Reward and Imitation in Social Conformity.

PURPOSE: Normative social conformity has been proposed to elicit a hedonic reward signal that is dissociable from informational inferences about decision outcomes. If present, such a signal should reinforce not just the decision that preceded it but also incidental, contextual, and stimulus features. Here, we pit this account against a non-hedonic imitation algorithm. METHOD: Across two studies (n = 359), we used a nondeceptive three-participant gambling task in which trial-by-trial information was provided about the selections and monetary payoffs of two other participants facing the same, r

The pursuit of social acceptance: aberrant conformity in social anxiety disorder.

The defining pathological features of social anxiety disorder primarily concern the social landscape, yet few empirical studies have examined the potentially aberrant behavioral and neural patterns in this population using socially interactive paradigms. We addressed this issue by investigating the behavioral and neural patterns associated with social conformity in patients with social anxiety disorder. We recorded event-related potentials when healthy subjects (n = 19), and patients with social anxiety disorder (n = 20) made attractiveness judgements of unfamiliar others, while at the same ti

Aberrant emotional conformity among individuals with social anxiety.

Social anxiety (SA) is characterized by heightened fear of negative evaluation and excessive motivation for social belonging, yet the neurocognitive mechanisms underlying aberrant emotional conformity-defined as adjusting one's emotional responses to align with others-remain unclear. This study combined behavioral tasks and event-related potentials (ERPs) to investigate how social anxiety modulates emotional conformity during social scene evaluations. Forty-four participants (22 high SA, 22 low SA) provided subjective affective ratings of neutral and negative social scenes based on imagining t

Testing the reinforcement learning hypothesis of social conformity.

Our preferences are influenced by the opinions of others. The past human neuroimaging studies on social conformity have identified a network of brain regions related to social conformity that includes the posterior medial frontal cortex (pMFC), anterior insula, and striatum. Since these brain regions are also known to play important roles in reinforcement learning (i.e., processing prediction error), it was previously hypothesized that social conformity and reinforcement learning have a common neural mechanism. However, although this view is currently widely accepted, these two processes have

The illusion of conformity: when independent learning mimics social influence.

Although individuals tested in isolation often show substantial behavioral variation, they tend to behave more uniformly in groups, a pattern commonly attributed to social conformity (ie, a form of social learning in which individuals preferentially adopt the most common trait). However, evidence for social conformity in nonhuman animals remains debated, as group-level convergence can also arise from independent learning, where individuals adopt the trait maximizing their fitness. Such learning can generate either adaptive phenotypic convergence or pseudo-conformity when aligning with the grou

The Expression and Transfer of Valence Associated with Social Conformity.

Consensus seeking - abandoning one's own judgment to align with a group majority - is a fundamental feature of human social interaction. Notably, such striving for majority affiliation often occurs in the absence of any apparent economic or social gain, suggesting that achieving consensus might have intrinsic value. Here, using a simple gambling task, in which the decisions of ostensible previous gamblers were indicated below available options on each trial, we examined the affective properties of agreeing with a group majority by assessing the trade-off between social and non-social currencie

Conformity to social norm interventions is not amplified in tighter nations.

Social norms have a reliable and oftentimes strong influence on individual attitudes and behaviors across environmental and other domains. This influence has been theorized to differ by cultural tightness-the extent to which people adhere to shared cultural norms. Understanding whether and how cultural context moderates the influence of behavioral interventions is essential for the design of culturally-attuned and adaptable interventions to address collective action problems like climate change. Yet, past research has primarily relied on correlational approaches to demonstrate cross-cultural d

Social conformity is a heuristic when individual risky decision-making is disrupted.

When making risky choices in social contexts, humans typically combine social information with individual preferences about the options at stake. It remains unknown how such decisions are made when these preferences are inaccessible or disrupted, as might be the case for individuals confronting novel options or experiencing cognitive impairment. Thus, we examined participants with lesions in insular or dorsal anterior cingulate cortex, key regions implicated in risky decision-making, as they played a gambling task where choices were made both alone and after observing others' choices. The role of loss aversion in social conformity: psychological and neural representations.

The impact of others' choices on decision-making is influenced by individual preferences. However, the specific roles of individual preferences in social decision-making remain unclear. In this study, we examine the contributions of risk and loss preferences as well as social influence in decision-making under uncertainty using a gambling task. Our findings indicate that while both individual preferences and social influence affect decision-making in social contexts, loss aversion plays a dominant role, especially in individuals with high loss aversion. This phenomenon is accompanied by increa

Who spares the rod? Religious orientation, social conformity, and child abuse potential.

OBJECTIVE: Relatively little research has investigated the connection between religiosity and physical child abuse risk. Certain aspects, such as specific religious orientation or beliefs, and cognitive schema, such as socially conformist beliefs, may account for the connection that some have claimed increase religious parents' abuse potential. The current study examined whether greater Extrinsic religiosity, but not Intrinsic religiosity, was associated with elevated physical abuse potential. Those who hold a literal interpretation of the Bible and attend church more frequently were also expe

Social anxiety and heavy situational drinking: coping and conformity motives as multiple mediators.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with clinically elevated social anxiety are at greater risk for alcohol use disorder, and the relation between social anxiety and drinking problems is at least partially accounted for by drinking more in negative emotional (e.g., feeling sad or angry) and personal/intimate (e.g., before sexual intercourse) situations. Identification of cognitive/motivational factors related to drinking in these high-risk situations could inform the development of treatment and prevention interventions for these high-risk drinkers. METHOD: The current cross-sectional study examined th

Cluster analysis of conformity and social desirability: Association with use and problematic use of licit substances.

BACKGROUND: Problematic Use of Licit Substances is an increasing public health concern in Lebanon, where political and economic instability, alongside cultural and religious diversity, may intensify risk behaviors, while social desirability and conformity can influence their reporting. This study aims to assess the profiles of participants related to social desirability and conformity pressures and their association with licit substance use and problematic use. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among 460 adults in Lebanon (February-March 2025). Data on cigarette, waterpip

Social Media is Shifting the Values in Our Societies: An Increase in People's Achievement and Conformity Orientation.

Past research explored the beneficial and harmful effects of social media (SM), but no study has investigated how SM might change people's identities. Authors suggest that SM is a catalyst for a shift in two individual values, achievement and conformity, transforming the fabric of our societies. A difference-in-differences analysis found that countries with higher SM adoption compared to their culturally similar country show an increase in achievement and conformity orientation. Next, authors manipulated SM use and established a causal link between SM use and the activation of achievement and

People conform to social norms when gambling with lives or money.

Many consider moral decisions to follow an internal "moral compass", resistant to social pressures. Here we examine how social influence shapes moral decisions under risk, and how it operates in different decision contexts. We employed an adapted Asian Disease Paradigm where participants chose between certain losses/gains and probabilistic losses/gains in a series of moral (lives) or financial (money) decisions. We assessed participants' own risk preferences before and after exposing them to social norms that are generally risk-averse or risk-seeking. Our results showed that participants robus

Distinct neurocomputational mechanisms support informational and socially normative conformity.

A change of mind in response to social influence could be driven by informational conformity to increase accuracy, or by normative conformity to comply with social norms such as reciprocity. Disentangling the behavioural, cognitive, and neurobiological underpinnings of informational and normative conformity have proven elusive. Here, participants underwent fMRI while performing a perceptual task that involved both advice-taking and advice-giving to human and computer partners. The concurrent inclusion of 2 different social roles and 2 different social partners revealed distinct behavioural and

Fitting in and feeling fine: conformity and coping motives as mediators of the relationship between social anxiety and problematic drinking.

The present research was conducted to clarify the relationships among social anxiety, alcohol consumption, alcohol-related problems, and negative-reinforcement drinking motives among college students. Heavy drinking students (N = 316, 53.80% female) completed self-report measures of social anxiety, alcohol consumption, alcohol-related problems, and drinking motives. Findings indicated that students higher in social anxiety consumed less alcohol but experienced more negative consequences. Moreover, the relationship between social anxiety and negative consequences was mediated by coping and conf

Conforming to AI vs. humans: The moderating effects of social exclusion and task type.

Conformity is often understood as a socially motivated process; however, individuals increasingly conform not only to humans but also to artificial intelligence (AI). It remains unclear whether the same motivational and task-related mechanisms underlie conformity across these sources. To examine whether conformity to AI reflects task- and motivation- dependent processes similar to those underlying conformity to humans, we conducted an online conformity experiment in which we manipulated opinion source (AI vs. human) and task type (objective vs. subjective), while measuring participants' self-r

Transcriptomic changes in the posterior pallium of male zebra finches associated with social niche conformance.

Animals plastically adjust their physiological and behavioural phenotypes to conform to their social environment-social niche conformance. The degree of sexual competition is a critical part of the social environment to which animals adjust their phenotypes, but the underlying genetic mechanisms are poorly understood. We conducted a study to investigate how differences in sperm competition risk affect the gene expression profiles of the testes and two brain areas (posterior pallium and optic tectum) in breeding male zebra finches (Taeniopygia castanotis). In this pre-registered study, we inves

Social determinants of cognitive outcomes in survivors of pediatric brain tumors treated with conformal radiation therapy.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health including parental occupation, household income, and neighborhood environment are predictors of cognitive outcomes among healthy and ill children; however, few pediatric oncology studies have investigated this relationship. This study utilized the Economic Hardship Index (EHI) to measure neighborhood-level social and economic conditions to predict cognitive outcomes among children treated for brain tumors (BT) with conformal radiation therapy (RT).
