Evaluation of the Scales for Social Comparison of Appearance and Social Comparison of Well-Being.

People constantly compare their appearance and well-being to that of other individuals. However, a measure of social comparison of well-being is lacking and existing appearance-related social comparison assessment is limited to comparison tendency using predefined social situations. This limits our understanding of the role of social comparison in appearance and well-being. Therefore, we developed the Scale for Social Comparison of Appearance (SSC-A) and the Scale for Social Comparison of Well-Being (SSC-W) to assess upward and downward social comparisons with regard to (a) frequency, (b) perc

An experimental manipulation of social comparison in social anxiety.

Negative self-appraisal is thought to maintain social anxiety particularly when comparing oneself to others. Work on social comparison suggests that gender may moderate the effects of social comparison in social anxiety. Self-appraisals of the desirability of one's personality may be more important to women, whereas self-appraisal of signs of anxiety may be more important to men. Within each gender, those with high social anxiety are expected to report more negative self-appraisal when comparing themselves to someone else described as high achieving. This study is the first we are aware of tha

A motivational framework of social comparison.

Whether people's current motivation levels increase or decline also hinge on their social environment. The current research tightly integrates motivational principles from self-regulation research with social comparison processes. In a preregistered experience sampling study including more than 5,400 social comparison situations from people's everyday life, we investigated how discrepancy assessments between the self and a comparison standard influence people's motivation and affect. Results revealed a nonlinear relationship between negative discrepancies (upward comparisons) and effort invest

Mapping the social contours of social comparison orientation: Online social identification might make us more susceptible to ability comparisons.

Social comparisons, especially ability comparisons, are one of the primary mechanisms through which social media use may harm its users. Yet little is known about what motivates this activity, and how social comparison tendencies are encouraged by the social environment. Furthermore, it is not clear what individuals might try to attain by making social comparisons beyond self-evaluation. We investigated how ability-comparison orientation, the motivation to compare one's own abilities and attributes to other people, is associated with social identification with online groups and networks. Using

Emotional Dynamics of Social Comparisons: Nonlinear Relationships Between Comparison Extremity and Social Emotions, and Their Motivational Functioning.

In an experience-sampling study, we examined how emotions stemming from social comparisons influence daily motivation. Analyzing 2,976 daily real-world social comparisons, we examined the interplay of comparison direction (upward vs. downward) and extremity (from moderate to extreme), two pleasant emotions (schadenfreude and happy-for-ness), two unpleasant emotions (benign envy, malicious envy), three motivational tendencies (pushing, coasting, and disengagement), and effort intentions. The relationships between comparison extremity and emotions were characterized by nonlinearity: Benign envy

Social comparison activity in coping with HIV.

Taylor and Lobel's (1989) model of social comparison processes under threat predicts that upward affiliation (a social activity) may be useful to improve the skills and to find inspiration in coping with HIV, whereas downward evaluation (a cognitive activity) may assist someone to feel better by comparing oneself to a less fortunate person. Participants with HIV were randomly assigned, using a 3 x 3 factorial design, to read one of nine vignettes about someone whose HIV medical prognosis and psychological adjustment were described as good, poor or unspecified. Participants desired upward affil

The role of social comparison in social judgments of dental appearance: An experimental study.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to examine the influence of social comparison on social judgments of dental malalignment in a sample of females. METHOD: In a Repeated measures design, N=218 female participants of which N=128 were orthodontic patients (mean age 31.4) and N=90 controls (mean age 26.1) rated their satisfaction with their facial appearance after viewing stereotypically beautiful images of faces (experimental condition) or houses (neutral condition). After 4-6 weeks participants returned to view an image of a female with severe crowding and were asked to make judgments

Social comparisons and social anxiety in daily life: An experience-sampling approach.

Judgments about the self compared to internalized standards are central to theoretical frameworks of social anxiety. Yet, empirical research on social comparisons-how people view themselves relative to others-and social anxiety is sparse. This research program examines the nature of everyday social comparisons in the context of social anxiety across 2 experience-sampling studies containing 8,396 unique entries from 273 adults. Hypotheses and analyses were preregistered with the Open Science Foundation (OSF) prior to data analysis. Study 1 was a 3-week daily diary study with undergraduates, and

Neural mechanisms of social comparison in subthreshold depression.

Social comparison is a common phenomenon in our daily life, through which people get to know themselves, and plays an important role in depression. In this study, event-related potential (ERP) was used to explore the temporal course of social comparison processing in the subthreshold depression group. Electrophysiological recordings were acquired from 30 subthreshold depressed individuals and 31 healthy individuals while they conducted the adapted dot estimation task. The ERP results revealed that there was a significant difference of feedback-related negativity (FRN) in the process of social

Myopic social prediction and the solo comparison effect.

Four experiments explored the psychological processes by which people make comparative social judgments. Each participant chose how much money to wager on beating an opponent on either a difficult or a simple trivia quiz. Quiz difficulty did not influence the average person's probability of winning, yet participants bet more on a simple quiz than on a difficult quiz in the first 3 experiments. The results suggest that this effect results from a tendency to attend more closely to a focal actor than to others. Experiment 4 directly manipulated focusing; when participants were led to focus on the

Increased default mode network activation in depression and social anxiety during upward social comparison.

Social comparisons are a core feature of human life. Theories posit that social comparisons play a critical role in depression and social anxiety triggering negative evaluations about the self, as well as negative emotions. We investigated the neural basis of social comparisons in participants with major depression and/or social anxiety (MD-SA, n = 56) and healthy controls (n = 47) using functional magnetic resonance imaging. While being scanned participants performed a social comparison task, during which they received feedback about their performance and the performance of a coplayer. Upward

Anxiety sensitivity in social phobia: comparison between social phobics with and without panic attacks.

The current study examines levels of anxiety sensitivity among social phobic patients with and without panic attacks. Two-hundred fourteen individuals with a primary diagnosis of social phobia completed the Anxiety Sensitivity Index (ASI) prior to treatment. Social phobics who experienced panic attacks reported higher levels of anxiety sensitivity than those without panic attacks. Patterning of response to ASI items differed between panicking and non-panicking patients, with the panicking patients reporting greater fear of catastrophic consequences of bodily sensations. Individuals with an add

Social comparison orientation and social media fatigue among university students: a cross-sectional study.

Social media platforms frequently expose users to comparison-relevant content, increasing opportunities for continuous self-other evaluation. While social media fatigue has received growing scholarly attention, limited research has examined the direct role of social comparison orientation as an independent factor associated with fatigue. Guided by Social Comparison Theory and a cognitive-affective processing perspective, the present study investigated the association between social comparison orientation and social media fatigue among university students. Using a cross-sectional survey design,

Profiles of Women With Fibromyalgia and Social Comparison Processes.

BACKGROUND: Due to uncertainty regarding chronic pain in Fibromyalgia (FM) patients, there has been a growing interest in social comparison and its influence on emotional responses. AIMS: to analyze profiles in FM patients according to pain perception, social comparison strategies and anxiety and depression. METHODS: The sample consisted of 131 FM outpatients (Mean age: 50.15, SD = 11.1). Two scales were used: the Social Comparison Illness Scale and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. RESULTS: Two profiles were found by cluster analysis (K-means method): one (66%) with a higher level

Volumetric Comparison of Overall Brain and Neuropil Size Between Social and Non-social Spiders: Exploring the Social Brain Hypothesis.

The social brain hypothesis predicts that the relative size of specific brain regions is driven by the cognitive capacity required to manage complex (social) situations. Spiders are intriguing models to test this hypothesis, as sociality is rare in this usually solitary and aggressive group. Here, we used microCT to compare the central nervous system and brain volumes between social and solitary females of the species in two taxonomic groups, huntsman and crab spiders. Overall, we found no difference in relative CNS and brain volume between social and solitary species. However, social huntsman

Social media social comparison and identity distress at the college transition: A dual-path model.

INTRODUCTION: Social media provide a convenient platform for social comparison, an activity that should play an important role in youth's identity development at the transition to college. Yet, the identity implications of online social comparison have not been thoroughly explored. Drawing on the theories of social comparison, introspective processes, and identity distress, we examined a dual-path model. The paths from two types of social media social comparison (i.e., comparison of ability and comparison of opinion) to two introspective processes (i.e., rumination and reflection) and finally

The neural architecture of social threat: A meta-analytic comparison of indirect and direct social threat.

Indirect and Direct Social Threat (IST and DST) are related but partially distinct forms of interpersonal adversity defined along two dimensions: threat perception, the explicitness and salience of harm, and behavioural reciprocity, the extent of bidirectional contingency and response opportunity. IST involves ambiguous or socially devaluing contexts with limited reciprocity, whereas DST entails overt hostility, clear antagonism, and reciprocal engagement. This distinction shows conceptual parallels with findings from rodent models of social interaction. We tested this framework using a coordi

The effect of trait mindfulness on social media rumination: Upward social comparison as a moderated mediator.

Social media rumination means that social media users are inclined to worry about their posts, relevant situational elements, and ramifications of the posts on a regular basis, and it is one of the main reasons why people's use of social media is linked to unfavorable mental health and interpersonal results. Rumination is antagonistic to mindfulness, which entails paying attention on purpose and without judgment, and mindfulness appears to be useful in reducing rumination. However, in the context of social media, the nature of the relationship between rumination and mindfulness has gained less

Social phobia and sexual problems: A comparison of social phobic, sexually dysfunctional and normal individuals.

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to test the putative link between social phobia and sexual functioning. METHODS: Three groups consisting of 106 social phobic, 164 sexually dysfunctional and 111 normal participants were assessed in terms of sexual functioning, social anxiety, social functioning and general psychopathology. RESULTS: Although social phobic men were less sexually active than normal men, they were as sexually satisfied. Social phobic women were alike their normal counterparts in all respects. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, social phobic individuals were not more prone to report sexual prob

Altered Putamen Activation for Social Comparison-Related Feedback in Social Anxiety Disorder: A Pilot Study.

INTRODUCTION: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is characterized by abnormal processing of performance-related social stimuli. Previous studies have shown altered emotional experiences and activations of different sub-regions of the striatum during processing of social stimuli in patients with SAD. However, whether and to what extent social comparisons affect behavioural and neural responses to feedback stimuli in patients with SAD is unknown. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To address this issue, emotional ratings and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) responses were assessed while patients suf
