toxic waste hazards, and ionizing and other radiation. Heavy environmental pollution has been associated with an increased risk of some cancers and in particular lung cancer. There is limited evidence suggesting that individuals from lower social classes are exposed to higher levels of environmental pollutants than are individuals from higher social classes. This may be due to the placement of new sources o

Addressing social inequality in aging by the Danish occupational social class measurement.

OBJECTIVE: To present the Danish Occupational Social Class (DOSC) measurement as a measure of socioeconomic position (SEP) applicable in a late midlife population, and to analyze associations of this measure with three aging-related outcomes in midlife, adjusting for education. METHOD: Systematic coding procedures of the DOSC measurement were applied to 7,084 participants from the Copenhagen Aging and Midlife Biobank (CAMB) survey. We examined the association of this measure of SEP with chronic conditions, self-rated health, and mobility in logistic regression analyses, adjusting for school e

Looking for social class in all the wrong places: differences in social support emerge reliably between-but not within-class contexts.

Despite theorizing that cultural phenomena reflect collective processes, psychologists often analyze such phenomena at the individual level. This approach can skew conclusions by obscuring processes that unfold between-rather than within-group contexts. To demonstrate the importance of studying cultural effects at the group level, we examine a key tenet of sociocultural models of social class: an inverse relationship between class and social support. Across two datasets (Ntotal  = 3,347), individual-level linear and nonlinear models revealed weak and inconsistent associations between class ind

Social class variation in medicine use among adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about social determinants of adolescents' medicine use. The objective was to analyse the association between the family's social class and adolescents' use of medicine for headache, stomachache, difficulties in getting to sleep, and nervousness. METHODS: Cross-sectional study of 11-, 13- and 15-year-olds, a Danish contribution to the WHO international collaborative study Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) 1998. The study population comprised students from a national random sample of schools who answered a standardized questionnaire in the classroom, pa

Social class and cancer patient survival in Finland.

The effect of social class on survival was assessed in a cohort of cancer patients identified from the nationwide population-based Finnish Cancer Registry. The cohort consisted of all reported cases of the 12 most common types of cancer occurring in Finland between 1971 and 1985 among persons born in 1906-1945 (n = 106,661). Social class information based on occupation was obtained individually for each patient from the population census of 1970. Both observed and corrected (i.e., cause of death-specific) 5-year survival rates were used in the analyses. A statistically significant linear effec

Social class differences in mental retardation and subnormality.

Social class and regional differences in mental retardation were studied in a birth cohort of 12,000 children followed up until the age of 14. The incidence of severe mental retardation IQ less than 50 was significantly higher in farming families and in less developed areas, which is in agreement with the fact that a greater part of the population in these areas belong to social class IV and farmers. The obvious explanation for the higher incidence of severe mental retardation among farmers is an excess of older mothers in this group. In the group of severe mental retardation, paternal unemplo

Social class rank, threat vigilance, and hostile reactivity.

Lower-class individuals, because of their lower rank in society, are theorized to be more vigilant to social threats relative to their high-ranking upper-class counterparts. This class-related vigilance to threat, the authors predicted, would shape the emotional content of social interactions in systematic ways. In Study 1, participants engaged in a teasing interaction with a close friend. Lower-class participants--measured in terms of social class rank in society and within the friendship--more accurately tracked the hostile emotions of their friend. As a result, lower-class individuals exper

Social class and psychiatric disorder. The examination of an extreme.

Relationships between social status and various aspects of mental disorder have been of long-standing interest to both clinicians and researchers, and a large body of literature exists attesting to the importance of social status in understanding psychiatric illness and disability. Reports examining social status and schizophrenia suggest that relationships between socioeconomic status and psychiatric illness may rest heavily upon differences between the lowest socioeconomic stratum and the remainder of society. To investigate the extent to which relationships between socioeconomic status and

The who and why of pain: analysis by social class.

Physicians with an interest in pain have long suggested that the poor complain more and have a higher prevalence of neuroticism than do higher social groups. This assumption was tested by analysing the pain patterns in 500 consecutive patients attending a pain relief clinic. Results implied that scores for presenting pain, anxiety, and depression were similar to all social groups. After treatment scores for residual pain were significantly lower in all social classes, with greatest reduction in classes III, IV, and V. Almost identical results were obtained in a subgroup of patients with cancer
